War with an Invisible Enemy
This photo that this painting is inspired by was taken in February in Bozhou, China of workers disinfecting an outdoor area when the Chinese lockdown was at its peak. The image was very moving when I first saw it. The setting, with only trees visible behind them in the photograph, makes it seem as if they are disinfecting nature. Although both people and viruses are natural organisms, nothing in this painting seems natural. No skin, no faces, just machinery, hazmat suits, and smoke. I’m also fascinated by the idea that there is such caution and seriousness in the combat of something invisible. What I do to Help Pass the Time
I was really bored and needed something to help me pass the time while stuck at home. I was able to purchase this paint by number kit online. I severely underestimated how much time it would take to complete this painting. The portion that is painted took me about three days of on and off work. I am still working on it, and I have all the time in the world right now. It is interesting to see how different people pass their time during the pandemic. Some people are doing major projects while others just small ones. #CSUS #HIST15H -

Tulips in Spring 2020
Spring, Leawood Kansas, mother's day. While taking walks we get to enjoy the beauty of Spring in Kansas. On mother's day i wanted to paint the beauty of tulips, and somehow the coronavirus become part of the beauty of nature... present, silent, intrusive.... and still part of our lives... in spite of our efforts to avoid it. The Spring is blooming in 2020, beautifully, while covid-19 is all around us. -

Paint by Numbers
This image shows an incomplete paint by numbers that is depicting a French cafe. During a time of boredom and anxiety, artistic outlets such as this one provides comfort and distraction. I bought this paint by numbers to alleviate my boredom and to give me an excuse to step away from my family if I needed alone time. I bought this project when I knew I’d be in quarantine for more than two weeks. This complex painting allows me to not think about the scariness of the news and helps calm my anxiety about the current state of affairs. -

The revival of life once again
This art piece “Revival of life once again” portrays dance moves of a life that we once had and took for granted before COVID-19. The girl in the center is dancing to the music as the music sways with the emotions of her body. There is a man on his knees playing the drums next to her and adding to the beats that the girl is dancing to. This painting also makes me hopeful of times after the quarantine when we will all be able to dance to the music the way that the girl is moving and play instruments the way that the man is playing his drum set. The Ferris wheel in the background is also reminiscent of summer festivals and amusement parks. We all desire to go back to fun Ferris wheels in summer festivals and amusement parks. Festivals brought a sort of fun and liveliness in our lives represented by all the different colors. -

My Self-Quarantine Painting
During this pandemic, there is a lot of uncertainty going around and many people are feeling lost, especially when it comes to feeling productive or simply finding things to do each day. I am one of these people. As a child, I loved art, even though I wasn't very good at it. As the years passed, I found that I stopped doing a lot of the things that I loved to focus on things that I felt were more important, such as school and work. Just recently, I figured that I have more time than ever to reconnect with old hobbies, and it really made me happy to go back to doing things (painting, in this case) that I was passionate about. What this says about the pandemic is that although times are tough and you might find yourself stuck in the same routine every day, there are still ways to make the most out of a negative situation. If anything, now is the perfect time to catch up on some of the things you wish you could've done years ago. #REL101 -

Life After People
Brooklyne Hurley, age 22, has found COVID-19 to cause a lot of reflection for her. When asked how she was entertaining herself, she said "I've mostly just been painting." The piece featured above was inspired by Brooklyne wondering "what would life be like after people. What we've done here isn't just going to go away. These plastics won't ever leave and the Earth has to deal with that, not us." -

A mother’s portrait of her prep student deep in concentration during homeschool art class.
This portrait of my son was the first time I have painted since my child was born. Although our household is busier than ever, I was inspired by my son’s love of art. We will look back on our time together at home as a special time. -

Paint situation is a bit out of control.
I've been letting my son Juliían Peralta-Kole paint everyday. He's been painting multiple times a day for a week now, but he seems less interested in painting on paper, and more curious about different uses for paint and painting with his fingers. I used painting to earn myself a brief reprieve this morning, and before I could finish my coffee he had paint all over his hands. I cleaned it up, and now the paint is put away. I'll only get it out when I'm able to watch him carefully. -

Maya's wall of art.
Luckily my 5 yo continues to lead a fairly normal life. Her screen time is usually limited to when her brother naps, (about 2 hrs. a day), and she is happy to spend the rest of the day playing, painting, and singing. Occasionally, she does talk about missing school, her friends, and her nana in Michigan, but we can usually patch over the pain with a video call. -

I caved. I let the 1 yo paint.
It's hard to keep an active 1 yo entertained when the parks are closed, swim class was canceled, and I can't even take him to the supermarket for a light distraction. So, I caved. I broke down after watching him cry and say "I want," repeatedly while stretching his hands towards his sister's paints and paintbrushes. On Friday night, I figured, sure it's going to be a mess, and it might be a disaster, but provided he doesn't eat it, it's harmless. -

Art made during the pandemic
My fourteen year old son, Benjamin, created this painting on March 26, 2020. He'd been home for one week at that point. He stayed up late at night long after we'd gone to bed to make some art. I found this in the morning. He gave his permission to me to add this to this site. -

Queen of Hygiene
The painting is of a girl taking a bath in a bathroom with a few plants, a big window and a sink with a mirror. She has long hair and her knees poke out of the bathwater. During the pandemic, hygiene is essential. Washing your hands can be the difference between life and death. Covid-19 has proven to also be extremely stressful and anxiety inducing. A hot bath is the perfect solution to both problems :) -
