Not a Testing Site
In March 2020, Target, in tandem with other major retailers, announced that their company would assist in efforts to expand COVID-19 testing. This sign posted on the entrance to a west Wichita, Kansas, Target store makes it clear to customers that this particular site was not one of those facilities. Taken on April 3, this photo reflects the painstakingly slow expansion of the country's testing capabilities. -

Treatment of Essential Workers: Monitoring Capacity
This project aims to document the treatment and reactions to the treatment of the essential workers during this pandemic. This is a picture my friend took outside of the store during her shift at a grocery store. It is very early in the morning, but there are still cars that can be seen in the parking lot and her job is to limit the amount of people in the store so that social distancing can be practiced, as well as making sure only one member per household is allowed in the store at one time so that more people are able to get groceries. -

Interpreting a Pandemic
I chose to focus on creating a collage that incorporates bits and pieces of different notable events that have taken place during this pandemic. This multi-media collage utilizes paper, gloves, masks, and cellophane in order to depict how this pandemic has changed our lives - from overpriced purell to lines at grocery stores and zoom meetings. I tried to incorporate many different pieces of history that anyone that lived through this era could relate to and I hope that came across! -

Checkout at the Supermarket
Workers at the checkout at Woodman's supermarket in Onalaska, WI wear different types of masks as they bag food. A clear barrier between customers and workers was also installed to protect people. Woodman's, like many supermarkets, had to put limits on the amount of certain items customers could buy due to hoarding of those items -

Cops and Toilet Paper
I was down to my last roll of toilet paper. I had ordered more but knew it may not come for another two weeks... something had to be done. First I went to Fry's… No toilet paper, Then Safeway and Target...no toilet paper. I had almost been defeated but decided to try out Walmart. As I was walking in I saw about five police cruisers parked in front of the store. As I approach the toilet paper aisle I am greeted by an officer telling me to wait in line if I wanted toilet paper. After a short wait I make out with a 24 pack. #REL101 -

Limiting the Line
Hmart is an asian market that carries a variety of food items popular in many different asian countries. It is one of my favorite grocery stores to shop at. It was also the first grocery store I have been to doing the pandemic that has i.plemented careful procedures for guest whose entering the store. First, the workers outside are keeping close count of how many people are in the store by monitoring the entrance and exit. They are also sanitizing all shopping baskets and carts at the entrance so guest don't have to touch them until after watching then be sanitized, and finally the store is giving plastic gloves to consumers who enter the store and do not have a pair. I also noticed while doing my grocery shopping that every single person in the store had some form of face mask on them, including employees. I know as time goes on more stores will implement similar policies, for now it seems like Hmart is adjusting well to the pandemic and taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. Seeing this just confirmed why Hmart will continue to be my go to store for supplies during the outbreak. -

The Importance of Family
This is a photo of my little sister and I embarking on a 'journey' to the grocery store. Before this strange time, running an errand was something I never gave any thought. It oddly feels like so long ago: I would just grab my car keys and head out the door. Now, I need to take multiple precautionary steps before I go in public. It is still near impossible to wrap my head around the fact that the steps one needs to take (finding something to cover your face, having gloves ready or at least having hand sanitizer accessible) could literally be a matter of life and death. Not to mention, one needs to wipe down all the items that are purchased and brought back home. Now that I calculate my every move, like limiting what I touch, I realize more and more how much I previously took the little things for granted. I miss being around my friends, playing board games and sharing pizza. These are lonely times, and I could only imagine what it is like for those who live alone. I am so lucky to have my family so I don't go totally insane. This time has brought opportunities for us to have long talks that we would not normally have. This stagnant time has allowed us to discuss topics we would not otherwise dive into: topics of faith, philosophy, community, and what it means to be human. #REL101 -

The Great Grocery Store Run
Throughout my whole life I have never seen people so scared and/or lost like I did during this pandemic. Hearing on the news that the COVID-19 pandemic was sweeping across the country and that we were encouraged to stock up on essential supplies I decided to head to the nearest Walmart and get the things I would need for daily life to continue. As I walk into the grocery store, I could immediately feel the panic that was upon every individual that was in the building. Shopping carts full to the max as well as almost everybody having on mask and/or gloves. Shelves were almost completely empty with nothing really left for the workers to stock them back up with. People fighting over items that we considered very small and unimportant just a few days ago. I was completely shocked at just how real this invisible virus had become to everybody, and what people were willing to do to make sure that they were able to survive. A day I will always remember as the Great Grocery Store Run. #REL101 -

