2022-06-11US will end Covid-19 testing requirement for air travelers entering the country
This is a news story from CNN by Kaitlan Collins. The CDC is expected to lift the requirement for air travelers to test negative for COVID before entering the US. The travel industry has been lobbying the CDC for months regarding this issue after it was no longer determined that the restrictions are no longer "based on the science and data." However, just because it is getting lifted now, the CDC does have the power to reinstate this restriction if a new variant develops and causes concern. -

Professor Damir Kovacevic was born in Bosnia before coming to the United States. He has lived across the midwest but currently lives in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Damir works as an assistant professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a focus on international relations. In this interview, Damir Kovacevic discusses how the pandemic has affected his life, profession, and emotions. Damir provides insight into how the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has handled the pandemic with testing and closing the college for the remainder of the Fall 2020 semester. Damir also touches on how Eau Claire, the state of Wisconsin, the United States, and foreign countries on the international scale handled the pandemic. He discusses how teaching as a career has changed and adapted to the pandemic. He discusses topics such as the media and misinformation when it comes to healthcare and the virus, but also the general decay in trust. -

2021-08-02A complex decision: Deferring International Students
In the Center of International Programs, during Summer 2021, some decisions had to be made in the office. Due to internal changes, some applications could not be processed, and I-20s could not be developed. Between 10 to 20 undergraduates and graduate students had to be deferred to have more time to issue their visas. This impacted students as some had already made arrangements to come and each case had to be taken into consideration and also be taken personally. The Center of International Programs has over 20 students preparing to go to the university by Spring 2022. -
2021-08-09New Beginnings - First in-person International Student Orientation During COVID-19
On August 9th, 45 students (approx.) came to the first international student orientation. During the session, they explained how to maintain the visa status, more information about working in the university, and health recommendations and guidelines. They were also asked to leave their documentation for the following scanning and complete some forms during the session. This session was the first one after COVID-19 appeared in the US. -

2021-01-24No Hands Across the Water: The Cancellation of Plans for International Travel
I was planning to go to London this year to present at an international conference of librarians and connect with librarians from all over the world. This conference is only held every three years, and it is an important forum to share thoughts, present ideas and projects, network and build international collaborations, and plan joint projects. Doing so through email and Zoom is a poor substitute for this type of one-on-one conference. I travel internationally frequently, and I was planning to fit in a trip to Ireland before the conference, to visit with the land of my ancestors. I’ve been involved in a genealogy project along with some of my relatives, and my trip to Ireland would have given me the opportunity to do some family research. When I travel, I travel very close to the ground: staying in small B&Bs or hotels, dining in local establishments, traveling by bus or rail, and really trying to fit into the community rather than be a tourist to the extent possible. International travel is so important for this divisive world these days to foster understanding and cooperation both personally and professionally. So the cancellation of my trip meant not only the loss of some fun times but also speaks to a greater loss. -

A one panel comic in which several scientists in lab coats stand around a lab bench with the usual equipment. One, who is facing the rest of the group is pointing to a man sitting at a computer desk typing away while wearing a hoodie, sunglasses, and large earphones, the usual monikers of a hacker. The scientist pointing is saying "Yuri here will head up our Covid 'research' while the rest of you can continue your work on athletic doping and poisoning enemies of the state." This is a reference to the news, this week, from Canada, the US, and UK, that all have discovered a prominent hacker group associated with the Russian government attempting to hack their covid-19 and covid-19 vaccine research at various institutions. The response to the Russian government was that they are conducting their own research and are "close" to developing a vaccine of their own. This alleged imminent breakthrough is something of which many in Canada and other countries, including the creator of this comic (it would seem) are skeptical. -
2020-07-14Northeastern responds to ICE reversal on international student rule
ICE last week instituted a rule that said if international students took all online classes, they couldn't stay in America on a visa. Schools in Boston, including Harvard and MIT filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security. Northeastern joined the lawsuit, and on July 14, ICE rescinded the rule, allowing students to stay in the US and continue their education, even if all of their classes are online because of the pandemic. It's not safe to gather in large groups yet, especially indoors, and schools are starting to release fall plans mainly online. -

MIT and Harvard filed a civil action lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security against recent rules that would bar international students from legally remaining in the US if they take classes entirely online this fall. Thousands of students would lose scholarships, their inability to research, and their student status if the government decided to follow-through. These Boston universities are seeking a way to prohibit this ruling. -
