Indie Rock Amid a Pandemic
My first major break from the COVID-19 pandemic was attending a concert. I saw Houndmouth perform at the Vogue theater in Indianapolis on Nov. 26, 2021. I flew home for Thanksgiving from AZ to IN and my friends invited me to see one of our favorite bands. I thought, well I've already had so much exposure to other people on this trip, what more could this outing do? I felt safe enough to put myself out there maskless for the first time in a year and a half. November of 2021 was a significant lull in the number of COVID cases, likely the downturn from the Delta variant. I was glad to get out for this experience because barely a month later the Omicron variant hit nationwide and discouraged us from such outings for a few more months. The concert was an absolute blast. There was a recent change to the band's lineup after their new album Good for You came out. I got to stand right up front with loud bass, thunderous drums, and some very good friends I hadn't seen in a long time. It was like a literal breath of fresh air to "get back to normal" even though we'd be masking back up once again for about another year. Since I was coming from the Navajo Nation where I teach high schoolers, our mandates and regulations were far stricter than Indiana's where many folks had enough of the rules and ditched their social distancing and mask early. Returning back to the Rez, I had to resume conforming to tight regulations, especially in my classroom. -

Blood Donation
I donated blood today. They've had a shortage of donors, so I decided to do it. Pretty simple process, and I got to talk to people in real life and they gave me snacks after. It was actually fun. My mom made me the mask. -

Going home party - HIST30060
When the new Delta variant led Melbourne’s COVID cases to explode over the second half of 2021, smaller states looked set to shut borders with Victoria. Consequently, I had to leave my new home at in Melbourne to get back to Tasmania in late September. Not knowing when we’d all see each other again, my flatmates held a small party for me. We stayed up until 4am. This is a picture one of them took at the event. -

Zoom birthday party - HIST30060
My 20th birthday party, held on Zoom. We tried to convince George that his microphone was muted, and he proceeded to abuse us via Microsoft word and the “share screen” function. While they didn’t compare to real life interaction, Zoom provided many new creative ways to converse which we had a lot of fun exploring. -

Tsushima Island, my escape
This is a picture of the platinum I received for beating the game Ghost of Tsushima on October 3rd, 2020. This game came out on July 17th, 2020 and it became my Game of the Year. This was also the year of COVID-19, so I had a lot more free time to play the game and beat it in several months. The pandemic was a difficult time and I just wanted something fun to play. I wanted to forget everything happening in the real world with the pandemic and other problems by jumping back to 13th Century Japan. The game is set on Tsushima Island as the Mongol Empire took its first step toward invading Japan. Ghost of Tsushima is a beautiful, but a brutal game that I had so much fun with. The soundtrack is beautiful and there were foxes to pet! My main character shifted from a samurai who followed the strict Bushido code into a brutal assassin in desperate times. I can relate to this idea of shifting between jobs because I had to shift my job around to adjust to the desperate times I was experiencing. I had to shift from working in person to working online. I wanted to add this to the collection because I want to show how I could escape the reality of COVID-19 and have some fun. -

Pandemic Rules Aren't Fun
I'm a nanny to three kids. As a fun activity, I wanted to take them on an adventure to Build-a-Bear. For those unfamiliar with this store, you choose an animal that has no stuffing in it; then, you go to a big machine that has the stuffing in it, and with the help of an employee, you stuff your own animal. You can pick out clothes, accessories, a name, etc. It's very fun and something I've done multiple times as a child myself. I explained the process to the kids and they were very excited! However, upon arrival, we discovered that the kids couldn't help stuff their animal. They had to stand behind a rope while the employee does it for them. We understood this was the social distancing protocol. The kids were ok with it and had fun anyway, but I was a little disappointed because this was one of the best features. We have safety protocols for a reason and I comply with all of them. It's just frustrating when you want to have fun to get your mind off work or problems in the world that the pandemic reminds you it's there at every turn. -

Magical Summer!
Because of all the restrictions in place last summer, it was hard to watch all the kids in the neighborhood try and find stuff to keep them occupied and happy. I live next door to three little girls. So one day, when they were not home, I built a small fairy house on the tree between our yards. The girls believed that a fairy had moved in and they couldn't be more excited. Every few days or so I would go and sprinkle glitter around the house so it looked like the fairy was walking around the house. It was so much fun to hear the girls yell in excitement when they saw new glitter or a new addition to the fairy house. It made them and happy and it made me happy. Of course, their parents knew it was me, but to their young imaginations, a real live fairy was living in their yard. -