No matter what: Racism is not okay
This pandemic is hard enough for all of us. As a health care worker, I've been deemed one of the special "frontliners" the ones who still put on pants everyday to go to work and serve. So shouldn't I be happy? Isn't this what I signed up for when I decided to be a pharmacy technician part time during my undergrad? I'm happy to serve my community. I'm happy to be able to still be okay and healthy and make a difference by helping my patients. But I didn't sign up for racism. I didn't sign up for face rashes because my allergies still happen and when I sneeze all that snot and saliva gets caught in my mask, and by the end of the day my nose and lips are bright red. I didn't sign up for microagressions with anything, not even my age. In the pharmacy, I've had customers make inappropriate jabs at me about my age, ask for older looking workers because they don't think I'm experienced enough, but none of that prepared me for microagressions based on my race. Coming back to work during the pandemic was strange. Because I had traveled back to Southern California, and back up to Northern California for school, my boss didn't schedule me for 2 weeks-- weeks I had asked for off due to school events that were now, cancelled. Coming back during the crisis, I noticed little things. Customers sanitizing every thing I touched, standing a bit farther away from me from behind the plexiglass, but stepping closer to speak with other store associates, asking for other workers. This was fine. I just continued to serve with a smile. But today, today was the worst one yet. As I walked back into the store from lunch, two ladies blocked the walkway to get through to the pharmacy. Needing to get by, I walked a little close to them, but used an aisleway to get by. Noticing me walk by, they decided to scream: 6 FEET AWAY. SOCIAL DISTANCING at me, and only me. Not at the non-asian looking company employee clearly a bit too close to them, not at any other passerby's, just me- a Vietnamese girl who just needed to get back to her job. I still had a good 4 hours to go in the shift, and that didn't include crying. Keeping a straight face, I walked past them, and continued on to do my job. I kept a straight face the whole shift, until afterwards, I got into my car and cried. Those words shouldn't have hurt me in that way. I shouldn't have to hide my feelings, but they were there. As I sat in silence, finally steady enough to drive home, those words still haunted me the entire way back, until I got home, got into my room, turned off all the lights and continued to cry for all the hurt I felt from those words. Social distancing is important, but be mindful of the space you are taking up, and who is around you. Racism is never okay, and I hope my reaction to these words and actions prevent you from do anything of the same sort. Just because we're Asian does not mean this pandemic is our fault. We're all in this together, so we need to support each other, not tear each other down. -

Happy Birthday and the Fear of Covid19
Today was my dad’s 59th birthday and it was crazy that we couldn’t really celebrate. This whole Covid19 feels like a bad dream or a scary movie to be honest. It is also Easter and it is strange that we couldn’t do our typical events and Easter egg hunt for our nephews. It is so tragic turning on the news and seeing how many people have died from this terrible virus. This whole experience doesn’t even feel real at times. I feel lucky that my family is still safe, but I worry about my brother who has to work every single day surrounded by customers. I fear he will get sick or my sister in law. I am lucky that I have limited contact with people, but my job still requires me to meet others. It is scary how people have also reacted to this event and hoarded so much toilet paper and supplies. I am terrified every time I go to the grocery store to get supplies and food. There is never toilet paper or paper towels. Trying to find certain things such as meat or cheese or even eggs is close to impossible at my local grocery store. It is insane that there is not even a bottle of soap or any Lysol to purchase. I miss my nephews and I miss going to school. I am so lucky compared to so many others, but I am still terrified for the future. This feels like a scary movie or an episode of Doom’s Day Preppers. -

Social Distancing at the Grocery Store
There I was, at the grocery store. As I approached the checkout line, I waited, to let the man ahead of me have some space. As he paid I put my groceries on the conveyor, figuring the space between us was more than sufficient. He looked at me and asked, “a little close, aren’t you?” I thought I was sufficiently distant. I said, “ excuse me.” In a perturbed voice, he asked, “Did you see the sign?” What sign? I wondered? I decided to step back and as I stepped back, I looked for the sign. There it was. So, I snapped this picture as he finished. He left. I checked out. As I left the store, I noticed that same guy laughing and joking with his buddies. Not two feet from each other. I laughed to myself. So much for social distancing. -
