HIST30060: Food Relief Centre Queue
This is a photograph taken of a queue to enter a food relief centre in South Melbourne in August 2020. The queue was several hundred metres long. As lockdowns began to ravage Melbourne, most businesses were forced to close, resulting in many people losing their jobs. Where this food relief centre had services around 100 people at the start of 2020, this number swelled to over 2000 by the height of the pandemic. Among the most vulnerable demographics affected by the pandemic restrictions were international casual workers and students. Where citizens were eligible to apply for various emergency relief payments, such as Job Keeper or Job Seeker, migrants did not have access to these resources. This food bank only required a form of identification to register the recipients. Several pandemic related restrictions are shown in this picture. The recipients are socially distanced, standing on makeshift markings spaced 1.5 metres apart by government restriction. They wear masks; a government requirement both indoors and outdoors at the height of the pandemic in Victoria. The food bank volunteers wear neon orange high-visibility vests and hold QR codes for the recipients to register on their own devices. I have volunteered at the food relief centre since 2020, performing the same role as the volunteers in the photograph. Where mainstream historical narratives and media may focus on how the lockdowns affected citizens, it is important to remember how migrants too were affected by the pandemic and had little to know support from the Australian government. -

Community Connections: addressing food scarcity in Sacramento, California
This website is a rallying point for Community Connections 95820, a community organization that works to provide food to families in need in the South Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento, California. This organization is picking up where food banks are leaving off as many of the food banks in this neighborhood have closed due to the pandemic, and families have been lacking food for a variety of reasons. This highlights food scarcity issues during the pandemic and efforts of community members to make sure their neighbors are still able to get food. The “About Us” page says Community Connections was inspired by a project called Invisible Hands, in New York City. Community Connections highlights their commitment to safety, dignity, and anonymity for the families, sponsors, and volunteers. -

The Hungry During The Corona Pandemic
Workers from the food bank of lower Fairfield County in Connecticut took this picture This is a photo that I found on CNN of one of the shelves in a food bank. The amount of people that are relying on food banks has drastically changed since the begging of the pandemic to now. From the pandemic, Feeding America predicts that an estimated 1 in every 6 Americans may face hunger due to the conditions. This photo made me think how fortunate my family and I are and how lucky we are that we don’t have to be concerned with where our next meal is coming from. I think that this Is an important photo because it shows how many people are in need of food and are unable to support themselves. since more people are out of jobs because of not being able to come in contact with other people has affected the income of many and the amount they can spend on food. -

Mackenzie Shay Oral History, 2020/05/15
In this interview, Mackenzie Shay talks about the initial pandemic shut down and how this has impacted her as a student. She describes how Eau Claire’s small shops and businesses were being closed and how the community still tried to keep them alive by ordering online and using curbside pickup. Then Mackenzie talks about her first impressions of the virus, how she knew covid was a big deal because her mom was an English teacher in China at the time and would tell her how the students were staying at home, but she didn’t fully realize it until it came to America. Mackenzie then talks about how she is going to university to be a teacher and this is her last semester but she is unable to do the student teacher portion due to covid restrictions. Then she discusses how covid and the stay at home initiative caused all schooling to be online and that she believes this will cause students to fall behind as she thinks that many are not absorbing the material, this is based on what she sees in her tutoring sessions. She then talks about her challenges with the pandemic, one being money, as her boyfriend had been laid off with his server job and she was not coaching anymore. So to stay in budget they stay at home and don’t do much. Then she discusses how she keeps in touch with family via zoom, snapchat, and other social apps to stay up to date with family business. -

A baseball writer returns to the Rogers Centre, as a food bank volunteer. The greed in the game is nowhere to be found
A news article discussing a journalist's experience switching from reporting on sports to volunteering for Food Banks Canada. the Rogers Centre, home of the Toronto Blue Jays, left largely vacant by the shut down of professional sports, has been turned into a massive warehouse for the accumulation of goods for Canadian food banks which are seeing a shortfall in donations during the pandemic. There is also a shortfall in volunteers which is being filled by Blue Jays' staff and reporters among others. -

Central California Food Bank Mission
I volunteer with the Central California Food Bank regularly, and wanted to document exactly what that experience looks like and how it has changed because of COVID-19. I believe in times like these, it's important to give back to your community. -

“It has made it a lot harder for me to continue practicing just everything..."
“It has made it a lot harder for me to continue practicing just everything just because I'm not really in Mass right now. So, they'll offer Mass online. It's just not the same because for me I have to have the Eucharist like the body and the blood and that's just how I get to that meditation zone where it's like I'm really here and it's just like me and god talking. I can't really feel that or get close just doing it from home watching a video. So, I do feel like I haven't been doing the best that I should be doing during these times.” -

“Well, covid-19 has not really affected my beliefs too much..."
“Well, covid-19 has not really affected my beliefs too much because we have the flu and we had H1N1 and other diseases and I mean there's nothing really that has changed with my beliefs. I'm a Christian so you know I believe that some things happen and God will allow some things to happen and that doesn't mean that he doesn't love us.” -

“So, I feel that as a Christian myself and the community..."
“So, I feel that as a Christian myself and the community just all together have really just leaned more towards the Lord and our faith during these uncertain times because we know that there is a greater purpose and there's just no plan greater than his and it honestly just makes me thankful to have this relationship with Christ because it brings my family and myself more comfort.” -

“It really hasn't. I believe in God. I'm a Roman Catholic."
“It really hasn't. I believe in God. I'm a Roman Catholic. A lot of people are likening covid-19 to the book of Revelations which really it doesn't apply. What this has taught me as a person... I still believe in God as a result of this. My belief is even stronger. I don't think this is something that God has sent his wrath to kill the majority of people in the United States or that it's causing… It’s causing people a lot of anguish. I will say that because people have… as a society we have become so reliant on freedom. It really kind of has taken us a step back and if you want to look introspectively at yourself in your beliefs this is teaching everyone or it should be teaching everyone what’s important in your life.” -

"Um... I wouldn't say my beliefs or faith have been changed in any way."
"Um... I wouldn't say my beliefs or faith have been changed in any way. Um... the way that I practice my faith has been changed. So, instead of going to church every Sunday, we kinda watch online um but other than that I would say it's just as strong as before." -

When crisis arise, the community comes together.
Shortly after COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, the United State's National Guard made an announcement for volunteers to come forward and help at the emergency food banks who were in need of serving a higher number of people due to the crisis. This picture was taken at St. Mary's Food Bank.
