Our Six-Week, COVID-19 Baking Crisis
My wife and I were both home from our jobs by mid-March because the COVID-19 pandemic had, for all effective purposes, practically shut down our home state of Alabama. During our long sequestration from the world, we often baked together to pass the time. Tamsie has a sourdough bread starter that was handed down from her grandmother, so to keep the starter “alive”, she has to bake bread every month or so, which of course requires yeast. I believe that millions of Americans were at home baking during that time because we were out of dry yeast for her bread and, though we searched every grocery within a 20-mile radius of our home, we looked to no avail; additionally, yeast was back-ordered on Amazon, Walmart online, and every other online store. We were beyond desperate for that yeast, and the starter had to be near death when, at long last, I discovered an in-stock yeast on Amazon and ordered six pounds of it. Needless to say, I ordered entirely too much and thus unintentionally became that obligatory hoarder with which we’ve all had to deal during the last seven months. Thus, we had to bake dozens of loaves of sourdough bread to use that yeast! My wife is a dentist, so we baked bread for all her employees and left it on both their front porches and garages. We also baked for our neighbors and our families. The sweet smells of sourdough bread and sticky buns filled our home for nearly six weeks, as baking became an inane, daily ritual in the Rogers household! Today, whenever I smell fresh bread or cinnamon rolls, I think of our time spent together with our puppies in the kitchen, laboriously prepping, waiting for the yeast to rise, baking, and cleaning on a daily basis. I am thankful for this time, and though we now laugh about and much fun is had at my expense over my overzealous yeast spending-spree, whenever I smell fresh bread, I will forever be transported to our happy kitchen along with its aromatic sights and smells during the early weeks of the pandemic. It is truly amazing to ponder what we take for granted in our daily walks, and though I am obviously glad we are standing on firmer ground than in spring in relation to COVID-19, I miss our time together in the kitchen, which seems lonely and destitute without the sweet aroma of fresh sourdough bread. My association with this simple, yet happy memory during the pandemic is reflective of the joys we should be seeking in small things. Our daily lives are measured by our relationships, our serenity and contentment, and the joy we both provide and glean from others. The extended time at home with Tamsie allowed us a “factory reset” of sorts in our lives, one that brought our already-happy marriage much closer together; consequently, we no longer take life’s simple, quiet moments for granted. In some ways, the lasting human effects of the pandemic on relationships have been positive, in that each of us has had ample time to again focus on those whom we love. -

Life Changes on a Dime
Here we all are stuck having our wings cut for just a LITTLE while. Children are so special. I am always in my room because, of age, health and so on... I have grandchildren that seem to keep multiplying all the time. One of my babies come to my door every other day always happy and full of wonder. Last week he came to my door crying I asked him what was wrong worried at first he had heard something and got scared. No it was simple to me but is was tearing his little heart up. His name is Jr. hes 2.5 years old an has a heart so big. I asked him what are you crying about. His reply was, "I cant sit on your lap and give you a hug." it was what he always did when he wanted something his dad or mom would not let him have. I said back to him you can throw me kiss the you can say it real low so only I can hear. he threw me a kiss and said Grandma would you get me pictures to color I don't have any more and daddy says we cant go to store. I asked him who do you want to color he said stitch, i told him to come back in a few minutes and i would see what could be done. So I got right to printing out pictures off the net of all his favorite cartoons he liked. When he came back I had placed the pictures at my door. He sat down and showed me that picture and said it was his best most one of all. Asked him why he said it has hearts on it. I made my day great to be able to make him happy. Even if we can not be hugging I got to watch him color a couple of the pages. As he left he said Please hurry and get well Granma you have a lot of hugs, cookies for me?and blew me kisses. -

