NYC judge nixes mask mandates for toddlers, Eric Adams plans to appeal
This is a story by Bernadette Hogan, Cayla Bamberger, Nolan Hicks and Natalie O'Neill for the New York Post. This story is about masking for young kids and the struggle within the local government on what is best to do. A Staten Island judge ruled against masks for toddlers in New York City. Parents in support of this claim that this is a good thing because masks could make it harder for kids to socialize and read emotions. Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, plans to appeal this to reinstate masks, where he believes that if you don't know the vaccination status of everyone in a room that you should wear a mask. -

NYC Schools Might be Headed for Another Shutdown
NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio is contemplating whether or not to shut down schools in the city again. Ironically schools would be shut down but bars and restaurants might stay open despite the very low transmission rate in public schools. Other cities have begun canceling in-person classes such a Boston. Other countries such as Germany deemed schools an essential service and has left them open. There is much concern among NYC teachers as they weigh the costs of a total shift to online school again. -

No Hocus Pocus Door to Door
The Mayor of Columbus, MS, Robert Smith, and his office issued a public notice on October 22, 2020 that there should be no door to door trick or treating. In place of door to door trick or treating the city and fellow organizers have planned events for trick or treating throughout the city. This action is helpful and thoughtful for all citizens involved. It allows the citizens to remain safe in their homes if they so wish or it gives citizens the opportunity to celebrate Halloween during the pandemic. Of course social distancing will be practiced for all Halloween events. This is important for children to celebrate a fun holiday while practicing social distancing. Also important to realize the safety and health conditions for others that are at high risk for Covid 19. -

Political Activism in the Midst of a Pandemic: Curfew is Moved to 8pm
On June 2nd, Mayor De Blasio changed the already established curfew from 11pm-5am to 8pm-5am. This was a very historical moment in New York, as there has never been any curfew enforced on the city in my lifetime and 8pm seemed very early. I worried for essential workers and anyone who had to rely on public transportation to get home for work, as they were arresting people who were out after 8pm if they did not have a valid excuse or explanation. Citizens Protest at Wichita Mayor's Residence
This news article from KSN, a Kansas news network, highlights the aggravation of political tensions that have only gotten worse with COVID-19's disruption of US society. In a move reminiscent of protestor tactics in St. Louis, Missouri, a group of Wichitans, disgusted with the mayor's successful push to implement city-wide mask use, staged a protest outside his residence, with its organizer even advocating, should participants choose, to exercise "Second Amendment rights" as a sign of protest. Although not a large demonstration, this article nevertheless adds to the emerging portrait of a country and its communities cleaved by politics and a pandemic. -
