My Mom Working in the COVID ICU
While this is not me, it is still important to me since it is my mom. She has worked in the COVID ICU almost the entire time, and I was really affected by seeing her gowned up like that the first time. Her career during my lifetime has not required so much PPE, so it was a really surreal moment that forced me to really appreciate the extremity of the pandemic and how much danger my mom was in. -

Happy Birthday...
Today is April 16th, 2020. Instead of waking my mom up with breakfast in bed, she sends me a photo of herself layered in protective gear. At the time my mother was working at one of the largest hospitals in Queens. She went from working four days a week to working six-seven days a week as the rates of COVID-19 hospitalizations increased. Today is her birthday and instead of celebrating life, she is surrounded by fear, death, and uncertainty. Thank you Mom for being strong and putting your life at risk as an essential worker. Happy Birthday -

Long-term Vaccine Effect Research Project
This article is about the Healthcare Worker Exposure Response and Outcomes (HERO) research project. They are trying to understand the long-term effects of the Covid-19 vaccine. The population that they are using is first-responders, who were among the first group to receive the vaccine in most states. The project plans to conduct periodic surveys over a 2 year period. Since this vaccine was produced in record time, and especially the lack of available data to the long term effects, it is an important project. The project also surveys the first responders regarding their mental health during the pandemic. It includes fire fighters, EMS providers, and law enforcement. -

Healthcare Heroes Work Here
I wanted to contribute a photo because I think healthcare workers are heroes while providing care and support for their patients during the pandemic. I thought it would be easy to find still find a sign just as this but honestly, I did not find many (campaign signs took over many yards and corners). I do not believe this is a reflection of the community because I still think that the community views all healthcare workers as heroes for working on the front line of this virus knowing the dangers they put on themselves and their families. From conversations I have had with healthcare workers they are making sure their patients are receiving the best care and making sure they do not feel alone since they cannot have family by their side. I know the sacrifice they make but they make it so that we can get through this together. -

Connections Newsletter: How a Special Needs Community Weathers the COVID-19 Storm
Given the unique challenges presented by COVID-19, special needs programs, such as Starkey, Inc. in Wichita, Kansas, needed to make equally unique adaptations so as to safeguard an already vulnerable community. This Connections newsletter from the summer of 2020 highlights some of those adaptations from early in the pandemic. These included local food donations to the various residences, the closure of day programs, homemade mask-making drives to make up for the mask shortage, and even visits from wildlife experts from a local zoo, who brought with them a sloth, a lynx, and a penguin for the residents to enjoy. Overall, this source provides a more in-depth look into how a community like Starkey dealt with the virus's early outbreak in ways that had to be uniquely suited to the needs of those they served. -

I am a Hero Now When I Cancel My Dental Appointment
People generally don't enjoy going to the dentist, and from the dentist's point of view, canceled appointments is a big problem. They might charge you for the time, but it's almost always a problem affecting their income and schedule for the day. However, during the Time of Corona, you are acting like a brave and courageous hero by staying home and not going to the dentist. -

Purpose of COVID-19 by Jennifer Shanteau
This virus is an awakening. We saw how much better our planet is for just this short time without our usual insults. I swear the birds sing louder. We are discovering that some of us are very strong- heroes. We started to think, and create, and find ways to change, and move forward positively. We shared food, and masks, and hope. There were sadly also those who haven’t grown, and didn’t want to see the virus, so they looked away, unable to handle it, causing many deaths. These same people want everything to go back to the way it was. The way, if you are paying attention, it can never be again. They are like toddlers without their binky, having tantrums, frightened of moving forward to our inevitable new reality. We will never have an opportunity like this again to really see ourselves. We were forced to look in the mirror. We can’t look away. We have to fix our face. -

Through Chinese Social Media -- 5
I’m a study-abroad student. Due to the virus, I had to stay at my home in New York. I got the update of the virus through Chinese social media, and I think it is really interesting. I’m going to share some posts from Chinese social media about the virus. The post is about that one of the temporary hospitals is going to close, which means the hope is coming. Through the post, I feel the persistence of those front line fighters. There are plenty of touching stories in the post. One of them brings his daughter's doll to the front line. They are also others' wives, husbands, mothers, children. These medical staff came to the frontline at the risk of infection, and their families were also worried, proud, and worried about them from afar. -

Through Chinese Social Media -- 3
I’m a study-abroad student. Due to the virus, I had to stay at my home in New York. I got the update of the virus through Chinese social media, and I think it is really interesting. I’m going to share some posts from Chinese social media about the virus. The post shares the current situation in the front lines. The photos in the post are so touching. Disease, urgency, risk, and death are the themes of twelve hours. People in the front line were trapped behind masks and face masks, breathing hard, causing them to feel severe headaches. Even though, they are still insisting on caring all the patients. -
