How the Pandemic Has Changed Teachers' Commitment to Staying in the Classroom
According to the article, there was a 16% national turnover rate for teachers before the pandemic. A survey given in January 2021 shows that almost 25% of teachers stated that they wanted to leave teaching. Pre-pandemic surveys and surveys given during the pandemic also show that less teachers believe that they will stay in education until retirement. The pandemic has required that teachers maintain the same responsibilities, while also piling on constant communication with parents (even without a response), social-emotional lessons, plans for asynchronous and synchronous learning, teaching students virtually and in-person at the same time, keeping up with changing health and safety regulations, and having to deal with increasing behavior issues. -

Locked In and Locked Down: Surviving COVID-19 in FCI Edgefield BOP
The COVID-19 crisis has impacted mass incarcerated facilities at an exceeding rate, exacerbating existing staffing shortage and leaving those housed in large numbers increasingly vulnerable to COVID-19. The Federal Correctional Institution in Edgefield, South Carolina is no exception to this hardship. FCI Edgefield has be forced to expand its use of a practice called "augmentation" or allowing those in non-correctional roles at the prison to work in correctional officer roles. This is because staff members are getting sick an exceedingly high rate, causing some staff to have quarantine for several days while others have chosen to retire early out of the fear of high exposure and incentives losing way due to the crisis. Since the pandemic has taken off, only a small number of inmates have died from COVID-19, about 50 in total. Yet, due to less experienced staff on site due to shortages, one inmate died due to undermined symptoms on January 27, 2021. Overall, stories like these are important because they show how state officials, lawmakers, and policymakers have made little strides in reducing and slowing down the spread of the coronavirus in state and national prison systems. People like my mother, who works at FCI Edgefield, have preexisting medical conditions that put them at a heightened risk for complications if they were to catch COVID-19. Thus, we should make aware that these state officials have waited too long to make strides towards reducing the prison population, routinely rotating staff, and increasing social distance measures in the jail populations. As the pandemic wears on, much is still needed to be done in prioritizing staff and prison populations for vaccination matters. While this idea has generated some wide societal debate, I find it hard to argue that people who work and live in correctional facilities are at a major disadvantage in this crisis. Therefore, it is only fair to consider these high-risk groups first when prioritizing phases and measures of the vaccines and health and well-being. -

Back in combat boots
I retired from the Army in September 2019 after serving for 26 years. My wife and I moved to South Texas to finally settle down, and in January of 2020 we bought our forever home out in the country near Lake Corpus Christi. Clearing the land and unpacking boxes that had been sealed for what seems like an eternity took about three months. Around late March/early April I started applying for jobs at colleges in the area, just as the pandemic was gaining national attention. As a result, no one was conducting interviews or hiring. I did not need to work, I just wanted something to keep me busy. Out of the blue, I was contacted by the U.S. Army Human Resources command to ask if I would volunteer to return to Active Duty for a year to help with the pandemic. After discussing it with my wife, I replied back that I would volunteer and provide whatever assistance I could. In June I received orders to report to Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in early July. The orders also stated that I was to report in my uniform. I had kept my old uniform from when I retired, but it took a bit of digging around to find everything. Putting my uniform and boots on after almost two years of retirement felt strange yet familiar. I had to get to used to the feeling of wearing combat boots again instead of regular shoes. For the next year I was assigned to U.S. Army North at Fort Sam Houston, where we coordinated Department of Defense civil support operations all over America. I also helped with the planning, organization, and execution for a large vaccination site on the installation. I was not the only veteran that returned to active duty. Like me, others volunteered to do what we could to help get through this pandemic. I enjoyed the time I spent back in the Army, and felt like I made a positive contribution to the country. The only thing that took time to get used to was the feeling of combat boots on my feet again. -

Nursing schools response to Covid
Covid-19 and the pandemic has had a significant impact on the healthcare industry. Healthcare providers that were nearing retirment had a good reason to retire early, and many others that felt the job became too dangerous or mentally taxing left the medical field forever due to Covid-19. The numbers of nurses have suffered as a result, and that means that during the worst healthcare crisis in recent history, the nurses that were working had even more burden placed on them by staffing problems. This article explains the ways in which nursing schools have responded to try and get more people into the field. -

While the federal government put effort into getting residents and staff at nursing and retirement homes vaccinated, many remain unvaccinated. Some states even have less than a third percent of the staff vaccinated. This has impacted reopening timelines for the facilities and fears of spreading COVID-19. -

There is not so much direct question and answer but over the course of a somewhat rambling conversation pretty much all the topics get covered. Although she remains pretty spry for her age, there are some places where she loses the thread or misunderstands the conversation. -

Mrs. Wall who is in the senior demographic herself talks about providing care for elderly residents while living in a retirement community herself (however, the community she lives in is just for seniors 55+, the one she works for has nurses and staff around to help residents, where she lives does not). Please note, due to the familiar nature between the two, Mrs. Wall will refer to Mrs. Bailey as "Larissa" or "Riss" at times (this is just Mrs. Bailey's middle name/a nickname for it). -

Emotional Toll
I work at a prominent community college in California. When we first started hearing about the virus we took precautions right away in the office. First those employees over 65 were sent home to work remotely, because they were identified early on as being a risk group. Then we decided as a college to take all of the on ground classes and convert them to online for the remainder of the spring semester. Shortly after that, most all of the faculty and students were sent home to shelter in place. Those remaining were the lab classes in the industrial arts area and some CTE programs. Staff remained on campus and weeks went by as we continued to operate the college. Slowly staff were asked to work remotely from home, taking their work home with them. Division Offices remained open, as did the IT and Facility areas. The community continued to walk in the door with concerns and questions. Some of us felt we were at risk of infection, because no one really knew much about the virus at this point. I personally felt the effects of stress building. We were asked if we would like to begin working from home in mid-March by our supervisor, but there still wasn’t a directive from the District, so I was concerned. I took work home and my plants, not knowing if and when I would return, because of my age; almost 62. I worked remotely for seven days and then over the next weekend I became incapacitated, due to stress not only regarding the virus, family dynamics, elder care and stress of trying to do my work from a makeshift home office. I was out of the office for nine weeks, while my doctors prescribed slow acting medicines. I came out of my depressed state and now there are still so many things we don’t know about the virus. Besides the toll on me physically and emotionally I also saw a huge chunk of my retirement disappear, as the stock market tumbled. $40K lost out of one account alone. At my age I’ll likely never recover. I expect there will be fallout in other areas as well. While we were all wondering where we could go to buy toilet paper and disinfectant wipes, airlines were parking their planes, car rentals were parking their fleets and the housing market became a whole new game. Where will this all end up is anyone’s guess. What it has done is, the virus has been the great equalizer. Were all in this together. It knows no boundaries except that seniors appear to be the hardest hit group and are accounting for the largest percentage of deaths. On a personal note, I have not been able to meet my new grandson who was born on Mother’s Day because of Covid risk concerns my daughter has and I have to respect that and meet him over the Internet. My own Mom is 81 and will no longer accept a hug from me. It’s just sad. Dianne Nau -
