This is a school parking lot at about 1pm, normally, this would be towards the end of the school day and there might be students walking between buildings. Now, it is empty as students have to complete work from home and cannot be at the school. *5/7/2020; Covid-19 -

Empty Streets
Today is April 23rd 2020 My name is Dylan and I live in the small New England town of Marblehead, just 15 miles north of Boston. Marblehead is one of those small boutique towns that pride themselves on its rich history and position right on the ocean. However, due to COVID-19, Marblehead has effectively become barren and small businesses along our main road are closed until the foreseeable future. This road is usually busy and crowded with traffic, runners, dog walkers, street side parkers, and tourists. This has been the state of the town for weeks now and has been the cause of some small-town discussions online. The closing of businesses in town will be hard felt compared to many other towns and cities because Marblehead is against the establishment of chain stores (besides Dunks and Starbucks of course) and relies heavily on local businesses created by local Marbleheaders. This pandemic will be the cause of many financial issues in our town and as the U.S. remains closed, our town’s income from lobstering and tourism will likely be very limited. The town has also passed rules for those willing to shop, that we must wear face coverings to get our shopping done. And for walkers, walking around town has also been hampered by the closing of certain public locations, parks, and access to walkways connecting different parts of town. As for myself, I prefer to stay indoors for the time being due to our rather poor weather lately. -

Daily Walk #2
Walking by the Gowanus canal I came upon these empty soy and fish sauce bottles. It was as if people had been drinking them during their lunch hour. Or emptying bottles before fleeing the city. And who would drink soy sauce anyway? 512 people died in NY State that day. -

Window Series #4
In mid-march my school transitioned to virtual classes and sent everyone home for the semester. I've mostly been at home in Manhattan since then; the last time I rode the subway, previously a daily occurrence, was over six weeks ago now. At home and in the neighborhood nearby since then, I feel as though I can look out the window onto a previous version of myself that could not have anticipated any of this. I also feel as though I look at myself now through a window, because after over a month, this all still feels fake in a way. It’s as though time has been suspended and I’m watching myself filling that time that “doesn’t count.” There is a numbness that comes with not being able to do any of what we’re used to and not being able to see people who we thought nothing of seeing every day in the past. The window analogy is both a way of conceptualizing but also deliberately engaging in that numbness and removing oneself from the reality of the situation, perhaps on both a personal and global level. It’s also a way of rebuilding the wall that has been breached by collision of home with the spaces that are normally outside of it, like work and school, and are now part of the same physical setting, albeit digitally. This has made me think a lot about windows, which are everywhere in New York, and so I started to take pictures of windows in buildings I passed while going for walks. The windows themselves all look similar; despite differences in architectural style, they are all in essence the same glass barrier between inside and outside and public and private. It’s not something specific to life in a pandemic, but during this time it is especially relevant because for people staying mostly at home, our windows are potentially the only glimpse of the outside that we’ll see in a day. They divide our former lives and everything that we’d normally be doing outside of home from our current lives that have suspended many of those activities and digitized others. It’s easier to think about these private separate lives going on behind the windows I pass when there are fewer people out on the street. Normally the act of passing people as I walk is more engaging than what I can’t see in the closed-off apartment buildings, but now there is not a lot going on in the streets. It’s interesting to think I’m probably closer in distance to people behind the walls of the ground floors of buildings than the people I can see on the street, especially on the less busy streets that are particularly empty these days. -

The Great Grocery Store Run
Throughout my whole life I have never seen people so scared and/or lost like I did during this pandemic. Hearing on the news that the COVID-19 pandemic was sweeping across the country and that we were encouraged to stock up on essential supplies I decided to head to the nearest Walmart and get the things I would need for daily life to continue. As I walk into the grocery store, I could immediately feel the panic that was upon every individual that was in the building. Shopping carts full to the max as well as almost everybody having on mask and/or gloves. Shelves were almost completely empty with nothing really left for the workers to stock them back up with. People fighting over items that we considered very small and unimportant just a few days ago. I was completely shocked at just how real this invisible virus had become to everybody, and what people were willing to do to make sure that they were able to survive. A day I will always remember as the Great Grocery Store Run. #REL101 -

The Reality of a Pandemic
Walmart, which is usually known for having large quantities of any and all goods you could ever need, is shown being completely out of toilet paper. It shows the reality of this pandemic, and the obsession to "horde" what is seen as neccesities. Not pictured is the meat section completely empty, as well as all the bicycles being sold out, both of which were the case on different occasions. #REL101 -

Waiting to Return 2
When the school closed, it was unlike any other closing. Teachers left up the bulletin boards and projects were still hanging from the ceilings. Do we take down the maps and put away our figurines on our desk to keep from dust? When will we return? It's only March. The school year isn't over yet. A month later, the classrooms are still wondering. The teachers are still hoping. The students are still asking. The wishers are still wishing. The prayers are still praying. -

REL Arizona State University Ghost Town
I work at the Sun Devil Card Office a the Memorial Union on the ASU campus. These are the signs that are on every door of the MU that has been closed. Usually, the Memorial Union is filled with people at the food court, dining hall, or just studying, but now there is nobody but the 10 employees that still clean/ roam the building. The virus has made this lively campus a ghost town. Students and faculty haven't been on the campus since spring break. This shows you just how serious this pandemic is. Usually, around this time, students would be studying for finals in the MU or the library, but now there is no one studying here. -

Las Vegas, known as the "City that never sleeps", which is the home to many famous performers/acts, hotels, restaurants, night life and more is seen to be completely empty due to many of the attractions being closed because of COVID-19. Sick woman in Church
A woman who is either sick or preventing by wearing a mask in sitting in church. We are made to need hope or look to a higher power/ God during times of hardship. Religion and hope in God has brought me a lot of peace during this time. -

sick in church
Photo of a woman in a church with a mask on her face. This signifies the need of a higher power during these times of hardship. We are humans who are in need of someone/ something to give us hope. This picture clearly shows that this woman is sick or trying to prevent sickness and looking for hope in a God. Photo time is unidentified. This photo signifies our absolute need for a higher power, God, in a time like we are going through with Covid-19. #REL101 -
