  My grandmother's birthday is in May, so last year, during the beginning of the pandemic, we were unable to visit her and celebrate her birthday or Mother's Day. So, we sent her a nice card, and in it, my brother and boyfriend made up the poem. It reads "roses are red, violets are blue, when coronavirus is over, we'll come see you! xoxo Owen + Andrew"

  Mothers Day 2021

  I wasnt expecting a take-home craft this year from my Kindergartener especially with covid restrictions mostly still in place. Instead, her teacher and school went above and beyond. We all wore masks and each class took turns in the cafeteria in order to limit the number of people. We were surprised by placemats (spaced six feet apart) with snacks and a water bottle. My daughter was able to show me work and pictures from her Kindergarten year, while I ate my snacks she gave me the sweetest "massage" then read me a book. The kids then got up on stage and sang us a song as best they could. I'm not the sort to cry but I did. I'm not sure if it was because my daughter is just so cute or if it was the realization of how strong she's been this year. Virtual learning was tough, wearing a mask to school was tough, being six during a global pandemic was tough but my daughter showed me that she's tougher. I hope one day she will realize just how much I admire her.

  Virtual Girl Scout Meeting

  When the stay at home order was called in California, our Brownie Troop was planning for an overnight experience that weekend that had to be cancelled. Then our local Girl Scout council announced the closure of all activities through the rest of March. As the weeks progressed and it became clear all of planned activities would be postponed, we switched to a virtual platform as an experiment. During our first meeting, we just played games over Zoom, because we weren't sure how valuable and fun it would be virtually, but were pleasantly surprised how much the girls liked it. Over Mother's Day weekend, we held a virtual meeting where we had the girls make a COVID-19 virtual capsule, as well as make a Mother's Day craft for an important woman in their lives. We dropped off the supplies to each girls' house (no contact) and facilitated making the craft over zoom.

  Emotional Toll

  I work at a prominent community college in California. When we first started hearing about the virus we took precautions right away in the office. First those employees over 65 were sent home to work remotely, because they were identified early on as being a risk group. Then we decided as a college to take all of the on ground classes and convert them to online for the remainder of the spring semester. Shortly after that, most all of the faculty and students were sent home to shelter in place. Those remaining were the lab classes in the industrial arts area and some CTE programs. Staff remained on campus and weeks went by as we continued to operate the college. Slowly staff were asked to work remotely from home, taking their work home with them. Division Offices remained open, as did the IT and Facility areas. The community continued to walk in the door with concerns and questions. Some of us felt we were at risk of infection, because no one really knew much about the virus at this point. I personally felt the effects of stress building. We were asked if we would like to begin working from home in mid-March by our supervisor, but there still wasn’t a directive from the District, so I was concerned. I took work home and my plants, not knowing if and when I would return, because of my age; almost 62. I worked remotely for seven days and then over the next weekend I became incapacitated, due to stress not only regarding the virus, family dynamics, elder care and stress of trying to do my work from a makeshift home office. I was out of the office for nine weeks, while my doctors prescribed slow acting medicines. I came out of my depressed state and now there are still so many things we don’t know about the virus. Besides the toll on me physically and emotionally I also saw a huge chunk of my retirement disappear, as the stock market tumbled. $40K lost out of one account alone. At my age I’ll likely never recover. I expect there will be fallout in other areas as well. While we were all wondering where we could go to buy toilet paper and disinfectant wipes, airlines were parking their planes, car rentals were parking their fleets and the housing market became a whole new game. Where will this all end up is anyone’s guess. What it has done is, the virus has been the great equalizer. Were all in this together. It knows no boundaries except that seniors appear to be the hardest hit group and are accounting for the largest percentage of deaths. On a personal note, I have not been able to meet my new grandson who was born on Mother’s Day because of Covid risk concerns my daughter has and I have to respect that and meet him over the Internet. My own Mom is 81 and will no longer accept a hug from me. It’s just sad. Dianne Nau

  No More Different, Please

  I really want more than really anything right now to go back to my usual routine and especially go back to swim practice. I am really fed up with doing different cross training to try to make my swimming not suck. It feels like even though I have been swimming competitively for seven years like I am not a swimmer. I haven’t even been in the water or gone to a practice in almost two months. I really don’t like how even if I go outside and go to a store that is open everything is so different and I can’t help wondering if these changes are going to last. Today I woke up I think the latest I have ever woken up. The difference is that when I saw how late it was, I jumped out of bed and got straight to work. I finished my workout so early that I got to make doughnuts. If COVID-19 had not happened I would have not learned all of the recipes I got to learn.   Quarantine Mother's Day

  Today I tried to make my day more interesting by staying more focused on what I was doing right at that moment. I feel like this helps me to make the day go by faster and have a better quality of the things I did. Today I did my workout and then helped my mom make my pinata for my sister’s 5th birthday. We took a pizza box and covered it in different colored and cut streamers. We also put a picture of a unicorn in the center since that is the theme of the party. Even though it took a really long time and hurt my back my mother and I had a lot of fun and were very proud with the results. This Mother’s Day I was more thankful that ever for my mother because she is the one who has kept my family together during this tough time. The coronavirus has made this day different since my family would normally treat my mother to her favorite restaurant. I don’t even know what is open or if something will ever open which is a scary thought. #LSMS #NSD

  Diane's Coronavirus Diary

  I began this journal March 9, 2020, two days before New Mexico's first confirmed COVID-19 cases. March 9 was my husband and my 19th wedding anniversary and the day we last shopped for groceries. This originated as a Pages document on my iPad. I am writing to document this experience, not knowing how things will turn out for us and our family. I am writing as a way to explore my own responses to the pandemic. I have shared responses from my daughter to my journal in a couple of places in the journal. 3/09/2020 through 5/10/2020 and ongoing. My husband and I are retired and recently moved to a new neighborhood. We have absolutely LOVED our time here. We are located just a block from the University of New Mexico and just four short blocks from the Nob Hill district. We are within walking distance of many restaurants and are just minutes from several bus lines. We would often hop on the bus to downtown or uptown. We haven't ridden the busses since early March, we haven't been to a restaurant either. Our granddaughter is living with us full time, now, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.   Mother's day COVID-19 style

  My grandma lives alone and has not gone out since a shelter in place order has been implemented. So for mother's day, some of us gathered in her garage and backyard to spend some time with her. Sadly, we could not hug her or eat lunch indoors with her, but at least we got some time with her face-to-face.

  Mother Health Care Professionals and their children

  This image displays a baby, reaching out and touching the face shield of what seems to be her mother all gowned up and dressed in PPE. The woman in the picture who seems to be a health care worker who is also a mother is crying as she is torn away from beating able to hug and kiss her child because of the possibility of being infected after working in the hospital with coronavirus patients. This picture is especially special because it touches upon the hardships that health care workers are facing after working with patients all-day and not being able to have that relief of coming home and being comforted by their family members. This post was also made right before mother's day. The caption to this picture was in Portuguese and said "Mães. Hoje é o vosso dia.
