The Digital World and COVID-19
The pandemic caught us all by surprise. At the end of the year 2019, a global event started that none of us were prepared to confront. A new, unknown virus was killing people all over the world, and it was making its way to the United States. As we prepared in whatever way we could, with what we knew at the time, the world started to shut down. Local mandates were advising us all to stay at home and to only leave if we needed to get necessities. With this, we all had to rely on technology to stay connected and to know what was happening in the outside world. We were all connecting through various platforms to work from home, attend classes, or simply to talk to our loved ones. The comfort of doing everything from home turned into a personal prison for many that were not used to being isolated. As the days turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into months, people were anxious and desperate for a sense of normalcy. With technology, we also got information and found resources that would help us navigate through this pandemic, and at the same time, we received misinformation that would eventually turn deadly for many. There was a huge focus by certain political parties to diminish the severity of the virus. In the United States, the conservative population (lead by former President Trump) believed that the virus was not dangerous, and they kept comparing it to a common flu. This conservative population was asking the rest of the population to not believe what the media was informing at the time. This created different perspectives linked to conspiracy theories that spread quickly through different social media platforms. For example: like COVID-19 being a production of the government to control the population, or simply that the virus did not exist at all. At this point, there was a huge part of the population that did not trust the guidance provided by local health authorities. There was information regarding a vaccine that could minimize the damage caused by the virus, and this was great news! Unfortunately, the vaccine encountered the same type of resistance that the previous prevention guidelines encountered. People did not believe in the effectiveness of the vaccine, and again, theories regarding the development of the vaccine started making their way through the internet. For example, some people believe that the vaccine is a chip implanted in our bodies so that the government can track us. In times of uncertainty, those who practice religion tend to turn to religion for comfort and guidance. In some cases, certain religious groups were advising their congregations to put all their trust in God, and that he would protect them from the virus, without the need of a vaccine. The clash of religion and science made it more difficult for the population to come out victorious from a very challenging time. More than 2 years later, and we are still seeing the effects of the pandemic in society. There is an emotional divide that lingers in our communities, not just a physical distance. Communities want to have their normal lives back but fail to realize that these are their normal lives now. -

Jerry Gryglak 'humbled' to receive Governor's Citizenship Medal for daily Reddit COVID updates
This is a news story from The Denver Gazette by Lindsey Toomer. Since June 2020, Jerry Gryglak has posted COVID updates on the subreddit r/CoronavirusColorado, and breaking down the information to be more user-friendly. This has helped Redditors get better information on the virus. Due to his diligence, Governor Jared Polis is recognizing Gryglak as one of Colorado's COVID Heroes and will get the Governor's Citizenship Medal. Gryglak left posts on Reddit with updates on deaths, hospitalizations, vaccines, and other such information. Gryglak is unsure how much longer he will be posting these updates. -

Sounding the Alarm
Virtual town halls educate and empower the black community during the pandemic "In March, we began distributing food, water and face masks to unhoused people in South Sacramento and Oak Park in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. We did this as members of the Sacramento Area Black Caucus, the Sacramento Poor People’s Campaign and the Sacramento Services Not Sweeps Coalition. All three groups are focusing our collective advocacy efforts on the pandemic and how it is impacting people experiencing homelessness in our community. What we encountered alarmed us. We saw that many of the homeless were not wearing face masks and weren’t observing social distancing. They didn’t seem to understand the danger, which was even more disturbing. When we asked, they usually replied that they didn’t have a mask or couldn’t find one." -

Meme
I found this to be an interesting example of how people have used humor to cope with quarantine and the pandemic, and actually ironically reflects how a lot of information has spread. While relying on social media for reliable news is not typically advised, it can be less overwhelming than professional media and reflects the day-to-day perspective more accurately. -

COVID-19 variants
This is an article about the variants of COVID-19 that are either present or emerging in the United States. It is meant to keep EMS providers informed with up-to-date information so that they can provide the best care to patients. Some of the variants are more dangerous/have more symptoms than others. It notes that there is 5 variants of concern, which have increased transmissibility and increased hospitalizations/deaths. While this is not great news, it is a good thing that there are currently no variants in the world that are considered variants of high consequence by the CDC, which essentially means that medicine does not have effective means of treating it. Hopefully this remains the case and we can start to see a drop off of the variants of concern soon. -