After “Normal”
alorant is a game created by Riot Games, and it was initially known as Project A. It borrows elements from League of Legends,Counter-Strike: Global offensive and Overwatch. It is a 5v5 first- person shooter where there is one attack team and the other defends. It is very similar to search and destroy. Since the pandemic it has become mportant to me since im not allowed out of the house, it is where I can get on and play or socialize with my friends. It is where i can talk to others and just relax. -

High school proms go on, but with COVID-19 restrictions
Prom has been cancelled across the United States. While this is the case for most places, select locations are finding ways to make prom possible. For a school district in Pennsylvania, this meant having prom on the football field. This allowed them to enforce social distancing while still allowing the students to play games and have fun. -

Corona Clothing #1: "Staying in is the new Going Out"
I took this picture in a Ross store in Round Rock TX last summer. It reads "Staying in is the new Going Out". This is the first instance I had ever seen of a clothing item referencing COVID-19. The shirt implies that with all the stay at home orders, lockdowns, and closures taking leisure time at home is the new way to have fun and enjoy yourself. Noticed that it is also lounge wear. I did not realize it at the time, but many items of Corona themed clothing are casual or lounge wear likely both as a funny gesture and to suit the natural desire to wear comfortable clothing when confined at home for extended periods. -

Instant Pot cooking
I bought an Instant Pot a year or two ago when it was the new and big thing in cooking. When I got it, I like many felt quite overwhelmed by the device. Therefor, I really only used it every once in a while to cook rice. Otherwise it stayed packed away in my kitchen. Then the Covid lockdowns started in March, which resulted in more time at home and a desire to do other types of cooking. I started to watch Youtube videos on the various functions and countless recepies. During the lockdowns, I have used my Instant Pot to make everything from soups/stocks/stews to tacos and all sorts of different types of dishes. I would say that I used the Instant Pot more than (or as much as) any other tool in my kitchen during the lockdown. -

A Year Without Rowing
The end of my freshman (2019-2020) spring semester of college was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic gradually growing more and more. Not being able to have a normal freshman year and sophomore year (2020-2021) was not what I was expecting going into college. I have always expected my college years to be full of fun times and rowing but instead they have been full of the COVID-19 pandemic and online school at home. Traveling has been cancelled due to the pandemic which is what stopped studying abroad chances in different countries around the world. Not only was my college years cut short but also my college rowing career as well. Freshman year the spring season was cancelled due to COVID-19 as well as my sophomore fall season and maybe spring. The spring break has been cancelled for the school due to the pandemic which meant the teams spring break training has been taken away which is where we get into racing sprint pieces on the water. Being able to race and perform in regattas at a collegiate level is something I have always looked forward to throughout my high school years. Not being able to have the chance to compete against other colleges especially in the main season of rowing which is spring is something that is upsetting to myself, the rest of the team, and the rowing community. Having limited rowing opportunities for practice such as small boat rowing, small group pods, and the location. Strict policies from the athletics department have been guiding what we can and cannot do for rowing. There are plans for my sophomore spring season of competing against other college rowing teams if the COVID-19 pandemic begins to decline. If the pandemic begins to decline it will lead to less policies enabling the team to practice as a whole team and in bigger boats like 8s and 4s. This will allow the teams to practice at a higher degree on and off the water to become ready to compete in the regattas. The picture that I have attached is from my fall season of freshman year when there was no pandemic going on. I picked this picture because it is special to me because my collegiate rowing season has only been a semester long. Wishing that my next two years of rowing will be COVID-19 free and full of races and regattas. Hopefully the vaccine will help fix the pandemic and move towards the future into a COVID-19 free life. -

German cafe tells customers to wear pool noodles to enforce social distancing
I love that this German café found a way to inject some humor into social distancing. It is absolutely hysterical and provides much needed levity during this stressful time for so many. Of course, my brain immediately went to wondering if the café re-uses those hats. Although customers may not catch COVID-19, they could catch lice. Eeeek! -

Procedure during COVID-19
During COVID-19, there are many procedures you have to follow. We had to stay inside our houses. It has been about a year-long process. At first, it was fun adapting to a new lifestyle, but after a while, I wanted to go to places and it was starting to get boring. However, I was able to talk to my friends over the phone and through a chatting application called discord. Another procedure was staying six feet apart. With friends, this was not so bad of a rule, but with family, it is always nice to be able to hug your loved ones. However, we would use air hugs and it was kind of fun. Overall, COVID-19 procedures were fun at the start, but over time, they would get boring and we had to find new ways to get around it. -

