Caravanning Through the Eisenhower Gala
I try to attend the Eisenhower Gala every year. It is scheduled for the Saturday nearest to Dwight D. Eisenhower’s birthday. During the first year of the corona lockdown, in 2020, we got together to celebrate Ike’s birthday without the Gala. We caravanned around Abilene to different places of significance in young Dwight’s life with Mary Jean Eisenhower, Dwight D. Eisenhower’s granddaughter explaining the significant place to Ike’s life. We went to the fairgrounds where Ike announced his candidacy for President. We went to a historical building where Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower watched a parade to honor him. The building is now apartments for folks of modest means that, somehow, seems fitting. I’m confident Ike wished everyone well and to be happy. We went to the cemetery where Dwight’s father, Jacob, and mother, Ida, were buried. I was struck by how modest the graves were. I thought Eisenhower’s lived modestly like us. The tour finished at Ike’s favorite restaurant in Abilene, the Farmhouse Restaurant, where we had an excellent dinner. Though there was no Gala dinner with elegantly clad ladies and gentlemen enthusiastically lost in gregarious conversation, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting all the historical places of significance in young Ike’s life. The 2020 Eisenhower birthday celebration was once educational and engaging. -

Fall 2021: Creating Community No Longer Virtual
After attending college online and having virtual classes, many students were eager to come back to the St. Mary’s University community. However, creating a community has looked different from pre-covid semesters. Before the pandemic hit, student life and university programming council hosted many events. Residence life and resident assistants also hosted events for residents in the dorm halls. When everything was virtual resident assistants tried engaging with residents and creating community online. This consisted of watching movies, playing games, or just having a space to talk to each other. Now that residence halls are open and most classes are in-person, creating community looks a bit more like pre-covid semesters. Resident assistants are required to create engagement opportunities for their residents. There are several ways to do this like traditional planned programs, spontaneous get-togethers, bring-along events, etc. Although the programs resemble pre-covid semesters more than the last three semesters, covid is still something to beware of. When planning events, resident assistants consider how many people might attend, whether the space is indoors or outdoors, will there be food, etc. Resident assistants are also required to uphold and enforce covid policies like mask-wearing. So, while also trying to create a sense of community, residence life and student staff still try to create a safe environment. -

Every story matters – Continuing the Heritage 2021
Continuing the Heritage is a wonderful event that St. Mary’s puts on for its students and staff. It allows all members of the university to participate in a day of service, offering over 30 volunteer opportunities to join on that day. CTH not only brings the student community together but also connects the students to the city of San Antonio and its community. Even with Covid, when everything went remote, St. Mary’s still found ways to make CTH happen and found opportunities for students to volunteer remotely. This year was my second time participating in CTH and I really enjoyed it. The first time I did it was freshman year and I worked with No Graffiti SA and this year I helped in the library at Locke Hill Elementary School. Both times were very fun and rewarding as I got to not only volunteer with friends but also be able to spend some time giving back to my community even during a pandemic. -

COVID-19 Pandemic
The text story would be about my feelings toward COVID-19. It is sad that I don't remember much of what life was like before the pandemic hit. The masks, the social distancing, the looks you get when you have a runny nose. There are so many theories in regards to COVID-19 and much like anything else, everyone has their own opinion. Some revolve their lives around it, others don't care about. Personally, I'm not scared of the pandemic, I'm not vaccinated, nor do I get worried when people around me test positive for it. It is important to me because it has significantly changed our lives for the worse. We miss out on extremely important events and experiences. In my opinion, much of this should be a choice. If you want to wear a mask, wear one. If you want to social distance, do it. If you want to get vaccinated, get vaccinated. -

2020 Virtual Pride Event
The Pride events that normally are live and in-person are now going to be going virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though, this may be seen as a bad thing it is to keep all participants safe as the pandemic has been raging and the goal is to still celebrate Pride and also keep everyone safe. There is one positive that comes out of this online pride this year which is that allows people who may normally not participate in other parts of the world who could not travel to New York City or their area or country outlaws LGBTQ things can simply just have internet and log on and participate and celebrate pride. This being online may impact others in a positive manner by allowing these new people to have the courage to be advocates for LGBTQ people. -

The day it all went south
From the beginning of quarantine till now the simple, everyday things I used to do has now become a difficult. Such examples would be going to the bodega or going to my therapy appointments or even going to work. There’s now so many extra steps and protocols as if my job wasn’t already stressful enough. While I personally haven’t been affected by corona virus in terms of health, I can still say that it has turned everything upside down. I still can hang out with friends but I’ve missed so many events that I was looking forward to. Anime event to birthday event, all of those experiences missed. The biggest thing about COVID for me was that it showed me just how selfish and ignorant others are by not only people refusing to wear masks but some even denying it’s existence. -

What Prides across Utah are looking like now
The Utah Pride Festival has been moved to September of this year. However, they will be participating in a Global Pride event later in June. Different regions in Utah have made similar adjustments for their pride celebrations. I wonder if pride events rescheduled for later in the year will end up being cancelled due to a second wave of COVID-19. The uncertainty is scary, but the sense of community that is being fostered by Pride events helps alleviate some of the stress of feeling uncertain or disconnected. #ASU #HST580 -

Extraordinary Times: A COVID-19 Visual Journal
A visual diary of life with a young child during the COVID-19 pandemic and mandated social distancing in greater Boston, starting in mid-March 2020. It's updated twice a week, sometimes more if the situation demands it, or if I feel the need. It's drawn with pencil and watercolors. This visual journal is my way of recording and coping with these extraordinary times. -