Covid-19 Origin
I was watching the news and in the broadcast, I first learned the cause of the virus. The cause was from bats. I thought this was a little odd since I thought only insects could spread a virus. My opinions/knowledge has changed since I learned that any animal could spread a virus. Now that I know the true cause of the virus, I am more informed and I can tell people who are uneducated on the cause of the virus, the real cause of it. -

COVID-19 data diggers — and doubters — call for clearer picture in B.C.
There's a growing push for B.C. to collect and share more detailed data about COVID-19 positive hotspots. Last week, hundreds of parents called on the provincial health officer to divulge more data so that people can make informed decisions as a new wave of infections hits the province. This week, epidemiologists, data analysts and former federal health minister and Toronto doctor Jane Philpott called for "radical transparency" around Canadian COVID data. -

Halloween During A Pandemic
This is a pamphlet that my town had posted around while nearing Halloween, one of the biggest national holidays that inspire people to be outside and gather on the streets. The pamphlet is a fun way to get people informed about the current status of the pandemic and ways people can partake in Halloween without having to worry too much about the pandemic. Providing people with the knowledge of what to do to if they are interested in trick-or-treating, welcoming trick-or-treaters, or trying to stay safe and prevent them from coming to their homes. Due to rising rates in COVID-19 again, it is most important to be mindful of the pandemic and your fellow neighbors. Since a lot of people are usually on the streets for Halloween and kids would be running around, it is important to stay safe and the pamphlet is a quick, easy, and accessible for people to stay knowledgeable. Luckily, the pamphlet is perfect to hang up around town or for people to have on their fridges as a reminder of what to do. -

Reduced level of police services
Early on during the pandemic; I had a need to visit my old police department, Santa Barbara Police Department, in order to conduct my annual weapon qualification for my concealed weapon permit as a retiree. I was dismayed to find the police station shut to the walk in public. In addition, I learned that police officers were only responding to crimes in progress and emergencies of different kinds. All other contact had to be conducted over the phone. Such a reduced level of service has to have ramifications currently and down the road. Loss of personal contact between the citizen and officers will result in loss of information where as personal contacts often lead to obtaining unexpected criminal information. It’s a loss of opportunity to build trusting relationships. When little issues are not addressed by the presence of an officer; those little issues can grow to become significant problems. When officers are not dispatched to calls for service; citizens may decide not to call in the future. It’s well know that consensual contacts regarding minor issues often lead to felony crimes and arrests. So to some extent COVID-19 not only has a medical consequence it also has a public safety consequence. -

Coronavirus in the U.S.: Where cases are growing and declining
This article was published by National Geographic and made public by them to help spread awareness of the current state of the Coronavirus epidemic. This article is important because often information is gained second or third hand from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone else and by the time the information gets to you, the actual info is lost. National Geographic has long been known as a reputable source of information and so the information from them can usually be counted on to be accurate. Having an accurate source of information can help ease anxiety people may have simply from 'not knowing.' This article stated that, in the US, cases have been steady but with the cooler temperatures coming, may rise again as more people are spending their time primarily indoors. This article serves as a good snapshot of the current state of things in the coronavirus universe in September 2020. -

Zoom Fatigue
With the pandemic came online learning and being forced into a class room situation where everything was mediated through our screens. I found this learning style to be mentally draining and had felt that I was alone in my experience when all I saw online was people celebrating the wonders of connecting through zoom. Seeing this infographic which acknowledges zoom exhaustion and breaks down why it happens and ways to overcome it was really nice. It shows that my experience is felt by many and while technology has allowed many of us to stay connected it isn't with negatives. HUM402 -

Greenville, SC Chicken processing plant demonstrates failures of US infrastructure
Two screenshots telling a story about the House of Raeford chicken processing plant less than a mile from my home and a larger story about the failure of the US infrastructure at this time. About 2 weeks ago we began to hear rumors that the meat supply was likely to be affected by the pandemic, workers were becoming sick in huge numbers and the processing plants were closing down. At the same time many of them were currently overloaded with products that they could not sell to restaurants and schools. 10 days ago the processing plant down the road held a huge sale on their overstock meat. Several thousand people lined up in their cars for miles down the road. They hung out in the parking lots of other businesses and moved in and out of them while waiting in the line. Very few people were masked ; none of the plant employees were masked. A few days after the sale President Trump declared meat packing plants essential for the economy and required them to stay open tho he provided no funds for PPE for workers nor any real guidelines on how to keep them safe. 7 days after the huge sale at the House of Raeford plant they reported positive cases amongst their workers. They refuse to say how many people are infected out of privacy concerns. At every step of the way the people involved should have been able to trust the government to keep us safe and we have not been able to. We should have been able to trust in our food supply or at least in the information we received about it so we didn't feel the need to panic buy food. The workers should have been protected from the start and definitely after they were ordered to work. We should be able to know what information to trust to make informed decisions regarding our lives and the lives of our fellow citizens. The US government is spectacularly failing to provide the least feeling of stability at this time. -