While virtual learning from home my experience was very interesting it wasn't fun but it was also really boring sometimes. My routine would be to wake up grab breakfast grab my computer and started zooming online. I once did school in Utah which was pretty fun. The benefits of being online were probably being able to wear sweatpants all day and eating food when I wanted to and also probably not waking up as early and the obstacles of being online where I felt like I didn't get the full feel of being at school because we were virtual learning and also I couldn't see any of my friends. -

virtual learning
When it was March, i first heard about this Virtual learning and i was very confused on how that would work. For the first 3 months of quarantine, i was at my dads in Northern California and thats where i started virtual learning and ended 7th grade. Virtual learning in the beginning was actually really fun. but as it progressed, it started to be emotionally and mentally draining. i wasnt taking care of myself and it became too much. so at the beginning of 8th grade, i decided to try and get myself back together. learning online was sometimes a struggle, like when we needed a paper we would have to print it or we would have to write everything down. it was often that i didn't really learn anything. it was a lot harder to learn online then i expected. although it was nice being home everyday, i found myself often in my bed and turning off my camera. yes, there are some negatives to virtual learning but, there are a lot of positives also. i stayed healthy. i didn't get sick which was the best positive that i could get. my grades werent as bad as i thought they were. i just needed to slow down and pay attention. -

What Christmas was like with Covid-19
My Christmas was pretty normal, to be honest. The main difference was I was not able the see my grandparents. That was very sad because I spend Christmas with them almost every year. I was able to talk to my whole family everywhere over zoom witch is something we have never done. That was fun to talk to some of my family that I don't talk to very often. But other than that my Christmas was pretty normal. -

Celebrating Christmas during the Pandemic
This Christmas we had to change some of our traditions. Although it could not all be the same we ended up still having a wonderful Christmas. On Christmas eve we wanted to do something special but everything is closed so we just hang out with each other and then at night we went to a church service. Christmas morning, we really didn't have much planned for Christmas so we decided to head to Mammoth. In the morning we opened up all of our presents and packed our bags and got in the car to go off to Mammoth. Once we got to Mammoth we had a lot of fun skiing. The second night we were there our family friends came up to so we got to have dinner with them and play games. A few days later we went home and that's were our break ended. In all we had a wonderful break but I was also very excited to come back to school. -

Covid Christmas
I got out of school for Christmas break. Once I was out of school, I felt like it just was a normal weekend due to being online. Usually, I celebrate with my friends at school but we couldn't do that. I just tried to excite myself for Christmas but I just felt empty because I knew I couldn't see my whole family. Its Christmas. Usually, on Christmas Eve I get home from being with my uncle and grandparents. But we did not go to that so I was really down. I walked downstairs to the presents. I waited for my sister to get up. She got up we were ready to open gifts. My grandma was not scared of covid and still came even we told her not to. We were still happy to see her. It was fun opening gifts. But after I had fun, I realized we weren't going to be able to see my other grandparents after opening gifts. Usually, we go to our other family but not this time. I was sad because usually after opening gifts I am excited to go. I spent time with my one grandparent and also had fun with my parents and sister. But even though we had a fun time, it wasn't the same. -

Christmas day in 2020
My Christmas was very different this year because of this pandemic. Usually my family will do many other things on Christmas day like going to Chicago, ice skating, and also seeing some other family that weren't able to make it this year. Instead we had to change it up this year to make everything safe for our family. We mostly stayed inside of the house but when we did leave we went to the beach and went to go see cool Christmas lights. When we were in the house we were cooking, watching movies, and jumping on the trampoline. This year was pretty different for my family but we found different ways to have fun even if we weren't going any where. -

Family Board Game Night
While in quarantine during this pandemic, my family and I were forced to spend much time together. We often wondered what we could do to make the time pass while most of us were out of work because of Covid-19. My family members and I, as well as my neighbors who we were quarantining with, decided that it would be a fun idea to start playing board games. These games consisted of Monopoly, What Do You Meme, and Cards Against Humanity. Playing these games brought my family closer together while fighting through a tough time in life. -

