Fair food drive-thru
My local fairgrounds in La Porte, IN organized a drive-thru of fair food for people to grab and eat. The fair wasn't officially canceled when this was announced but it is now, so this is beneficial to those who would have sold food at the fair for money this summer while also providing a way for the community to come together. #NortheasternJOTPY *Original text in "Contributor:" Anjelica Oswald, Northeastern University -

Steak, Discounts, and Toilet Paper
This particular restaurant on Maize Road in Wichita, Kansas, demonstrates the various strategies businesses employed to remain viable as COVID-19's easy transmission forced many restaurants to close their dine-in rooms and switch to online, carry-out, and delivery services. Along with the 15% discount for online ordering, this restaurant added the rather interesting incentive of a free roll of toilet paper for each order, thereby highlighting the acute hygiene product shortage that emptied store shelves across the United States in the wake of the virus-inspired "panic buying" that gripped the country. Carona Farms, Louisiana's Ripest Strawberries, Independence, LA
A local produce box I purchased to avoid going to the grocery store during the stay-at-home order included this box of strawberries. The strawberry farm's name "Carona Farms" caught my eye as it closely resembles the name of the virus. -

“Well, covid-19 hasn't really affected my faith at all."
“Well, covid-19 hasn't really affected my faith at all. I feel like its affected the social aspect of it but I've been able to adapt with everything that's going on.” “No. So, the church that my family goes to they’re having live streams on Sundays. So, they have like two different live streams one in English and one in Spanish and it hasn't really affected my participation since it's like really easy to get to like it's available on YouTube and they have like a live chat feature that not that many people use because I mean you're not really supposed to be talking while the service is going on.” -

“Being a Muslim, I believe faith is an important part of my life. It gives me a lot of comfort and relief. I think it is important to have faith and that this pandemic will be resolved as soon as possible.” “No, all of the mosques and religious centers are closed at the moment. Basically, I have been praying at home instead and I have not been able to attend my local mosque in weeks.” “Yes, they are. My local mosque has been asking for donations to help the homeless and poor. These people that are given food and supplies so it is necessary to get them some sort of assistance especially during these hard times.” -

“I don't think it's really affected it much.” “Our religious community isn't gathering. They stopped it immediately and I think they're trying to reach out to people through online communications. That's about it.” Mostly person-to-person. They've done one huge like worldwide broadcast in the last couple months.” -

Fremonts First case of Covid-19
This was a series of pictures that My football team posted at the Special Olympics basketball tournament that my football team volunteered at. No less than a week after this event, an article came out in the Fremont tribune saying that there was a player at the event who had just tested positive for Covid-19. Following this news me and the rest of my teammates had to self quarantine for a week. This was tough for us players and our coaches because many of my teammates lived on campus and did not have access to a kitchen to cook food. But thankfully our coaches were able to bring everyone quarantined food one a day during our week long Quarantine. -

Through Chinese Social Media -- 2
I’m a study-abroad student. Due to the virus, I had to stay at my home in New York. I got the update of the virus through Chinese social media, and I think it is really interesting. I’m going to share some posts from Chinese social media about the virus. During the time staying at home, I depend on food delivery. I want to say thank you for those people who are still working during this special moment. The post describes the restaurants donate the food to support people in the front line. All people are using their ways to support the community. -

Food insecurity Facebook group
Facebook is a great place for groups to communicate and seek help. Rapid Response WV created a community group for West Virginians who may be experiencing food insecurity. With a loss of jobs, people may be struggling to afford food and this group acts as a resource to those who may need it. #NortheasternJOTPY *Anjelica Oswald, Northeastern University -

New Way to Tip
We often don't think about all the little things that we do when coming in contact with people, like tipping a delivery driver face to face. With this pandemic you can't have that interaction any longer due to social distancing. A one time simple interaction you wouldn't otherwise think about has been changed. -

A beautiful people
So I am no story teller...I just wish to document an experience... Masiphumelele, affectionately known as Masi, is a township of an estimated 40 000 people in the South Peninsula of Cape Town, South Africa. If you know our townships, you'll know many of the residents live way below the poverty line at the best of times... hugely exacerbated by something like COVID-19 lockdown. So a huge initiative is feeding the people. And it is in this context that I experienced the absolute beauty of our people... Private individuals from all walks of life...many more affluent than their Masi neighbors...but not necessarily so... freely and generously giving of their time... money... energy... love...to come alongside Masi and deliver food parcels. Perhaps even more beautiful was the spirit of the Masi people. So welcoming... genuinely...not just because they may receive a food parcel. Children running alongside the vehicles, smiling, wanting to talk to the 'visitors' (not fully understanding social distancing 🤗). Residents going out of their way to help the donors find the intended recipients... they themselves not having much... but being sssssooo happy for a neighbor who might receive a parcel... even when they didn't and could well have done with one... the absolute gratitude and sadly the relief on the faces of those who did receive... just a basic parcel...but it meant meals for 2 weeks. And the heartbreak for the volunteers delivering the parcels... knowing that for every one who received, 100s more needed but wouldn't get... but not letting that sadness stop them... rather swallowing their own pain and carrying on with the work... knowing that at least a difference was made for a few people...like the story of the starfish. We often look at what COVID-19 has taken from us, and there is much lost. It has also given us so much...a glimpse into the beautiful souls of so many beautiful people...a privilege -

A new way to get coffee
I decided to get my at a dunkin while I was on a drive and I noticed that they are now handing off everyones order with this plastic cube to help eliminate contact with customers and to help with social distancing. Up here in the Northeast, we have a high amount of cases so this is showing that our fast food resturants are trying to come up with new ways to hand off orders without coming in contact with customers to keep everyone safe and healthy. #REL101 -

Texts from New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell: Severe weather, volunteering, homicides
When I realized I was going to be quarantined in New Orleans for the foreseeable future, I signed up for texts from the mayor. These three, sent within hours of one another, suggested an evocative sketch of the landscape that is New Orleans, encapsulating both the threats we face and the ways we respond to them. The first text was about the morning's severe weather (often a threat in New Orleans), which disrupted Covid testing. The next was about how we can help those facing the threat of food insecurity. The last compared the death rate from Covid to the city's homicide rate (which tells you as much about violence in the city as it does about the pandemic). I was talking on the phone last night with a friend who said she's heard a lot more gunfire in her Bronx neighborhood than usual. She said she worried about an increase in violence as the pandemic widens existing inequities in our country and people become more desperate. -

What about the children?
One thing that is overlooked during times like this are the children who come from broken, bad, non-functioning homes. As a school librarian, I celebrated the month+ off but dreaded the prospect of hunger and abuse the majority of my students at a Title 1, poverty stricken school would face. Our parish is currently scrambling to make sure there is food and learning access for our students, but I am afraid that my students, PreK-2nd grade, will slip through the cracks. And who knows where they will end up. -
