My Annual Newsletter to Friends 2022
I always send a newsletter at the holidays and share whatever I have been thinking about. I want to keep in touch with friends. My newsletters in 2020, 2021, and 2022 were mostly about the pandemic. I would like now to submit the one for 2022. I already submitted the others. -

HIST30068 China’s Zero Covid Policy Story 2
A road near my home in China is closed. Workers are building a wall across the road to stop any travels. This road had much of my childhood memory: it's very close to the “Palace of Culture”, a Sunday School where many kids went to take math, Chinese, English, art or music classes. On the other side of the road there was my favourite noodle soup shop, also closed. -

COVID Share Your Story #RITtigers #6, Business Management Major's Point of view
Because I am a freshman it has not impacted it too much. I was in the 2017 California Thomas Fires and it was a similar experience in terms of education. However, my friend and I are setting up a website (www.communitybonds.us) where brick and mortar businesses who need cash now can sell "bonds". A "bond" is essentially a discounted gift card. Example: You can buy a $100 "bond" to your favorite restaurant for $75 now. The restaurant gets the cash they need now, and you can redeem your bond for its full value in services when they reopen. If we can even make one business owner sleep jut a bit better at night we've done our job. We aren't taking a fee or a cut we just want to help. We hope to be launching in a couple of days but our landing page is up right now. If I could give a message to myself at the start of this semester, what would I say? Be prepared. -

Massachusetts COVID-19 Executive Order No. 44 - Revised Public Gathering Mandate
On July 2, 2020, Governor Charles Baker revised COVID-19 Order No. 38 to exclude businesses designated as "a Phase I, Phase II, or Phase III enterprise" that is allowed to open its environs to workers and the public from gathering restrictions, provided that said businesses are following the state's COVID-19 safety rules. -

Limited Reopenings on Okinawa
Following an outbreak on US Marine Corps facilities on Okinawa, the branch closed down most on-base community services in order to slow the virus's spread. On July 15, some installations cautiously re-opened a select few, although not all bases restored services immediately. Some services resumed with minimal staffing in place, while others only applied to unit training, while others offered a virtual alternative. However, this partial restoration was short-lived, when MCCS shut down the fitness centers the following day. -

Mimi's Cafe & Bakery COVID Cleaning/Sanitation Guides
I work at Mimi's Cafe & Bakery on the weekends as a server. These pictures are the cleaning and sanitation guides for the Front of House (FOH) staff. It's posted next to the main drink station servers use to get drinks for guests. It's an easy reference place and guide for all of the new COVID19 regulations! Mimi's in Columbus, Ohio did close down due to COVID19 in late March and re-opened in early June. My first day back was June 11th, which is the day I took these photographs. -

Different Restaurants. Different Policies
These photographs present two different policy approaches taken by two different west Wichita restaurants. The "patchwork" of policies that came to define the United States' COVID-19 response also manifested itself in individual businesses, with some area restaurants, like Ziggy's Pizza, proclaiming that they're open for both indoor and outdoor service, while several blocks away, Chick-Fil-A's sign declares that their dining room remained closed. Both taken on the same day, these pictures represent the myriad messages and signals given by governments and businesses that added to the confusion and uncertainty that characterized the COVID-19 pandemic in Wichita. -

Does COVID only spread in bars or also in massive riots?
This meme makes fun of the fact that people gathered in huge crowds during the Coronavirus pandemic. This person is portrayed at wondering if COVID only spreads in bars and restaurants or also in massive protests? Because apparently protests are allowed, but bars are closed. The "asking for a friend" part is funny. -

Humans of Covid-19 AU: Hana Assafiri
“At this time of social distancing, I’m looking to create social harmony. That’s what we have always been about. We closed the bar a few weeks before we were told to because, based on what we were seeing and hearing, I believed we were putting our workers in harm’s way. We tried take-away but I wasn’t convinced that was safe. Looking for how we could continue to empower our women through work, while also making a contribution to the community and social justice, we launched into providing meals for frontline health care workers through a pay-it-forward scheme. In some countries they applaud their health care workers, in other countries they sing for them. In Melbourne, it’s all about the food, so it makes sense we feed them! Everything is cause and effect. This pandemic didn’t just ‘happen’, nor was it dropped on us by aliens. It is a consequence of how we live in the world, our disregard for animals and the environment. We must take heed of what got us here and change the conversation, rather than just thinking we are going to ‘snap back’. Our behaviours and attachments came to an abrupt halt. I’m already seeing a change in attitudes. It’s about harnessing this and taking this opportunity to reset our values and activate our citizenship to work towards a more harmonious society. Almost all of those doing the thinking and leading are men. Women know how to heal with heart and compassion. We need to respect that contribution, not take it for granted.” Instagram post on Hanna, owner & manager of Moroccan Soup Bar, and her experience during the pandemic, which was created by a psychology student living in Melbourne who was interested to hear about how COVID-19 was impacting on different peoples’ lives. -