A Love Story Made Possible by Covid-19
Right as Covid-19 had seriously begun to hit the world in March of 2020 and was deemed a global pandemic, I had my heart broken by my boyfriend of a year and a half. I was not able to recover from the relationship like most people typically would by going out with friends and partying because of the lockdown. I was left all by myself. With no siblings, no friends in my area and a very small family, I had to find other ways in which to communicate with others so that I wouldn't lose my mind. In July of 2020, I joined Bumble and decided to get back in the dating game, that's when I met Jacob. Jacob and I matched because he was on vacation in Florida, however, we matched and began talking on the day that he was flying back to his home in Houston, Texas. We kept in contact though and were presented with our first Covid-related blessing: cheap plane tickets. As college students who are unable to afford most things, when we found out that a roundtrip from Houston to Florida only cost $58 we jumped on that opportunity. Jacob flew out to Florida so he could take me on our first official date, which went amazing. We continued talking when school started and that is when we realized we were presented with another Covid-19 related opportunity. Since all of my classes were online and airplane tickets were still cheap, I was able to fly out to Texas for a week and be with him. Although Covid-19 is a terrible and deadly disease, it has allowed me to find somebody that I can call my own, because without the pandemic we would not be able to afford to see each other nearly as regularly and my school schedule would not allow me to leave the state at random to be with him. love, oppurtunity, bumble app, happy, unexpected -

Fur Friend to the Rescue
2020 has not been the best year... for anyone probably. Wildfires, pandemic, riots, protests, poor economy, all things that bring stress to people. People handle and deal with stress in different ways; some turn to their pets. Your pet doesn't know anything about what's going on with the world, they just know you are their human and they love you. They are always willing and excited to give you a cuddle and be near you. Every day you come home, they are super excited to see you, and sometimes, that can make a terrible day so much better. This is a photo of Maya the Papaya, aka Jellybean! She is my moms dog and is the super cuddly-est dog and is always so. super. excited. to be near you! -

Covid Bridal Party Gets Creative
A friend of mine had to postpone her wedding after almost a year of hard work and planning. The couple had announced that they would wait to have the wedding of their dreams until it was safe to do so. This week her sister uploaded a surprise bridal shower she hosted in her tiny bedroom for her sister and bridal party. I wanted to show how people are still living during Covid, people are still celebrating, and love is still winning. I thought it important to shed some light amidst all the negativity and darkness that Covid has brought. I thought it was the sweetest gesture to let this bride feel important and acknowledging this big event in her life. A few days after this bridal shower, this bride went down to the courthouse and married her best friend. They are still planning to have a big celebration next year. -

"Hope"
This mural caught my eye because it represents hope and love during a time of distress. I think we forget that love and hope is what we need as a global community. We are all going through this and we get caught up in the derision and life. As the artist said that he wanted to "provoke hope" of life after lockdown. "And also to show the tightrope between fear and love that many of us are walking at the moment." -

Coronavirus Kindness: Bay Area Artists Create Murals on Boarded Storefronts to Uplift Local Communities
Businesses across the San Francisco Bay Area have closed, some temporary and some permanently, as a result of California's COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders. Those that hope to re-open have boarded up their windows to try to protect their stores and inventory. As a result of the crushing economic blow of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vibrancy of San Francisco streets has vanished. In response, local arts are turning boarded storefronts into beautiful murals with messages of hope. Local artists are "bringing life and beauty to our streets, sending messages of love to people in their community." Two local art agencies, Building 180 and Art for Civil Discourse, have teamed up and created Paint the Void. Paint the Void pairs local artists with boarded up businesses in an attempt to beautify the city and "to bring hope into the community and inspire people." Artists hope to eventually auction their murals and donate the funds raised to those in need. -

COVID Share Your Story #RITtigers #14, Physics Major's Point of view
Once we were directed to leave RIT, I was overwhelmed. Things felt so uncertain and hopeless, I was seriously considering dropping out. But after the outpouring of support from all corners of RIT, and especially the academic provost's decision to offer pass/fail options, I truly felt that things would be okay. The situation is manageable and RIT is here for us. There is so much love within our community, and I'm trying to help spread it wherever and whenever possible. Even though we're physically distant, I feel closer than ever to my family and friends. Everyone is checking in on one another and actively trying to make the day brighter. For instance, I've reconnected with many friends from high school in the form of meme-sharing and messages of support. I've even become closer to my younger sister by recording music together. We have seen examples of the world as a beautiful, interconnected community. Let's keep it going. Spread the love <3 If I could give a message to myself at the start of this semester, what would I say? Keep your room clean, keep your chin up, keep your friends close, it's all going to be okay. -

