Cheering NYC
When the pandemic was at its peak, 7pm was when those who lived in New York City would stick their heads out of their apartments, from which they would sit day after day. Together, we clanged pots and pans in celebration of the frontline workers and honored those who survived, or who had been lost to COVID-19. -

How Covid-19 Has Changed My Life
The reflection that I have uploaded is a short summary of the biggest impacts Covid-19 has had on my life. This was the first time I've had the opportunity to share how Covid-19 has affected my life and I hope my experience helps others understand what life was like during these times. This submission is important to me because I want people 50 years from now to be able to read this and know how this pandemic has changed the world and how adaptable humans can become. -

Coronaland -- “Cast Away COVID Island”
With Carnival parades cancelled, somebody had the bright idea to start the Krewe of House Floats to (a) make up for it and (b) to offer work to unemployed float artisans. The results have gone beyond everyone's wildest imagination with 5,000+ people signing up in New Orleans, surrounding parishes, and around the world.“Cast Away COVID Island” on Vallette St. in Algiers Point shows all the craziness we put up with this past year. -

Everyone But Me is Vaccinated
As of today, 1/28/2021, many people have already had their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Many of my friends and family members work in healthcare, so they are either on their first or second dosages. I myself have not had the vaccine, as I do not work in healthcare. I was surprised to see that this vaccine has more side effects than typical vaccines. After their shot, many feel their arm may be sore, or get exceptionally tired. My family member, after their second dose, felt slightly feverish. Luckily, these are the expected side effects, and they don't last more than around 1-2 days! I believe that they are now extending vaccines to front-line workers such as police, firefighters, etc in Arizona. Arizona has not been very good at social distancing, and I know many people personally who have gotten COVID (who luckily have recovered), so I hope that the general public can have access to the vaccine soon. -

Differences in who receives the COVID vaccine
As of right now, some professors and University staff in various colleges are able to receive the COVID vaccine before students. Within the population of students, there is even more fracturing of who is able to receive the vaccine as some students may be high risk which then puts them in different vaccine categories. Tulane University is vaccinating, “School of Medicine, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and School of Social Work faculty, staff and students who work directly with others in the New Orleans community, Campus Health staff who work directly with infected students and employees and their close contacts, Frontline food service and custodial/operations staff who engage directly with the student body in dining halls, residential facilities and elsewhere, and Employees over 70 years of age.” Schools are also distinguishing which students specifically get the vaccine as some have begun providing it for medical students. https://www.wwltv.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/tulane-to-receive-5000-covid-vaccine-doses/289-b7b9e80e-4538-4190-ba1e-7a7bfd879221 https://www.kwtx.com/2021/01/21/temple-college-nursing-students-qualify-to-receive-covid-19-vaccine/ -

Medical Students
As medical students begin to graduate and enter the workforce, they are being called upon to work with COVID patients and thus becoming eligible to receive the COVID vaccine. These students are able to circumvent their initial vaccine placement because they are frontline workers. In some cases, they are still eligible to receive the vaccine while students. For example, Tufts students in their third and fourth year are eligible to receive the vaccine. Other colleges have also started providing vaccines to students. The logic the Cooper Medical School uses for vaccinating their students is that the United States is currently facing a physician shortage, so they need their graduates ready to serve in the medical field immediately after graduating. https://now.tufts.edu/articles/tufts-medical-and-dental-students-start-receive-covid-19-vaccine https://cmsru.rowan.edu/about/news/details/2020-cmsru-students-being-receiving-covid19-vaccinations -

Working in Health Care During a Pandemic
Back in March when we all went into quarantine as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak, I immediately got a call from work saying that they needed people to work because the elder staff had called out. I work as a Pharmacy Technician at a family-owned local pharmacy called Keyes Drug. I have been working here for almost four years, but at the time I had stopped because of living in the city at my college dorm. Once we got sent home, it was all the more reason to step up and work. So I started working at the pharmacy again almost full time every day when this craziness was going on. I got used to the routine of cleansing and wearing a mask, and the life of an essential worker during a pandemic. It was an absolute nightmare. We had no staff and I had to manage three people’s jobs. People were rude and angry all the time, but it wasn’t surprising considering they were stuck at home for weeks that would turn into months. I wasn’t able to take breaks most days, which caused me to lose a lot of weight in 3-4 months. At the end of the day, I knew I was doing service for the people of my community by providing them with medical care and their prescriptions. On the bright side, I was making money while my mom was unemployed, so I was able to help out a little. In times like these, we young people have to step up and take responsibility when the elderly can’t. -

Masks and Violence: Ontario man dies in police shooting after mask dispute in grocery store
An article relaying an incident which encompasses two of the largest issues facing Canada, and Ontario, specifically at the moment: the coronavirus (and subsequent public health measures) and changing views on the role of police in society. A 78 year old man was shot and killed by police after if he refused to wear a mask in a supermarket in cottage country north of Toronto. He then assaulted an employee and drove off recklessly, prompting police to attend his house to arrest him, where the fatal incident occurred. The body responsible for the investigation of this and other police involved deaths in Ontario, the SIU, has come under scrutiny this year as social justice advocates feel it is inappropriate for a watch dog body to be made up largely of retired police officers is not impartial. -

Hospital Thanks Krewe of Red Beans for Food Donations, New Orleans East, LA
New Orleans East Hospital thanks Krewe of Red Beans for their regular and ongoing donations of catered food for hospital workers. Krewe of Red Beans is a Carnival parading social club. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Krewe of Red Beans began collecting donations and using the funds to hire local restaurants, financially devastated by the stay-at-home order, to prepared catered meals for local hospital staff. The krewe also employs out of work musicians to deliver the food to hospitals.
