Nurse handover Emergency Department, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne
This photograph was taken in August 2020, the time when daily and active cases in Victoria's second wave were at their peak with hospitals adapting services and protocols in response. The photograph shows a nurse handover in the hospital's Emergency Department. The red line on the floor marks the boundary of the "hot zone" area dedicated to the care of patients regarded as infectious. Staff wear prescribed Level 4 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) of gowns, face protection and N95 masks. -

Australian Health Worker quote on not being valued
There's a bit of a feeling, from a nursing perspective, that we're just numbers. You know that we're not. We're not. Quote from Female aged 42, Intensive Care Nurse. Image created by the Health Worker Voices project: https://mspgh.unimelb.edu.au/healthworkervoices -

COVID-19 Contact Tracing Notice - Healthcare Worker
This was an email sent to my brother, who is a third year Doctor of Optometry student at the University of Melbourne. One of his classmates had tested positive for Covid-19, and he had been in the same lab room doing practicals together during this time. His whole class was asked to self-isolate for a two-week period, and his exams for the semester were pushed back as well. Although he does no directly deal with Covid-19 related patients, as a healthcare worker, he must come in close contact with people on a greater basis than almost any other profession. He isolated for the required period and was tested twice, thankfully with a negative result both times. Each test required 1-2 days turnaround. This object shows the steps organisations are taking to ensure proper contact tracing and in taking care both their patients and students. It also shows how healthcare workers, who come in close physical contact with others, are inherently at high risk and need to be extra careful not to catch or spread diseases. HIST30060. -

Hard Working Mom
This picture is not only important to me, but as well as my family. My mom is a nurse at Centennial Hills Hospital and has had to endure a lot throughout this pandemic; this flag was a gift from a fellow family member as a way to say thank you for all of her hard work. Having a mom as a nurse has always been difficult, weird and long work hours calls for less time to spend with family, nonetheless I am proud to say that my mom and her team have been put through the ringer and made it out okay. The government has called for all new protocol within the hospital to keep everyone as safe as they can. My mom and her team continue to keep working hard despite all the challenges they and the hospital as a whole have been through. -

Notes for Nurses
This is a photo from inside the COVID unit at St. Joseph's Hospital. Children all over the Phoenix area have been sending drawings and letters to the frontline workers, thanking and encouraging them to keep saving lives. The nurses on the unit have put them all over the windows and walls for everyone to see. -

Why haven't we done more to protect the lives of healthcare workers?
The death of frontline health workers in the US was a tragedy. The majority of those who died were minorities and immigrants. The lack of ppe only made that problem worse, yet they still chose to stick around, wanting to help others. This speaks to my experience as a child of a frontline, minority healthcare worker. I was terrified to see my mother go to work every day, knowing that she would come into contact with this virus and put our entire household, including my then one-year old sister at risk. I don’t feel we have adequately served or protected our healthcare workers. A free meal at McDonalds is not adequate enough compensation given the risk that they were taking. Many did not receive pay increases yet were still expected to come to work every day. The lack of PPE only increased my anxiety. Many times, she was forced to reuse things like masks and gowns because the hospital did not have. She was made to feel like she could not quit or work less because the need for healthcare works was so great. She believed she would be perceived as selfish, and uncaring for choosing her family over the pandemic and its victims which really broke my heart. There were a lot of times that I could see her struggling with the fact that she was helping others but endangering her own family in the process. I have a lot of respect for her because she chose to persevere in the face of Covdi-19 and believe that more of our healthcare workers perspectives and stories should be known. They should receive more than they have and should have been more protected than they were. -

Work Reality
My mother has been a healthcare employee for over 20 years. She loves her job and her patients. She is also immunodeficient. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, she was placed on medical leave. After 3 months in isolation, she returned to work to face her new reality. Thankfully, in the time she was at home, her employer acquired ppe and has implemented strict social distancing policies, including teleappoinments. Her employer has been understanding and supportive of her medical needs. And she feels as safe as she can feel when she is at work. But this doesn't mean it is easy. She wears two masks (an N95 mask covered by a secondary mask) and goggles the entire time she works. She has deep seemingly permanent indentations from the ppe on her face. Even with the protection, she still worries about her level of exposure as she comes into contact with 20-30 different patients per day. I have only seen her once since the shelter-in-place orders began in California. And I'm not sure when I'll see her again. I miss her. Her grandkids miss her. When people question why my family is taking the COVID-19 pandemic so seriously, I tell them about my mom. She does not have a choice to stay home or to avoid exposure to the virus. With her condition, she is high risk and could likely die. If I can help her, and many others like her, stay safe during this pandemic, I will do it. Even if it means a great deal of personal sacrifice. -

One World Together At Home
Probably most of us saw the propaganda on our social media. The event was co-planned by Lady Gaga in conjunction with WHO and Global Citizen Global Citizens Organization. It aims to help unite and inspire medical personnel in this special period, and to increase support in combating the COVID-19 virus epidemic. There are several world-famous celebrities attend this concert, such as Tylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Lizzo, and Celine Dion. Despite those, there are some artists from Asia also involve in this event. The concert will include celebrities’ speech, video recording, and performance. Besides that, every country will share their current situation to the world. Most celebrities use limited resources to do their performance. This is a really amazing moment in a year that everyone is connecting to each other, regardless of where you are. The concert was held remotely, and every celebrity does the performance at home. At this moment, everyone is doing their best to overcome the virus. Most of my friends look forward to this event that shares the moments they love during the concert. I saw some celebrities do the online streaming in their bedroom, with the messy bed as background. Everyone is facing the same situation and have the same goal to make the world back to normal. Together! Stay home!
