Kitchen table haircuts
My friend drove down from Idaho to visit. She's been in isolation for weeks, we've been in isolation for weeks and she decided the best way to celebrate the end of the semester was to drive to Tempe. She also is a certified cosmetologist, and none of the hair salons are open, so we all got kitchen table haircuts. -

A Twitter post showing a sign on the window of Gionino's Pizzeria in Orville, Ohio. People encouraged to sign up for CSA
People are being encouraged to sign up for CSA (community supported agriculture) to support local farmers and eat healthy during the pandemic. People stocked up at the grocery store when the pandemic started so it became harder for people to buy certain items. Those who lost jobs have been struggling even more to be able to afford food. #NortheasternJOTPY -

"A Blessing in Disguise“
I’m a freshman at Arizona State University, which was a big jump since I started off my life in a small town in Ohio. But I was ready for an adventure.College just finally started to get good. I was making some really good friends, enjoying work on campus, and doing well in my studies. And then it hit. COVID-19 hit. My job closed down, my friends moved back home, and school went all online. I was distraught. How could I do this on my own? How will I mentally get through this? But my community built me up. Zoom classes turned into a Zoom get together‘s with my classmates and friends. My teachers were understanding and even more helpful during this time. My coworkers and I grew even stronger bonds through this. At the beginning of this worldwide pandemic I thought to myself “how will I manage”, but now I am here to say we have gotten through the bulk of it and it has not only made me a stronger person but a stronger friend and student. All in all, though I thought this would have been the worst thing that could ever happen I’m here to say I’m more confident my studies, I know I have amazing friends and mentors to back me up, and I know any day now things will go back to normal and we will all be grateful and cherish how lucky we are to have the things that we have and to attend a university as amazing as Arizona State. #REL101 -

Ohio Stay at Home Protesters or the Purge? Photo by Joshua Bickel
Many images from this pandemic are haunting: empty grocery store aisles, deserted national monuments, shuttered restaurants. But this image captured by Joshua Bickel takes the cake. Positioned from inside the Ohio Statehouse, Bickel snaps outraged protestors, chanting various cries against the governor and the Stay-at-Home orders that blanket the state. The people sport banal nationalistic tokens such as Trump hats and American flags, but no face-masks, an article that has come to epitomize civic and public duty in the weeks past. This image shows how not only has the pandemic spread across the nation, but so have doubts and nudges against authority from higher ups in the American government. Protests of this nature have not cropped up in other parts of the world nearly to the extent that they have swept the great USofA. Some point our anomalous trends to lack of leadership in Washington and lack of national unity in the midst of what can only be called a public health/economic/social crisis. Benedict Anderson's "imagined community" that pulls a nation together is simply falling apart as we cannot come together and unite under facts, science, and leadership at a time when we need it most. Bickel's image portrays an America that is not filled with communion and fraternity, but riddled with "hoaxes" and ignorance. Of course we are all wanting to return to our normal lives, but to go out and protest and participate in an activity that inherently prolongs our quarantine? Seems pretty un-American to me. -

Tree Limb Arch, Cumberland Park, Cleveland Heights, OH
Within a few days after Gov. DeWine started Ohio's "shelter in place" order, a small arch made of tree limbs appeared in Cumberland Park along Cumberland Road. On a more recent walk, I found that someone had rebuilt the arch on a larger scale. It's interesting to watch for signs of how people do various things to fight boredom. -

Cleveland Rocks
On a neighborhood walk, our family counted sixteen rocks along two blocks of Edgehill Road painted with positive messages related to the pandemic. Similar rocks have appeared in other communities around the nation, a result of a desire to find new ways to occupy time spent sheltering at home. They offer opportunities either for scavenger hunts and certainly brighten the spirits of passersby. Like the rock pictured here, most of the rocks we saw were propped against tree trunks in what Clevelanders call "tree lawns" (sidewalk strips). After seeing the rocks, our daughter felt inspired, so when we got home we found some rocks, gathered her art supplies, and sat on our front porch to paint some rocks of our own. -

My husband is "presumed positive" for the coronavirus and is quarantined on our porch. (Presumed positive is the physician's term after a telemedicine appointment. There are no tests available, unless one is medical personnel or in dire health.) This image shows the room in which he is quarantined. -

The Social Distanced Family
My Husband and dog Ginger are spending time together on our office couch. We have not left our house other than going to the store twice, in the last 13 days. My husband was playing a video game as I continue to do college homework via the internet. Our dog Ginger has been very happy we both have been home. We have been zooming and using Discord to talk to our friends, who we miss dearly. We didn't visit our uncle or my father on their birthdays. We decided to take Governer Dewine's plea for social distancing very seriously. The weather in Ohio is still cold, we look forward to when we can enjoy some sunshine. -

Guarding the Water
The stores have been packed, so I went to the grocery store this morning at 6 am. They had a security guard standing with the water to ensure nobody took too many.
