Cheryl Oral History, 2021/12/12
Cheryl is just one of my many Eau Claire County residents who have been experiencing the many issues of COVID in the nursing home environment. But what makes Cheryl’s story unique is that throughout this pandemic she has seen three different outbreaks within her facility and just recently experienced Covid for the first time earlier this month. However, Cheryl claims that thanks to COVID nursing homes, especially her current facility, will never resort back to normal. Much like her potential to engage in therapy, COVID has halted many aspects of Health care’s motivational tone and instead turned into an isolation facility. Through her limited experiences with staff and her few conversations with family and her roommates, Cheryl has hit rock bottom a few times. Yet through her love of the holidays and association with such a supportive family, Cheryl continues through, what she predicts, to be the next major virus that will never leave. -

Going to the doctor during the pandemic
Me and my mother drove down to Dell Children's hospital as we always do for our PT. Wednesday are busy days for them, so we parked on the second floor of the parking garage. My knees were feeling bad that day so we took the elevator. A family of three were also taking the elevator, and since the max capacity was four people we had to wait. We walked into the medical center (fully masked of course) but before we could leave the entryway we had to have our temperatures taken (mine was 97.1, like always) and answer a few questions "Have you had any symptoms? Fever? Headache? Coughing? Sore throat? Is anybody in your house being currently tested for COVID?" and since all the answers "no" we could enter. I've had a few days where I felt fine enough to go but because I had a headache I couldn't. The waiting room wasn't packed by any sense of the word, but since we had to make sure to keep our distance from other people we couldn't sit down anywhere. My PT (Physical Therapist) called me in, and we exercised for an hour, fully masked, which makes it a lot more uncomfortable, also making sure to keep our distance from everybody else. I went out afterwards and my mom and I went in our car, put some hand sanitizer on, and left to repeat the process next week. -

Covid-19: Keeping a Positive Mindset
We all were taken by surprise when we heard of how fast cases sky-rocketed soon after the single student case at ASU, and for most of us, it has been a real struggle, whether it has to do with family, mental health, jobs, or school. Whatever it is, Covid-19 has impacted us all in at least one way. For me, this pandemic has taken me through a roller coaster of positives and negatives throughout the past 7 months. It is a given that the changes happening in the world have made it difficult to adjust, especially to learning. As a biological sciences major, virtual labs are extremely hard to understand to me, and sitting at home in front of a laptop all day is quite exhausting. However, I think that in light of what is happening, it is important to stay positive and think about how this pandemic can have positive impacts as well. For example, I believe that Covid-19 has truly positively influenced me and my state of mind, at least once I learned to adapt to it. When quarantine first occurred, it was so sudden and unexpected. We could not go to the gym to relieve stress or go out without a mask, which I forgot to bring half of the time. Although a month later of boredom, I realized what this meant in terms of life. Many times we all take things for granted, and we don’t realize what we have in front of us, such as the opportunities we have and to say that we are alive. The pandemic opened my eyes, and with usually being busy all day, I took the time I had during summer to try new things and figure out what I want to do with my life. I picked up my guitar for the first time in years and taught myself how to play again. I started painting again. I did all of the things I never got to do anymore because of how busy life was at the time before the pandemic. I did some research on physical therapy school at Northern Arizona University and made goals. I took the negatives and turned them into positives, and I would say I am a much more positive person than I was months before. Of course, this is only my individual situation, and Covid-19 has brought tragedy. However, I think this is an opportunity to adapt and to work on yourself, like I did.
