  Landlording During the Pandemic

  This article discusses how despite initial assumptions that landlords may have been harmed during the Coronavirus they have actually been seeing large profits. Understanding that landlords are still earning money and turning a profit. This idea is in direct violation of the narrative that these eviction moratoriums are harmful to landlords. I wanted to include this article because I think to understand homelessness you also have to understand property ownership and landlording. I'll use the article to provide examples about how the homelessness experienced during the pandemic was preventable and how the pandemic has been kinder to landlords than to homeless people.

  The government and opposition party voted down a motion brought forward by the New Democratic Party (NDP) on Dec. 9 that proposed a six-month freeze on rent increases to help renters during the pandemic. The NDP had asked the legislature to pass a ministerial order under the Civil Emergency Measures Act to prevent rent-increases until July 1, 2021.

  This article covers what is happening in the fine dining industry during Covid-19. All restaurants are dealing with the pandemic and the loss of revenue. Many fine dining restaurants are closing because the cost margins are so narrow and for these restaurants to stay in business they need a full house.   Students in Suffolk Law's 12 legal clinics are still representing clients even though courts in Massachusetts are closed for all but emergency cases. That means student attorneys are still busy at work--whether asking the court to issue a restraining order or helping to ensure that landlords are not resorting to illegal lockouts.

  Goodbye Basketball

  This image was taken in Champaign Illinois at a student housing facility for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In the image you see basketball rims without the hoops on them. Since the COVID-19 pandemic and orders to social distance, landlords have been shutting down common spaces as well as taking hoops off the basketball rims.
