Letter from Mum
With lots of extra time to spare during the lockdowns, my Mum started writing letters to me as a way to share news. This was a lovely way to stay in touch between Australia and New Zealand, although by the time the letters made it through the very very slow postal system they were weeks out of date. This particular letter from the very start of the pandemic captures the novelty and chaos of the situation very well -- most events are starting to be cancelled, the border between NZ and AU has shut, and everyone is slowly coming to terms with what's happening. -

Covid Christmas
During December of 2020, Covid made shopping and knowing other's interests harder. We couldn't meet up with friends and host a secret santa. Nobody knew what people liked anymore since they couldn't see each other. Online shopping was hard since everything was delayed majorly. If having to figure out what people really wanted for christmas then having to find it or online shop (which could make it come late) this made a lot of people worried including me. Covid affected christmas in many bad ways but some good came out of it too. We got to see family a lot more and get closer with them, I got to see my brother who was in college. -

What was Christmas like for me and my family during COVID-19
During the month of December, my family I had some very challenging obstacles in the way. One being we couldn't have anyone over for Christmas dinner not only that but have people over in general. Another thing that has to do with not seeing each other is everyone is mailing things and a result of this is packages and gifts not making it on time. Something else to do with packages and mail is manufacturers aren't working because of COVID-19. These are some struggles and problems I had this Christmas. -

Voting by Mail in Moab Utah
When I was planning my trip, one consideration I had to make was how I was going to vote. I requested my absentee ballot very early and decided I would have my mom mail it to me to pick up through general delivery wherever I ended up being at the time. Where I ended up being was Moab Utah, exploring Arches and Canyonland National Parks. This picture shows me dropping my ballot in the dropbox in Moab to send it back to Connecticut. I think this object is indicative of 2020, specifically the presidential election. Though elections are always important, this one was especially so and will have a significant impact on the future of this country. This object demonstrates the importance of voting by mail in this election, but also in general, as I would have needed to vote by mail if I were on this trip in a normal election cycle as well. I would say that my personal experience is also emblematic of my generation’s determination to exercise their right to vote. -

Health Insurance Providers mailing reusable masks for medical appointments
On August 7, 2020 I received a message from a relative that their health insurance company had mailed them a small envelope with a cloth mask. At the time in Oklahoma, masks were still fairly difficult to find in stores and reusable masks were still available mostly online at considerable costs. The elderly relative said that her and her husband were told to use these if they went to a doctor's appointment or to a hospital. The pamphlet also advised them on the best way to wash and dry the mask for further use. This is something that seems like a small cost to the company, but could benefit everyone if it helped prevent people from getting sick, especially from COVID-19. -

Poll Workers under Tough Conditions
Practically the whole world has its eye on poll workers right now. With the pandemic, protests outside of recorder offices, and a massive amount of early mail-in ballots, poll workers are facing unprecedented working conditions. Many have faced scrutiny for how slow the process its going, but people seem to forget that we are in the middle of a pandemic and these workers need all the help, and not criticism, they can get. Michigan's secretary of state took to twitter to say, "Dear members of the public: Please stop making harassing & threatening calls to my staff. They are kind, hardworking public servants just doing their job. Asking them to shove sharpies in uncomfortable places is never appropriate & is a sad commentary on the state of our nation." -

Voting By Mail
Around 28 million people out of 138 million who voted, voted by mail in the 2016 election. Somehow this year we are expecting a dramatic increase in vote by mail, with a 4-5 month notice. I wonder how this will affect our election? -

The UPS Store Limits Number of Customers Inside the Store to 3 to Observe CDC Social Distancing Guidelines
The Norman, Oklahoma UPS Store has changed their policy customer capacity per CDC guidelines to encourage six foot social distancing. This particular store only allows in three customers at a time. On previous days there has been as many as ten people waiting in line inside while others use the mail box section or shop their shipping supplies. This limit of three customers is designed specifically for the six foot social distancing practice to be observed. Beyond the three customers, requires that people must wait in line along the sidewalk outside the business. Contributed by Clinton P. A postcard from a friend
The image depicts a postcard sent to me by a friend who lives only a half an hour away. It represents engagement with outdated technology in order to attempt some semblance of connection in a time and place where that connection is almost impossible. -

UVC Sanitizing Station Becomes a Daily Routine for Processing Business Mail During COVID-19
Kelly is processing mail for Blanchard, OK insurance agency. The office utilizes a PurLite UVC Sanitizing devices that uses two strong Ultraviolet bulbs to eliminate bacteria and viruses in 30 second intervals. The device was purchased specifically to improve cleaning efficiency of mail-in forms and payments while decreasing risk of COVID-19 exposure to employees. This process requires multiple areas that must not cross-contaminate. These include a hot area (unprocessed mail), destroy area (mail to be shredded), and a clean station that awaits further processing by other employees. The process of sanitizing mail has become a daily routine as increased mail-in payments and mail-in signature forms have replaced walk-in requests during COVID-19 quarantine. My Stupid Dead iPhone
This phone crashed on me the beginning of last week. While I waited for my new phone to arrive in the mail, it was at first liberating to be without at phone. I didn't check the news as much, didn't feel as weighed down emotionally. However, it quickly became more anxiety-producing to not have a phone. It was harder to communicate with the outside world. When I did have to call someone, I used my husband's phone. This prompted friends to worry that I was laying in a ditch somewhere. It felt very good when that package arrived from Apple. -

Fresno State Athletics gives their student athletes a shirt and letter during COVID-19. in the mail
I play volleyball at Fresno State in California and I received this in the mail from my athletics department. It is so cool to see them send out their love to every single one of their athletes during this time. The Fresno State Athletics Department cares about their athletes and it was a nice feeling to get this in the mail. They also gave us a shirt to remember this time for the rest of our lives. No dogs down but also go dogs! -