Social distancing celebration birthday
I saw some videos on YouTube. A heartwarming new way of celebrating birthdays that self-isolation wasn’t going to stop the kids from feeling the love. Covid as a collage
I wanted to make something that was colorful and cheerful to remind people of the good things that are still happening in the world and that it is okay to find a light even in the darkest of times. None of this is to take away from the grim situation we are facing on a global level. It is hard to ignore the lack of medical supplies, the millions of people who have lost their jobs and that the economy is at a historical low point. I want to continue to help in any way I can, focus on the positive and hope that we as a nation can come together and beat this pandemic. -

The Driveway Project -Life in Lock down Photo series by Sandy Scheltema
The Driveway Project - Life in Lockdown , aims to document life during these unprecedented times of social distancing due to the Corona Virus. It is a way to document history in Trentham and surrounds during this time of staying at home, and a way of helping families feel connected with others in the community. Photography can capture history by recording our changed circumstances during these difficult times. The project is photographing families who are in lockdown and working, studying, and doing remote schooling at home. Participants are asked to come out in their driveway as a family unit with items that represent what they have been doing in lockdown, and the photographer is documenting them outside their residence. -

Our long distance relationship made even more distant with the pandemic
The pandemic has made long-distance relationships even more difficult to maintain -- for lack of a better word. I'm sure a lot of other people in long-distance relationships will be able to [relate to] me and my S.O.'s story. I want these people to know that they are not alone in their struggle of longing for their loved ones; and that even if things seem very bleak right now, sometimes, the only thing we can do to feel better is to hope. -

