New guidelines for face masks in Japan
Japan, as of May 30th, 2022, is relaxing the face mask guidelines. For the most part, masks do not need to be worn outdoors except when the elderly are in close quarters to other people. Indoors, masks are still required indoors except in the case of when someone is in little to no conversation, which the article shows in a chart. The chart's example states walking around museums and libraries where there is little to no conversation. One of the reasons for why Japan is relaxing face masks is because summer is approaching and the temperature will rise. There are fears about face masks causing heatstroke. In Japan, temperatures can range from 70-90 degrees F, but the summers are hot and humid too. So, it makes sense to relax the restrictions, especially in the outdoors. -

COVID and My Mental State
I've never really felt like this before COVID, maybe at times but not as frequent. COVID has been a whole different experiences for me in many ways. I've never really felt so helpless even until now. Having nothing to do or being stuck at home, it took a toll on me. Many of the things I had a passion for or loved doing has made me lose motivation. I have been also slacking on my studies. COVID has also made me realized that I have no friends or personal relations outside of my family. Not going outside as also made me get terrible anxiety and talking to people has been difficult. But I have been working on it as of recently and working on myself little by little every day. -

Covid journal
I have to wear a mask everyday, I have to social distance and I have to wash my hands. I think that it is very annoying to wear a mask but you get used to it. We are not able to go places a lot and you have to stay inside for most of your day. I really don't like having to keep of with my mask all of the time because I lose it a lot. -

Sensory history and the pandemic
I've been thinking about sensory history and how often it's left out of historical records. We often don't stop to comment on observations we make every day like noise of a busy street corner or the smell of muffins baking in the kitchen. I'm teaching HST643 Global history during Fall B with a module on sensory history. I'd like to ask students to add a perspective on the sensory history of the pandemic. I posted this thought in the JOTPY Slack workspace and Shanna replied with a really interesting observation about sound: “…there is an odd tension of noise inside my home and silence the second I step outside. I find myself needing a quiet space when I’m in my house. Yet the second I walk outside, it’s way too quiet that I start to feel uncomfortably lonely and in need of human connection.” -

My day inside
I find time is hard to past by these days. My sleep schedule has changed drastically ever since we were given stay at home orders. I usually start my day at around 10 am and then end it by 3 am. The time in between is quite monotonous and I am really looking forward to the orders being lifted. So my day starts and I grab something to eat. I then login to my live lectures which are all day. I listen, or at least try to, take notes, and then do some homework. Often now I have to re watch lectures to understand the material since when I watch it live I am not really paying attention. I then study and get ready for the day. I try my best to remain in contact with my friends but it is not the same anymore. The only interaction I usually have is getting help on an assignment or us figuring out how to complete a task that we have been assigned. Once my classes are done I usually eat again and then try and exercise. Normally when I am on campus I am able to get a lot of walking done, but now since we are inside, I need to be active. So after I decide to exercise , I unwind a bit and then have dinner. Everyday I have to make something since I do not want to get food from outside. Cooking has been the one part that is different, since I try to make something new every day. I then eat and study some more. I find myself productive for whatever reason that may be. Usually I have to really try and focus to get work done because it is really distracting being at home. Something about being at home just does not make me feel like working. Nevertheless, I am able to study and continue to catch up on the material. This routine is quite monotonous at this point. It has been roughly 8 weeks like this and it is starting to get tiring. I know change to the stay at home orders is coming, and I can not wait for it. I am thankful that my semester ends soon so that way there will be some change to my routine. 8 weeks of the same thing every day is quite a drag on life and I look forward to the changes. I really hope the Fall wont have a second wave leading to life like this again! -

Experiencing the outide from inside
The idea was to show my attempt at bringing some of the things I missed from the outside world to the inside of my house. It is meant to be ironic and sort of comedic as it is obviosly kind of impossible for me to bring the beach or to go on a walk around the city inside of my house but it shows the reality of the right now. It was an assignment from my class at Parsons, PUFY 1001, A09 with Professor Jensen
