The West in the face of crises since the nineteenth century In the West, returning to the land and to locality is one of the traditional responses to crises
Confronted with what may appear to be a series of global crises - health, environmental, economic and even democratic - the ideas on the virtues of what is local and rural are becoming increasingly heard. This article aims at putting this return to locality in historical perspective. For almost three hundred years, Western societies have gone through profound changes, especially economic ones, at the cost of a break with nature, in a more or less dramatic, and more or less painful way. Throughout our recent history, surprisingly diverse voices (political leaders, artists, activists, etc.) have conjured up this return to the land, which has taken on various forms. This return appears to be a providential solution to these disruptive changes. The health crisis due to Covid 19 seems to have not only confirmed, but also exacerbated this trend. -

Why have politicians stopped talking about Covid?
This is a text story from Vox by Dylan Scott. The article claims that COVID helped sink President Donald Trump's re-election campaign, yet despite this, it is not being focused on by either party. Though, this author believes the Democrat response hasn't been much better, with people not really touting President Joe Biden's vaccine rollout and other initiatives. The author links the reason for inflation being COVID interrupting supply lines, which is on people's minds for this midterm election. According to Gallup polling, COVID has lost importance in many people's minds, with it falling behind Russia and gas prices. On the Republican side of things, COVID is rarely mentioned, and if it is, it is in a negative light. Scott says that candidates favored by Donald Trump have gone against his ideas, with them being more skeptical of vaccines, and some refusing to get the vaccine at all. COVID is being tied to an anti-establishment attitude that has been rising within the Republican party. As for my own opinion on this piece, I believe that is does bring up an interesting point with linking COVID to current inflation. I do agree that COVID has impacted the economy for the worst with supply chains being more limited and rising spending of the federal government to counter it, but I do not think it can explain everything. Federal spending in general has been on an increase, which is driving up the cost of items, and not all that spending is COVID related. In addition to that, the shutdown of important pipelines has made reliance on foreign oil more of a necessity, which then drives up gas prices. These types of decisions can't all be traced back to COVID. So while I do think COVID has impacted the economy, I do not think it explains nearly all the economic issues the United States is facing. -

A Game of Numbers
The death of so many Americans is something that is usually a cause for pause in the national discussion. In past traumatic national circumstances, a period of mourning is required before a return to normal. It seems as though in 2020, healthcare and death don't seem to matter as much. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #rushmore. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it showcases a comparison between two administrations, two similar public crisis, and the public/governmental response. -

U.S. Excellent Response to Covid
At the beginning of quarantine, I and many people hoped that with quarantine and a sound government plan we would all collectively be able to beat coronavirus and get back to living our lives. As we pass day 94 in California since the Governor mandated a stay at home order, it really feels as though we haven't given our best go of things. Although individual states and locals have had varying success, the Federal response seems to amount to just hoping that it will go away and won't have to be dealt with anymore. -

Indigenous Peoples of the Philippines: Particular Challenges In Facing COVID-19
“Indigenous Peoples are no strangers to disease and disaster. Through generations, Indigenous Peoples have established responses and coping mechanisms – grounded in traditional knowledge, customs and practices – to different circumstances affecting their communities. These are all founded on one fundamental principle: to ensure that the community survives. A common response across Indigenous communities is that of closing-off the community to all – this means no one can enter the community until deemed safe. Such community closures are done for different reasons. In the Cordillera, Philippines such practice is regularly observed during the agricultural cycle. Before or after the fields are ready for planting and harvesting, the community declares ubaya/tengaw which basically means everyone stays at home, no hard labor is to be done by anyone. This is a time for the community and the earth to rest and typically lasts a day or two.” #IndigenousStories -

Limiting the Line
Hmart is an asian market that carries a variety of food items popular in many different asian countries. It is one of my favorite grocery stores to shop at. It was also the first grocery store I have been to doing the pandemic that has i.plemented careful procedures for guest whose entering the store. First, the workers outside are keeping close count of how many people are in the store by monitoring the entrance and exit. They are also sanitizing all shopping baskets and carts at the entrance so guest don't have to touch them until after watching then be sanitized, and finally the store is giving plastic gloves to consumers who enter the store and do not have a pair. I also noticed while doing my grocery shopping that every single person in the store had some form of face mask on them, including employees. I know as time goes on more stores will implement similar policies, for now it seems like Hmart is adjusting well to the pandemic and taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. Seeing this just confirmed why Hmart will continue to be my go to store for supplies during the outbreak. -

Kimberley Bulletin: Covid-19 (Coronavirus) Responses
A regular Covid-19 bulletin issued to local indigenous community members and health providers describing hygiene practices, local travel and safe distancing restrictions, background information on covid-19 and available social support using terminology and cultural examples specific to the region. For example, a 'sorry camp' is special area where visiting relatives would stay when attending a funeral in a community, as communities can be extremely far apart. These are subject to the country-wide limit of a maximum 10 people at funerals current at the time of publication. Remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities are considered to be at higher risk of severe impacts from Covid-19 than the wider population due to their higher level of chronic health issues, frequently crowded households, and long distance from healthcare. The Kimberley region of Western Australia has unique travel restrictions in place to limit movement between the four Shires, in addition to restrictions on movement across different regions of Western Australia and lockdowns of individual indigenous communities. -