Kimberley Bulletin: Covid-19 (Coronavirus) Responses
A regular Covid-19 bulletin issued to local indigenous community members and health providers describing hygiene practices, local travel and safe distancing restrictions, background information on covid-19 and available social support using terminology and cultural examples specific to the region. For example, a 'sorry camp' is special area where visiting relatives would stay when attending a funeral in a community, as communities can be extremely far apart. These are subject to the country-wide limit of a maximum 10 people at funerals current at the time of publication. Remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities are considered to be at higher risk of severe impacts from Covid-19 than the wider population due to their higher level of chronic health issues, frequently crowded households, and long distance from healthcare. The Kimberley region of Western Australia has unique travel restrictions in place to limit movement between the four Shires, in addition to restrictions on movement across different regions of Western Australia and lockdowns of individual indigenous communities. -

Australian Government Isolation Guidance
Australian Government fact sheet with guidance on self-isolation, Version 14 Isolation guidance If you have returned to Australia from overseas, or been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus, special restrictions apply. Who needs to isolate? All people who arrive in Australia, or think they may have been in close contact with a person diagnosed with coronavirus, are required to self-isolate for 14 days. Stay at home or in your hotel When travelling home or to your hotel to start isolation use personal transport, such as a car, to minimise exposure to others. If you need to use public transport (e.g. taxis, ride-hail services, trains, buses and trams), reduce the spread of germs through good hand hygiene and avoiding physical contact. During the 14 days of isolation, you must stay at home or in your hotel and don’t go to public places including work, school, childcare, university or public gatherings. Only people who usually live with you should be in the home. Do not see visitors. If you are in a hotel, avoid contact with other guests or staff. If you are well, there is no need to wear surgical masks at home. Ask others who are not in isolation to get food and necessities for you. If you must leave home, such as to seek medical care, wear a surgical mask. If you don’t have a mask, take care to not cough or sneeze on others. Monitor symptoms When in isolation, monitor yourself for symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness or shortness of breath. Other possible symptoms include chills, body aches, runny nose and muscle pain. What do I do if I get sick? If you develop symptoms (fever, a cough, sore throat, tiredness or shortness of breath) within 14 days of returning to Australia, or within 14 days of last contact of a confirmed case, you should arrange to see a doctor for urgent assessment. You should telephone the health clinic or hospital before you arrive and tell them your travel history or that you have been in contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus. You must remain isolated either in your home, hotel or a healthcare setting until public health authorities inform you it is safe for you to return to your usual activities. How can I prevent the spread of coronavirus? Practising good hand and sneeze/cough hygiene and keeping your distance from others when you are sick is the best defence against most viruses. You should: • wash your hands frequently with soap and water, including before and after eating, and after going to the toilet • cover your cough and sneeze, dispose of tissues, and wash your hands • avoid contact with others (stay more than 1.5 metres from people) • stay at home if unwell. Going outside If you live in a private house, it is safe for you to go into your garden or courtyard. If you live in an apartment or are staying in a hotel, it is also safe for you to go into the garden but you should wear a surgical mask to minimise risk to others and move quickly through any common areas. Advice for others living with you Others that live with you are not required to be isolated unless they meet one of the isolation criteria outlined above. If you develop symptoms and are confirmed to have coronavirus, they will be classified as close contacts and will need to be isolated. Cleaning To minimise the spread of any germs you should regularly clean surfaces that are frequently touched such as door handles, light switches, kitchen and bathroom areas. Clean with household detergent or disinfectant. Managing the 14 day isolation Being in isolation can be stressful and boring. Suggestions include: • Keep in touch with family members and friends via telephone, email or social media. • Learn about coronavirus and talk with others. • Reassure young children using age-appropriate language. • Where possible, keep up normal daily routines, such as eating and exercise. • Arrange to work from home. • Ask your child’s school to supply assignments or homework by post or email. • Do things that help you relax and use isolation as an opportunity to do activities you don’t usually have time for. More information For the latest advice, information and resources, go to www.health.gov.au Call the National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