A pandemic love story
I was only a month into dating a British guy here in Australia on a working holiday visa when the pandemic started affecting countries outside of China. The battle that China was facing at the time seemed far, far away, as if it could never reach us all the way here in Australia. For a lot of young people like myself, we continued our daily lives, a little anxious, alert but otherwise content with our circumstances. So far, we were free. At university, a friend once proclaimed, ‘it’s okay, even if we were to get it, for young people, it’s just like the common cold, which is another form of coronavirus anyway.’ Things progressed extremely fast of course. From announcement of the first identified case in Australia, it was a matter of people frantically tuning in to the news every single day and night, talking with neighbours and phoning relatives overseas as we eagerly awaited the next steps of prime minister Scott Morrison. At first, Australia was hesitant to respond, with Morrison and health officials calmly addressing the nation on news. But surely, as the number of cases in Australia grew from 1 to 30 to 150 by March 19, the borders shut, shops closed and we became housebound. Stage 1 restrictions had begun. It’s hard to believe that since then, I’ve completed an entire semester, 9 weeks of university, online. Just a few days before these restrictions began on March 19-20, my boyfriend and I, having only been dating 1 month, went through a rough patch causing me to break off the relationship. Then, once lockdown began, his workplace closed and he realised he had insufficient savings to last more than a month of rent and expenses in Melbourne. Being a UK citizen, he was also not entitled to the stream of government financial benefits that had recently initiated. He didn’t even have Medicare so if he were to suddenly fall ill, he wouldn't be able to afford basic medical care. After pouring his heart out to me about all this, I knew that the best thing for him was to fly back to the UK. In my mind, we were over and there was no reason for him to stay and suffer in Australia. However, stubbornly and against my advice, he insisted on staying if I gave him another chance because he wanted to resolve our issues and continue the relationship. He wanted to show me that he’s not the type of guy to leave when things get tough (bit dramatic, yes). He also knew that if he left, he wouldn’t be able to return to Australia, because of his type of visa. For him, there was literally no advantage in staying: no work, no savings, no family. All he had was me, and the prospect of our relationship. For whatever reason, he decided that that was worth fighting for, amid a global pandemic and financial hardship. After many long conversations back and forth, he convinced me that it was indeed possible for him to stay because he was willing to do whatever it took, even borrowing money from family, an idea that normally revolts him. Meanwhile, I realised I didn't want to give up on our relationship. I wanted him beside me, especially during this uncertainty. I knew that a guy willing to stay in a country for you, is a guy you only meet once in a lifetime. So, I gave him another chance and we fought to get through. For 2 months, this is what our lives looked like: - Him, cooped up in his apartment with his flatmates, playing videogames, applying for jobs here and there, checking for updates and praying that the government would offer any help to temporary visa holders - Me, cooped up in my suburban home, watching online lectures, bonding with my family, exercising, baking - Me, buying him food and groceries when I could - Us, Facetiming, every night, making each other laugh, planning all the things we’d do when restrictions lifted and addressing uncomfortable topics with a pandemic sense of urgency - Us, meeting up twice a week, spending the entire day together just driving around in my car, taking away food and coffee, feeding off each other’s presence in this lonely time - Us, without the hussle and bustle of ‘normal’ life, getting to know each other deeply and authentically. You can’t hide behind your work mask or your social mask during lockdown. Where we are now, 4 months later. We are going strong. Our issues are past us, and he has been nothing but amazing and supportive. He managed to find work again and received a rent grant. Financially, he has survived. Restrictions in Australia have lifted, restaurants are open for dine-in, sports matches are re-opening and groups of up to 20 can now gather in a home. Things are finally looking up. He is hoping to find farm work soon, which everyone on a working holiday visa must do in order to stay a second year. This whole experience has been surreal. This isn’t the first time the world has witnessed a pandemic but it’s certainly the first time entire countries have gone into lockdown. At the age of 22, I never thought my relationship would develop alongside a pandemic. I’m so grateful I’ve had someone to share this experience with. More importantly, I’ve learned that when an amazing thing or person comes into your life, to hold on and fight for it because at the end of the day, all we have is our health, and our love for people. -

This is a photograph of a lay out for a bride getting married on July 4, 2020. She began her wedding process with approximately 250 guest and a wedding party of 6 not counting herself and the groom. She is now down to 50 guest, and a wedding party of 3, not counting herself or the groom. She had us move the chairs to a circular pattern around her rather than looking into a void of empty space by leaving them in an aisle. This is a representation of how much COVID-19 has altered plans made by individuals and the thought process that must be applied to rectify them and have some semblance of happiness. -

Love in the Time of COVID: Cheers to 10 Years!
June 5, 2020 marked our 10 year wedding anniversary. Due to the uncertainty of things, we had no plans to celebrate. Literally none. Our extended family, however, could not let this moment go uncelebrated. We live on the same property as my mother and father-in-law, as well as my sister-in-law and her 3 girls. They decided to surprise us with a dinner for two at "Cafe de Gagnon." They sent us an invitation asking us to dress our best and to knock on the door of my in-laws promptly at 5:30 p.m. Upon arrival, our 3 children greeted us, dressed to the nines, with warm smiles. They proceeded to serve us a multiple course dinner, prepared by my father-in-law. While it wasn't what we had imagined for our 10-year wedding anniversary, it was absolutely perfect. And a great reminder that true joy is possible during these challenging times. -

Quarantine Birthday
Today my baby sister Elena turned five years old. She has just been a light and a breath of fresh air ever since she has entered this world. I have loved watching her grow up and learn new things. She may be trying at times, but things always seem to pan out perfectly. I love her so much. I pray that God protect her and watch over her all the days of her life. Please guide her and help her grow in her faith in you, Lord. We had so many fun surprises in Elena’s birthday celebrations. I made her breakfast, waffles with chocolate shaped in a cute animal with blueberries for its eyes and mouth and a blackberry for the nose. Then we dropped her off at preschool with cupcakes. Then, once she came home, we ate lunch. After that we took photos in our homemade photobooth. Then we played Pin-the-Moustache-on-the-Kitty. Elena won of course. Since she won, we gave Elena cake as a surprise for her win. After that we did the pinata. Lastly, we had presents. Today was a good day. #LSMS #NSD -

