Wildfires and COVID
This article from the Associated Press discusses a study done by Nevada-based scientists, that have found a correlation between wildfire smoke and positive COVID cases. The study showed that "for every 10 micrograms per cubic meter of small particulate matter known as PM2.5 in the air, the positivity rate increased about 6.3% two to six days later". The study acknowledges, however, that the uptick in cases may be from other factors, such as a second surge, or students going back to school. Although further studies are required, the study done by the Nevada scientists may suggest that higher pollution levels can make people more prone to viruses. -

At least 5,800 Americans infected despite vaccination; California, Washington open up vaccine eligibility
At least 5,800 people who were vaccinated have contracted COVID-19. Of the 5,800, 400 were hospitalized and 74 died. Since the vaccines are only 90% effective, such infections were expected. The use of the J&J vaccines has been suspended until research into a rare blood-clotting side-effect is complete. -

Statistics
There are 2.16M people who. Died from covid world wide out of 100M cases. Almost everyone knows someone who got it. They got a vaccine now which is good to stop covid. In my state alone there are 38,927 deaths. I hope that the end of covid is near although covid is spiking right now but they say it is just because of the holidays. And it is slowly going down. If the vasine works we should be back to normal after sumer. I am not very scared of getting it because mostly only old or unhealthy people die from it. -

Living in a Hot Spot
I live in a hot spot. I receive texts from my municipal and the Massachusetts government at least once a week. The cases rise daily and the death toll is worrisome. I’m raising my child in a hot spot. I can’t go back to work without the worry that I might bring home a virus that can kill my child. When you get pregnant, there is a lot of anxiety about bringing a life into this world, but no one could have imagined that come 2020, there would be a global pandemic, a virus that we don’t know all the symptoms and a death toll growing daily in our country. I live in a hot spot. I can’t go outside without my mandated mask, social distancing and limited number of people in stores. I cannot see my friends or my distance family. I can’t bring my son to the park or the library, they’re all closed down. I’m being safe. I’m doing my best, but I cannot change that i live in a hot spot. -

Christmas Covid Wave...
After the 2020 Thanksgiving holiday, the United States has begun to consistently break the 1 day infection rate record. Even before the holiday the U.S. was breaking records, but despite this fact many families still held large gatherings. However the Thanksgiving holiday is only unique to the U.S. and as Christmas approaches there could be a global increase in cases if families around the world gather together. -

週刊 グラフで見る新型コロナ(2020年11月6日) - Weekly Graph View New Corona (November 6, 2020)
This video shows the number of cases of COVID-19 in each region of Japan. Tokyo is the capital and the busiest and as you can see, it has the most cases throughout the whole video. We will show you a graph of the transition of people infected with the new coronavirus, which was compiled by TV TOKYO based on the weekly "New Coronavirus Seen in Graph" and the announcements of each local government. First, it is a graph showing the transition of newly infected people every week. The number of infected people continues to decline in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Osaka, and is increasing slightly in some areas. Under such circumstances, the number of infected people has increased significantly in Hokkaido and Aichi prefectures. In Aichi Prefecture, there are many small clusters in the workplace, and Governor Omura has indicated that it is the "de facto third wave." Next is the number of new infections per 100,000 population per week, which also affects the local health care system. Looking at the movements over the past month, we can see that infections are increasing in cold regions such as Aomori, Hokkaido, and Miyagi prefectures. Since the beginning of this week, Hokkaido has increased rapidly, especially in Sapporo, and it has become the largest number in Japan. Michi is considering measures such as requesting shortening of business hours at restaurants that serve Susukino sake. Video is translated by Youngbin Noh -

Thousands of Texas prisoners still have the coronavirus. More than 25% of inmates at four units are infected.
"Two Texas prisons each have more than 670 inmates with active coronavirus infections, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the highest counts seen at any state lockup since the pandemic began." What makes this Covid so scary in a prison is that if caught it can turn a short sentence into a defacto death sentence. For this reason many advocate early release for nonviolent offenders but Texas Governor Greg Abbott does not agree. -

AZ governor's office assures residents its COVID infection rate lower than Brazil or Peru
It's odd that the U.S. response to COVID has been disjointed among national, state, and municipal efforts. Peru had a strong, concerted national effort, but there are so many factors that are contributing to the spiraling infection rate including a day-to-day economy, and the lack of economic support for families. But for officials in Arizona to point the finger and say- hey we're doing better than...seems shameful. Our infection rates could be under control if we followed a systematic public health program. Instead, most businesses are so desperate to reopen like bars and restaurants that they don't really protect customers or staff. The rate of infection among young people started to creep up after Arizona reopened in May, and last week Tempe had to close its bars again to get the situation under control. -

‘Jails Are Petri Dishes’
As the US faced the real threat of the coronavirus it became clear that "jails are petri dishes." Due to overcrowding and the large number of people that go in and out of the buildings daily it is impossible to stop the virus from coming in and spreading rapidly. Government and prison officials began discussing early release or releasing those still awaiting trial, particularly for nonviolent offenses. As with the rest of the nation the fear is that the virus will spread so quickly that the nations medical system will be overwhelmed. The same is true within the prison but the fear is that the inmates and employees of the prisons will add to the medical crises outside the prison. -
