Custom Black Lives Matter Masks
This is an Instagram post by shopdashofk. This is a post on custom masks with the words "Black Lives Matter" and "I Can't Breathe" written on them. These masks are meant to send a message on racial disparities between Black people and those of other races. Writing messages on masks has been a trend across all political spectrums, with some choosing different slogans or symbols to use, in order to send messages much like the masks featured here. This evokes some of the larger culture surrounding mask wearing in general, where they have been used much like graphic t-shirts to say messages people want heard. It is a new social phenomenon that has come with the pandemic, and it is still popular among some people. -

HIST30060 Texts from a supermarket service manager regarding COVID cleaning
These are screenshots of text messages sent from a supermarket manager to a group chat of service team members of a major Australian supermarket in Altona North, Melbourne. They detail the new cleaning regime that became part of the responsibilities of working in a supermarket during the pandemic. These include instructions about wiping down surfaces with sanitiser and keeping 1.5m distance from coworkers. These texts came a few days after Victoria's third lockdown was announced. I worked at the supermarket at the time and it was an extremely chaotic period, made more hectic by ever-changing restrictions and developments in COVID-safe practices. We would get texts like these quite frequently during this third lockdown because it was so important that supermarket essential workers kept abreast of COVID developments and worked to make supermarkets as safe as possible. -

If it isn't one thing its another
I have never realized how different my friends on social media are. Growing up in Los Angeles I have many friends who are all politically and socially like-minded. My husband joined the military and then my social media was flooded with the opposite from my "liberal" friends. The differences of opinions never bothered me and hardly ever showed themselves until Trump became president. It's funny how Trump ignited a flame in so many people. Today with politics fueling everything I still see that clear distinction between my friend groups. The saddest part about the pandemic is seeing how science has been "canceled" and political views have somehow replaced common sense. Because so many Democrats are urging people to get vaccinated it seems like Republicans must refuse. I see posts like the one pictured all the time. There's always a reason to refuse common sense. First, it was because COVID wasn't real, then it was because their right to contract covid was being infringed on. I heard some say robots were being implanted, that the government was running experiments on willing democrats. When the death rate continued to rise, they said the numbers were made up. Today it seems like most covid deniers are claiming that if COVID was real essential workers would not be required to be protected against it. I will never understand their reasoning. -

Doctor asking us to stay home
This image, and others like it, began circulating my social media feeds around mid March in reaction to people not wanting to stay home. The doctors were putting their lives on the line to save those that became ill and the least we could do was stay home. The theory being that if we all stayed home then there would be less people infected and the rush of covid patients would be slowed. I personally took the stay at home order/ask very seriously. *This image appeared in my Facebook feed. It shows a doctor holding a sign asking everyone to stay home. -

A Conflicting Agenda
This image portrays two women in downtown Sacramento in protest of the shelter-in-place lockdown that Governor Gavin Newsom implemented. One women is seen holding a sign that portrays Governor Gavin Newsom as part of the Nazi regime or compared with Adolf Hitler. Another woman is seen in the foreground carrying a child on her back with another sign declaring that “All Businesses Are Essential”. Both women are protesting against business closures, unemployment, and being unable to return to the workforce. While with some jobs work is almost guaranteed like those who work for the state, other private and small businesses are suffering. On the other hand, while having the freedom to assemble and speak openly comes with its benefits, the sign depicting Gavin Newsom as a Nazi is quite extreme. The level of ignorance present in this photograph equates its offensive demeanor and deeply undermines the experiences of Holocaust survivors and the other millions of lives lost. For me fellow Sacramentans, seeing signs and descriptions such as these make me feel less proud of the town I live in. I thought the pandemic would help us realize our insensitive words and unnecessary slurs but it’s only reminded many people of a troubled past. The pandemic has truly brought a side of the American people that I have never seen and as a young student seeing adults act with rational thought makes me wonder where our world will be in the next few decades. If the world changes, so do we. Some people have a hard time overcoming adversity and the pandemic has exposed triggers amongst the American people. One of them being economic downfall. The image clearly represents what some individuals believe to be most important and valued in life. It seems that we have reached a point through this pandemic that we no longer prioritize the lives of each other but rather how much money is in the bank. In many ways, this is a reflection of what America was built off of. -