Prepping for a Quarantine Birthday
My sister has been jumping for joy this entire day because tomorrow is her birthday. She is turning five. She is so young and excited for this one day of the year. Her excitement has rubbed off on me and brought me some joy during this quarantine. I am sad though that her birthday cannot be as good as it could be because of the coronavirus. She has never experienced a party with her friends. I am motivated in spite of everything to do everything in my power to make her birthday special. I planned everything, made a pinata, went to buy decorations and a cake, and am going to cook her breakfast and doughnuts. I know it is a lot, but I really believe that God will give me the strength to bear it and make Elena’s 5th birthday amazing. I know it will take a lot of work and it won’t be easy, but I am ready and excited to take on the challenge. I also need to in this time do my school for the day. I won’t say I’m stressed because this is just a small party among our family to make Elena happy on her special day. I hope everything goes well. #LSMS #NSD -

Daily letters to Vincent in the Nursing Home
when I could not visit my husband in the nursing home for 1/2 hour each day, I decided to write him a one page letter each day with my thoughts or doings. This is because he cannot pick up a phone on his own nor could he hear my voice register if we did talk on the phone. At first I delivered these letters, then the nursing home determined they had to let the germs evaporate for 48 hours. So now I send them though USPS and they probably still hold them for 48 hours before he gets them. -

Moore suggested to take away from this pandemic how to love your neighbours as yourself. also she reminds us that every life is vulnerable at this time not only us. -

Rose bushes
My window opens into the backyard with rose bushes and drying up on the April’s sun neighbors’ bed sheets. As I go out to buy some meal I feel sunkisses on my face. How precious they are. No changes, the same pleasure as it was the last spring. No changes, the same regret, but now it became the kind of war fear that women used to have. Is he alright there? I don’t even know. No more opportunity to see him, even less than earlier. He’s in Poland, I’m in France and we are legislatively separated. True love is such a natural thing. It’s not artificial in other words, what literally means it can flourish without people’s help. You can have it inside you, and if you don’t, then your tree is supposed to grow later. Like rose bushes in front of my window, they are beautiful on their own. So us taught the quarantine, some real things as nature are going to overcome alone. And so is my love. It is such a good sign, no? Why then people often consider love as a weakness? I don’t know, I’m just going to go through as I always did. I keep hoping one day I will meet again the man I love the most and he will see that girl he loved since adolescence. But now I’m sitting here alone one more evening and writing him a letter: ‘ Heavy rain has stopped and the sun came out again but this time dressed up in its sunset attire in pastel tones. It smelled sweet and it smelled like freedom. Breathing became so easy that one moment it has got clear – happiness is there where you can breathe easily. What strangles us that keeps us tense that keeps us without a will. Do you want the happiness all life long? Then find it anywhere you can. If the happiness is just a moment then you shouldn’t forget that our time is weaved by them.’ -

Darkest Before Dawn
Darkest Before Dawn Our world is being ripped apart by a virus, Covid-19, which is causing illness and death. Many are fearful for their own safety, that of their families, their loved ones and for the world’s people. At times we feel helpless in the struggle to return to our old lives but we are not helpless! Inside all of us is an army that can help in the fight. This floral creation symbolises our struggle and hope for a return to health on our planet. In the centre you see Covid-19, spreading its tentacles of disease throughout the world. Standing physically apart but socially joined in a common struggle are the armies inside us. Love (Red Rose) Faith, Hope and Wisdom (Blue Iris) Strength (Gladiolus) Peace and Calm (Lavender) When we all unite our armies we will see the rebirth of a healthy world symbolised by Easter Daisies and a butterfly in flight.
