Asian American Experiences With Hate
There were 3,795 firsthand complaints of racism and discrimination against Asian Americans from March 19, 2020, through the end of February 2021, according to the coalition Stop AAPI Hate. Last week, eight people -- six of whom were Asian women -- were killed in the Atlanta shootings at three spas. The incident shook up many in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. While the past year has magnified the hate, it's also inspiring some Asian Americans to stop being silent and speak out about their experiences. CNN asked Asian Americans to share their stories. CNN received more than 300 responses, and this article shares some of these stories. They recount fear, violent attacks, racial slurs, losing businesses, being told to "go back to your country," and the scapegoating that has happened to the AAPI community. There is also a desire with the AAPI to speak out and encourage others to, too. -

Teachers Do It All
Tired of hearing media highlighting g what teachers aren’t doing. Need more shout outs of what they ARE doing. This is just part of the drive up supply pick up package from first grader’s teacher. The 5th of the year! In addition to ALL the academic supplies needed, there are fun surprises. Always paid out of pocket and always packed with cars and personalised. GGUSD teachers go above and beyond as do many teachers across the globe. -

Coronaland
With Carnival parades cancelled, somebody had the bright idea to start the Krewe of House Floats to (a) make up for it and (b) to offer work to unemployed float artisans. The results have gone beyond everyone's wildest imagination with 5,000+ people signing up in New Orleans, surrounding parishes, and around the world. This installation shows “Don't Panic -- Chewy's Guide to da COVID Galaxy” on Camp Street. -

“Well I feel like its strengthened my faith and my beliefs..."
“Well I feel like its strengthened my faith and my beliefs because we've learned through our readings of the Bible and our studying that the Bible speaks about the end times being similar to what we're facing now and also through this we’ve seen our local assembly... people draw closer to God through this. We've seen people get the Holy Ghost over the phone through this pandemic. We’ve seen a lot of people just really get closer to God during this so I feel like personally for me it's strengthened my faith and my belief in God and it's just shown me that when the Bible speaks of end times it's exactly what we're dealing with going on now.” -

A Walk through Covid-19 Brooklyn: We're all in this Together
As college seniors approaching our last few months, we have all been talking about how we wanted to spend our final days together. We were aware of the reality of having more responsibility after graduation. And just like that - the time we had left vanished. It isn’t fair that our college experience didn’t have the closure it deserved. It wasn’t supposed to end like this. But among the things that seem unfair right now, who am I to complain about something so selfish and short sighted? My college is in the Bronx, and while most people returned home to their families for quarantine, I simply switched boroughs. New York City is a warzone, over 200 people are dying everyday. One day, the death toll exceeded 800. And while I have never seen my city mourn like this, I have never seen it come together like this either. Every night at 7 pm, Maryann, two houses down from mine, stands in her driveway and plays “God Bless America” on a speaker for all the neighbors to hear. Amanda that lives down the block became a licensed nurse a few months ago. Her mother, Fran, has made a hobby of making masks out of old fabric. My sister spends hours on the phone talking to her special education students and their families about the adjustments being made. As a result of this pandemic, Dalia across the street has had an increase in patients wanting appointments because of the increase in mental health problems. When I go for my daily walk, everyday I see a new sign thanking healthcare and essential workers, signs saying things like, “Brooklyn Strong!” Nothing brings people together like tragedy. There are differences among all these people I have mentioned and they are all being affected in different ways. However, at the end of the day, any one of us can get sick. We are all human. We have different ethnic origins, identify as different genders, practice different religions, have different mental and physical disabilities, but viruses don’t care about that. Although certain health or economic factors may make specific groups more at risk for serious illness from the virus, a virus is non-discriminatory when it comes to the presence of cognitive or physical disabilities. It will survive and debilitate any human body. We all share a common enemy. During this pandemic, so many different kinds of people are fighting for something bigger. This fight against a force imperceptible to the human eye has in fact diminished differences, brought people together to fight for change in new and influential ways, and shown the strength of the fabric of our society. -

Smiles and Sidewalk Chalk
I saw that MMR was having a sidewalk contest and I wanted to enter something cool, so I started this project on April 15, 2020. My neighbors helped me a bit and when my project was about done, we were washing our hands out side and the water spilled all over my art and ruined it. The next day, I redid the entire project! And that day and it was just starting to get hot outside at the time, but all the work was worth it! I also wanted to make people walking by, smile and bring a little color into this quarentine! My Family and I also put bible verses around our sidewalk to give encouragement to everyone! What gave me the inspiration to do this chalk art? Well, I saw so many other people and kids posting and doing chalk art around their neighborhoods, and it made me want to be more creative! #chalkart #mmr -

Top10 Running Club
Who among us would be directly touched by the virus? We had met regularly to support each other on our fitness journeys prior to the outbreak, providing encouragement and congratulations on minor achievements such as a 5K or 10K race, sprint training, a session of hills. Every member of the Top 10 Running Club is is over 40 and the oldest member is 56. Most are nursing physical injuries. Naturally, virus fatigue also took a toll on members' emotions. Now, separately but together through a group chat, we send the same encouraging messages, but the encouragement has a tint of urgency, more warnings to take care, and I imagine that behind the congratulatory notes for miles accomplished is an other-worldly voice whispering "It could be your last training session." The voice worms into my mind, between my running play list songs, saying "stay away from the walkers, bikers, other runners, steer clear! Pull on your mask! Warning! A child on a bike! Run ..." Where once I ran, I now feel the urge to run away. The group continues to provide encouragement, nonetheless. I am fighting the fear, so I suggested a 100 mile group run for the month of May. May is the month that signals the start of warmer weather in Northern Indiana and solidarity for ordinary working people in some countries around the world. Safety in numbers, even when apart, feels better, I reasoned. I got a great response from the group working on their goals, and almost every one of the 10 or so members participated. We accomplished the goal by May 11 despite record cold temperatures. I plan to extend the challenge and add others to give us all the will to run past this challenge in our lives. -

Connecting through Chalk
Chalk messages on a green way path. For miles this greenway path to park and nature area had sporadic messages through out with motivational and comforting sayings. I had noticed children going out to the path and leaving these messages for all to see. It was nice to read these things and know that while practicing safe social distancing not engaging in close conversation with other while on walks that others can communicate their feelings and connecting with others using only a few words. -