A Quick Getaway
My husband, two daughters and I drove up to Flagstaff, Arizona for a few days of relaxation and fun. Less than 2 hours from our home, Flagstaff is a mountain town and about 30 degrees cooler. As Arizona is opening up the state after the quarantine, there is evidence of safety precautions and practices everywhere. At the hotel, the seating area in the lobby was blocked off, and the free breakfast was a sack breakfast that you requested from the front desk. Even the bar area where there is usually a free happy hour was closed. The front desk staff wore masks, and they even had a sign up suggesting handshake alternatives. Housekeeping staff did not do a daily cleaning as a way to limit contact with guests. While out and about, most stores and restaurants were open, but with new policies in place. Every store and restaurant required masks for customers and had signs stating such at entrances. Some restaurants still only offered takeout, but others had patio space and limited indoor seating available. The first night we had dinner at Beaver Street Brewery and sat outside. We ordered our food at the bar before we were seated, then it was delivered to our table. There was very little interaction between guests and employees. The second night we did takeout from another local place, The Lumberyard, and took it to a local park for a picnic. Stores were limiting customers, requiring masks and encouraging social distancing by having barriers by the cash registers requiring distance between the cashier and the customer. In the downtown area, all public parking meters were covered, so customers could park for free while venturing out to stores and restaurants. The most important recently opened area for our family was the Mt. Humphry trail in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. My husband climbed the mountain while we enjoyed the beautiful weather and scenery. There were no special restrictions on the mountain, but all of the hikers maintained space and were considerate of others. After being at home for so long, getting away for a day or two was wonderful. It also allowed us to get a glimpse of what the next few months could look like, and how we will adjust to lives with masks and restrictions. I refuse to call it a new normal, but a temporary adjustment is just fine. -

New Restaurant Rules
From the inception of the coronavirus crisis, businesses across the spectrum have had to adapt their operating procedures. For restaurants, this proved to be a tricky adaptation. As dining halls closed across the world, restaurants moved towards offering curbside pickup for almost anything that they sold; this included alcoholic beverages. Now, it is not unusual to see advertisements offering up a full pitcher of margaritas or the like, able to be ordered and picked up curbside. -

Cooking at Home
During the pandemic, I learned to cook at home since most of the restaurants are closed and stop the service of dine-in. Also, I think it is unsafe for now to go out frequently so I decided to cook at home. It is fun for me during the epidemic but I miss those delicious restaurants outside. -

Irvine Ramen Restaurant Reopen with Placing Tables Apart to Practice Social Distancing
Photo was taken in HiroNori Craft Ramen, one of earliest restaurants open for dine in in Orange County. Tables are placed apart and you need to scan QR code for menu (They also have disposable menus too). The photo was taken on May 28. But as of today, June 4, it is hardly to see any other restaurants open for dine in in the area. -

Phase 2 Reopening - Restaurants on Santa Barbara State Street
As reopening moves to phase 2, many restaurants have decided to allow to sit in dining. However, since enclosed spaces have a higher risk of virus transmission than outdoor spaces, Santa Barbara city has taken a special approach. Santa Barbara's bustling State Street has been shut down so that restaurants can place their seating, either a part or all of it outside, right on the street. This is a unique scene of people eating at restaurants, but seated on the roads previously meant for cars. -

Phase 2 Reopening - Restaurant Dining Inside
As reopening moved into phase 2, some restaurants decided to allow for dining indoors. This is Noodle City, a Vietnamese restaurant in Goleta. The seating used to be highly packed inside to maximize the number of occupants, but now features more indoor space to separate the guests. Previously it could be found to be packed at almost all times, but even though it is now legal to dine inside, people are still choosing to order take out. People are still cautious of the fact that the virus transmits easier indoors than outdoors. -

Restaurants prepare to open decks, patios but warn "it's not going to make us money"
As more areas of PA open up after being locked down for the last ten weeks, restaurants are having to weigh the advantage of reopening. Restaurants in Central PA are not known for their outdoor patios and decks. Between the humid hot summers and the plentiful bugs, not many people eat outside here. With regulations restricting many restaurants to outdoor sitting only restaurants are having to consider new ways of serving the public. When it comes to food and beverages in PA the coronavirus has had a huge influence on pushing business owners to rethink their traditional business models. Chicago Restaurant Workers Take Extra Covid-19 Precautions
Food workers and restaurants are a part of our communities. They rely on customers from the community and often live in the communities they serve. Making sure that customers are safe is a huge part of the job and as these Chicago food workers showed, they will not wait for mandates to put safety measures in place to protect workers and customers alike. Empty Restaurants
As COVID-19 gaining more and more attention, restaurants begin to close down due to governmental restrictions to prevent public gathering. With the image of empty restaurants with tables and chairs being put up, these restaurants' funding are also slowly going empty. The attention to these restaurants are so important especially during the pandemic because we need these restaurants to survive otherwise all we will have left are food chains such as McDonald's. -
