Tastes like Home
The pandemic changed so many things about everyday life, and even our food wasn't spared. Not only did the effects of COVID-19 attack our sense of taste, but it even affected those who hadn't contracted it. Going out to restaurants was completely out of the question, and to avoid spending too much money on take-out, my family continued to brave the grocery stores. There was a silver lining, though, because it started to change the way we felt about meals. I spent more time cooking with them back home in Vienna, VA, and now that I live here in Tempe I find a lot of those habits have stuck with me. I'm especially glad that I started baking more before I left home. Baking was a way to get the whole family together and give each of us something to look forward to that day, in a time when days kind of blended together and none of us knew what to expect. What's more, we'd all heard stories about how early COVID symptoms included loss of smell and taste, so I think there was a small part of me that was reassured by actually being able to taste what we'd all worked on together. I included a brownie recipe that I use a lot with this post, so you can try it if you like and get a taste for how it still offers me some comfort. -

Grocery Shopping During a Pandemic
When COVID-19 became classified as a pandemic the United States started to shut down. As a result, grocery stores experienced long lines and shortages. Toilet paper, bathroom essentials, and cleaning supplies quickly sold out and became a difficult commodity to purchase. These shortages went on for months. The importance of this is to demonstrate how unprepared humanity is for an event like COVID-19. Seeing these pictures and experiencing the long lines and shortages for myself made me realize how dependant I am on the grocery store. This experience gave me a sense of awareness. I became aware of how easy it was for me to go to the local grocery store and get what I needed before COVID-19; additionally, I became aware of how quickly that can change. -

Sourdough bread fail
During the first few weeks of COVID-19, I found myself not wanting to grocery shop and to focus on making do with what we had. However, as I have a number of food allergies, I have to be careful about what I eat. So I attempted to make bread—not in the TikTok viral-trendsetting-sense, but rather as a means to an end. My efforts were shortlived. I tried three recipes. Each was a disaster. Here is the beginnings of a sourdough starter that is vegan and gluten free. I fed it and cared for it gingerly for a week - nursing it along with fresh g-f flour every day, as a ritual to puncuate my day in the way that commuting to work used to do. On the 8th day, mold grew in the bowl and I tossed out the starter. -

Grocery Shopping in a Pandemic
My son and I grocery shopping at Trader Joe's in Castro Valley - everyone knows the drill, you find the marker on the ground to tell you where to stand so you're 6 feet behind the person in front of you. You wear your mask. The line goes fairly quickly, and I've never heard anyone act entitled or complain. (note: I submitted this but I think the photo didn't attach) -

Costco under the COVID-19
I was the very first few weeks after the lockdown. At that time, most of the groceries are sold out at the local grocery stores (Albertsons, Ralphs). No meat, milk, even toilet paper can be found on the shelves. Costco became the only store where food supply is sufficient. My roommate and I went to Costco to stock up some food. The store opened at 10 am and when we got there, the line was all the way to the end of the road (~50 meters). People were following the social distancing and 1/3 of them were wearing masks -

Isolation and panic
When we were first getting word on the Corona virus and it spreading, nobody could imagine a country shut down. As reports of toilet paper hoarding, of all things, went viral, I, as a clear head, was telling people not to panic, not to give in to the fear. My work told us to work from home and so I started March 17th, 2020 working from home. The isolation is incredible. Your co-workers are gone, your book clubs, religious gatherings, meeting neighbors for coffee, mom's groups are suddenly all gone, in a blink of an eye. It is just you and your laptop. So after a few days of isolation, I decided to walk to my neigborhood grocery store for a few things. I walk in and at first everything seems normal. Then I saw the canned and bagged goods aisle, totally empty!! empty, shelves, and shelves and shelves - empty. That deep reaction is fear and panic. I had to really stop myself from panicking. As I walked around, other shelves of paper goods were all empty. Scary! I went over to the fruit and veggie aisles and those were full, which calmed me a bit. Everyone was keeping their distance checking out, so that kept me calm, too. But seeing those empty shelves really got to me because those are something you never see! This is week 4 of tele-working. I go for my daily walks, avoiding people. I pick up fast food or restaurant food or have them delivered, I visit my grocery store once a week or so. But yeah, the isolation is total. -
