'Severe inhumanity': California prisons overwhelmed by Covid outbreaks and approaching fires
This Tweet and article concern the conditions inmates in California's prisons are experiencing. First they had to deal with Covid-19 and figure out how to slow the spread of the disease within overcrowded facilities where social distancing is impossible and mask wearing presents its own set of issues. Second incarcerated people are living in a near constant state of lockdown, visitation and even communication with family and friends is gone. Third they are facing the threat of wildfires within a few miles of several prisons causing the people inside the buildings to breath air filled with smoke. To add insult to injury the state of California uses prison labor to fight these same fires. This article illustrates how we as a society treat those most at risk among us. Even those in a correctional facility for the terminally ill in hospice care are not being evacuated. -

The Big Flee
Early in the morning on March 17, my roommates and I fled San Francisco. It felt extremely weird leaving my life behind, but we would return to normal soon (or so I thought). As we piled our belongings into the back of a friend's car I looked around to see nobody. Not even an early morning jogger or any sign of life for that matter. In the airport we got through security in five minutes and saw around two others our whole time there. It was as if time had stood still in the city. At the time I was extremely scared, as what evils could cause a city-wide shutdown? How dangerous was CO-19 if all colleges had moved to online learning and forced every student out of the dorms? Little was known about the effects of CO-19 in March, and as I write this on August 23, 2020 more is yet to be discovered before we can safely reopen as a country. I chose to include this photo with my story as it was taken on March 16, 2020, the night before San Francisco's mandatory shutdown. It was eerie how silent the once bustling streets of downtown were. I had never witnessed something like this in my life. -

Sanford Lake Flooded amidst COVID-19 Pandemic, 10,000 people evacuated.
I’m having a hard time putting into words what I feel. My mom lives on Sanford lake in the house that belonged to my grandparents. After excessive rain, the three dams that regulate the Tittabawassee River broke one by one. The lake level rose, and flooded homes and roads. The city of Midland also flooded. My mom, brother, and uncle evacuated. Initially, my mom went to the designated shelter- Meridian Highschool. But my brother called her and said it was a bad idea because it was upriver from her home, probably would flood too, and there’s COVID-19, so being packed in a highs school with a bunch of people isn’t the safest place to be. She ended up going to my brother’s in Midland, which was not part of the flood zone. This morning her house is completely flooded. -

evacuation | a college covid-19 story
I filmed this on my phone during my last day on my college campus in Providence, RI, (after evacuation measures had been announced) and during my 12-hour drive home to Greenville, NC.