Bike Trail Pandemic Safety
This is a picture of a sign to “Please Wear A Mask” by one of the entrances of to my hometown’s bike path. Originally a local place by the local lake to take family and have a nice picnic, go on a brisk walk, or have a fun ride on your bike, the trail is a place where most locals congregate. Due to COVID-19, this local spot has grown a lot of attraction because when people have nothing else to do, they take up nature as their past time. However, this sign was placed to remind people that the pandemic is still real and all around us, and that people should still stay safe while partaking in a fun past time. Having these warnings out in public spaces help people keep a sense of mindfulness of others as they continue on their own endeavors of their day to day lives as we all try to live though a pandemic that has shaken the core of how people do live. -

Going to College with COVID
Going to college is fun, but because of COVID I will not be able to experience the full definition of college. But I am still glad that my college still puts out great things for me and my friends to do to experience somewhat of what college is supposed to be. -

My Halloween as a Dinosaur
I refused to let Covid-19 ruin my favorite day of the year—Halloween. It only took a little extra work to ensure I could enjoy it safely with my friends and neighbors. First, I went on Amazon and found an inflatable dinosaur costume which covered my entire body and face. Next, I prepackaged all the Halloween candy into little baggies while wearing a mask and gloves. I set up a six foot table in my front yard where I set out a few treats at a time. The evening started off slow with only a handful of trick-or-treaters stopping by before heading out to local socially distanced Halloween events. However, when the sun went down more trick-or-treaters emerged. From adults to small children, everyone was masked up. During a normal Halloween in my neighborhood, multiple families would pile into one car and cruise the neighborhood together. This time the groups were much smaller. The kids were younger too. Many parents didn’t want their little ones to miss out on the festivities. Overall, Halloween turned out much better than I expected this year. My costume provided much needed laughter at work, and my neighbors enjoyed taking pictures of their kids with a giant blue dinosaur. -

Trick-or-Treating During the COVID-19 Pandemic
For this year's Halloween, my mother wanted to hand out candy in a safe, fun way for the trick or treaters to enjoy. She found a way to maintain the appropriate 6-foot distance by utilizing a long PVC pipe as a chute to send the candy shooting down to the trick-or-treaters below on our front porch steps. This picture exemplifies the measures people have done to maintain normality amidst this devastating crisis and I believe it captures the common effort to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19 while still engaging in fun activities. -

Tick Tock
The pandemic was the least of my worries as a freshman in college who was still adjusting, but it soon overtook my life. Not only did I not come back from spring break, but the entire university shifted to online learning as it was too unsafe to be in class. I left my perfectly curated dorm, my professors, and friends to something that I had not given ten minutes of my time a month prior. The pandemic had been looming in the background and I had heard about it and never really thought it would affect me but I was very wrong. The virus changed my view of schooling, the way the government looks at its citizens and how we treat one another. During the initial lockdown I observed many ways in which everyone tried to cope with our reality. There were those making banana bread, sourdough bread, and binging tv shows on Netflix such as Tiger King. Then there were the college and high school kids who were all staying up till the early hours of the morning mindlessly scrolling through social media, more specifically TikTok, since there was no school to wake up early for. Now I understand that social media can be, and is toxic, but the app TikTok has made a relatively good space for all people and has proven to be a good way to spread information to a younger generation rapidly. As someone who had only a few months ago been writing papers and doing homework in my dorm I can without a doubt say I would never have envisioned myself on an app watching 30 or 60 second videos for hours on end. The videos on the app are comedy related, informative on niche topics, activism, such as the Black Lives Matter Protests, political and just about everything under the sun. Although it is only an app that could vanish at any moment, it has become part of millions of college and high school students' lives. It has offered a distraction from all of the uncertainty in the world and an outlet to share their experiences. I personally attempted to make a TikTok with my friends as we kept six feet apart from each other and although it never turned out it still offered a distraction from the fact that we were not able to just go to one another's houses and hang out - we had to meet in our old high school parking lot. The app seems so benign to those who are not on it, but from what I have seen it has offered happiness in a time of world turmoil. -

Making the Most of It
This is my best friend and I taking graduation pictures. COVID-19 closed schools and cancelled senior events, and my best friend moved away. We made the most of it and she spent so much time with me. We filled each day with different celebrations or activities before college. I had to move away first, so we made the most of the time we had. That is what the COVID-19 pandemic has taught me. We need to live right now while following safety measures. It may not feel normal, but you will still have fun. Make the most out of it because there is no use in waiting for normalcy. -

Screaming is not allowed on Japanese roller coasters in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The instructions to riders are "Scream in your heart" instead. Then they attached a video of two solemn-faced men taking a "fun" ride on the roller coaster. They wear masks and don't crack a smile or show any emotion at all.