Through Chinese Social Media -- 4
I’m a study-abroad student. Due to the virus, I had to stay at home in New York. I got the update of the virus through Chinese social media, and I think it is really interesting. I’m going to share some posts from Chinese social media about the virus. Those two weeks, China holds an online concert, “Believe in the Future,” steaming on the social media. It is the largest online concert in the Chinese music industry. The concert invited more than hundreds of celebrities to do cloud performance. The goal of the concert is to bring hope and heal the heart. There is no advertising and no copyright, all things free. "6 Feet Apart" Song from Luke Combs
This music video of the song “6 Feet Apart” from Luke Combs serves as a message for gratitude during the pandemic crisis. Arizona Highway Signs Send a Reminder to Keep Distance During COVID-19 Pandemic
This is an image of a highway sign on the i17 in Arizona. These signs are being posted on every highway throughout the state. This particular sign reads "Keep your distance on highways and in person." Images like this show the measures Arizona is taking as they try to keep citizens indoors and out of large groups. Interestingly enough, you would only see this message if you were out of your house which is the opposite of following the guidelines put in place. Seeing these messages on the road are nerve-racking and make the entire pandemic feel even more real than the news. -

COVID 19 Abandoned Building
This picture was taken at an abandoned building along Highway 905 in Longs, South Carolina on my drive home from work. Being out of work for over two weeks made me eager to get back to work as a pet groomer achieve some sense of normalcy. Work can often be fast paced and the new requirement of masks and curbside-only pick-up made things a little different, but I looked forward to the drive home, which I usually use to clear my head and unwind. Seeing this made me realize that no matter where we go or what we do, COVID 19 will have a lasting impact that we may be reminded of in the least expected places. Hopefully this can be painted over in the future with something far brighter and encouraging. -

See religions around the world adapt in the age of coronavirus
Due to the mayhem following the coronavirus pandemic that has been occurring worldwide, “religious leaders have had to find creative ways to bring their services and communities together” according to Adam Jeffery with the CNBC. Throughout the article, Jeffrey displayed how all around the world religious leaders have thought of very innovative ways to keep their followers still involved in the church and to try to keep communities as together as possible. In Austria, the catholic priest Johannes Laichner is “circulating incense over the photographs of members of his congregation” (Jeffery, 2020). In places like Bowie, Maryland, Rv. Scott Holmer risks his life to go outside and “make the sign of a cross while holding confession in the church parking lot” (Jeffery, 2020). In Israel, Ultra-Orthodoc Jews still show their faithfulness to their house of worship as they “pray along a street outside their closed synagogue while respecting the social distancing regulations'' (Jeffery, 2020). Places all over the world are still keeping their faith in the higher power they believe in during such a sad and crazy time that we’re living in. Both the people as well as the religious leaders all around are displaying their support for each other in various ways to convey the message that regardless of what may be going on in the world, the higher power is still the answer and we’re in this together. -

Cleveland Rocks
On a neighborhood walk, our family counted sixteen rocks along two blocks of Edgehill Road painted with positive messages related to the pandemic. Similar rocks have appeared in other communities around the nation, a result of a desire to find new ways to occupy time spent sheltering at home. They offer opportunities either for scavenger hunts and certainly brighten the spirits of passersby. Like the rock pictured here, most of the rocks we saw were propped against tree trunks in what Clevelanders call "tree lawns" (sidewalk strips). After seeing the rocks, our daughter felt inspired, so when we got home we found some rocks, gathered her art supplies, and sat on our front porch to paint some rocks of our own. -
A 75-degree Tuesday, Many people were out an about in Logan Square, Chicago
"The End is Nigh"
Walking down the street, it is more likely than not for one to stumble into a message like this. While many of these messages serve as a way to limit anxieties—bringing Chicago together in this ‘shelter in place’ initiative—this message differs. I cannot say that this is meant to bring people together. Yet, in a way, it is relatable. These last few weeks have produced a range of emotions in everyone—and while it is important to produce uplift for pedestrians emerging from their homes, it is also important to recognize that messages like “the end is nigh” is equally representative of the emotions that are present right now. #DePaulHST391 -

"This Will Pass"
It has been a common occurrence to see messages in windows, streets, and porches in the neighborhoods of Chicago. Social distancing has instilled barriers into people’s lives and these messages are a sign from others that they are with you, while we all experience the effects of COVID-19. Some of these messages are uplifting while others can be relatively nihilistic. Either way it can be seen as an expression of the anxieties that stem from this plague—there are plenty of unknowns, but messages like “this will pass” is a nice reminder that community is still present in these trying times.#DePaulHST391 -
