My Personal Pandemic Experience
In March, 2020, a global pandemic started. Before that, jokes were made. "Coronavirus is going to take out the whole world". When the month of March began, most people were confused or very strongly opinionated about what was going to happen. It was the news of all news. Rumors got worse and worse and it was said that you could get the virus through your eyeballs, nose, and mouth. People got scared of getting sick so the world completely changed. Masks started arising with the thought that they'd slow the spread. Shortly after, however, masks became very political. In the world of demanding masks, canceling school, major political conflict and complete chaos I felt worried, annoyed, angered, and most of all disappointed in and for what the world became. -

Covid Rice and Beans Stock Use
When Covid hit in late February/early March, wide-spread food shortage rumors started to circulate everywhere. The news, social media, friends and family, and seemingly everyone continuously talked about the likely shortages that were going to start to take place. For a good week or two in March, it almost felt possible that our networks for food supply could be shut down, which resulted in everyone stocking up on certain items. One of the few things that I picked up was a big bag of brown rice and a pack of 15 cans of black beans. I hid those away in case the worst would happen. Now, nearly a year later, I am using those supplies and reflecting on the unprecedented panic that was going on at the time that I purchased these items. -

What I think started Covid-19
I dont really know the exact reasoning because I myself dont really watch the news and even if i did there is to much fake news that i see on tiktok and what other people tell me. I have heard rumors that vary from someone at a bat that they put the virus into and i have also heard rumors like it was made by people kinda like a sabotage so i cant really know what the real one is. If you look it up its says that the bat one is rights but no one will really know whats real and whats fake. -

The beginning of COVID
What I first learned about COVID-19 was that it was a flu created by people eating Bats in China. I heard that from social media. But then I heard those rumors were false. Now I think COVID was made by china in a lab to destroy America. -

Pre- Covid, By a teenage girl in 2020
Hello, I am a 14-year-old girl in 2020. Before the virus hit the United States it was really normal. I got up at 7:30, went to school, got home at 2:55, then went to swimming practice. Me and my friends already knew that this was not going to be a normal year. Before covid, a few other things happened. Australia burnt down and World war 3 almost started. This happened in a really short amount of time. The first time I heard about the virus is when the kids on a school field trip to Italy came back. None of them were sick, but they got out of there just before Italy shut down. There were a few rumors about how the virus started. At first, I heard it was from a snake then I heard it was because someone in China ate a bat. The second one turned out the be true. I was not really worried about the virus at first because I thought that China would have the common sense to lock down their country the second they realized how bad it was and how quickly it spreads, but no of course they don't. Before my school shut down I was at a golf tournament for school. Some of the other school teams did not come because their school had already gotten shut down. On the fourth hole, some of the girls on the other team got an email from the school that they were going to shut down. At that point, I started to get a little worried. By the end of the round, I felt a buzz in my pocket. I knew exactly what it was about, and so did everyone else. -

A day in my life during a pandemic
So when this whole thing started people knew what it was but no one really thought of it. Nothing really changed besides that people started to use sanitizer and things like that to stay clean. After a while there were rumors that things were going to close down. Then those rumors became true, school started to go online and everything started to close down. People were buying toilet paper and necessities and it was hard to find those things in any stores, masks were mandated and everything was closed and we were on a mandatory lockdown. I am a person that loves going to restaurants and taking out food just wasn't good, so i was trying to make food a lot at my house and I have almost burnt down my house multiple times. Life was really boring and you couldn’t see friends or family. U would facetime with relatives and friends all the time because of this. That is basically what happened from my perspective of the pandemic. -

Fear of the Unknown
Although I have been fortunate enough to say that no one in my family has contracted the virus thus far, that's not to say that it hasn't had an impact. Since the discovery of the virus, there has been an abundance of mixed information, terrifying rumors, and confusing data. There have been times when one could think there was nothing to worry about, and other times when one could feel uncomfortable leaving his/her home. Overall, the most terrifying part for me is all the things we don't know about what's going on. Along with that, is not knowing when you or a family member might have it. I'm sure we have all had our scares during this crisis, but one in particular really frightened me. My dad has been in and out of hospitals for over 5 years now, and it has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me and my twin sister. The most recent time he was in the hospital, he was transferred from my small hometown to a hospital here in Phoenix. In his condition, and after everything he has lived through, we knew that he would not survive if he contracted the virus. It sounds pessimistic, but if I were to go in-depth about his medical history, anyone would agree. With that being said, we were terrified about him being in a major phoenix hospital at the peak of the pandemic. Not to mention the medical facilities he would have to regularly go to after the fact. So far, he has not contracted the virus, but the stress remains present even more so than it has been in the past. Sometimes the stress and concern that these types of disaster causes are just as impactful as the disaster itself, and COVID-19 has proved that to be true. -

Retirement in the Rumour File
My Dad used to listen to the rumour file every morning for work, I remember one time he had to work all day on something that broke on the rumour file that morning. As I've tried to be setting a new routine and waking up early, I've been listening a lot to Ross and (recently) Russell in the morning. It's nice to use live radio to feel connected during this lockdown, particularly when AW is so Melbourne based. I'm nowt alone either I think their ratings have gone up something like 30%. This guy rang up with a rumour about a former number one draft pick retiring this week. As a Carlton Fan and a receiver of many a failed number one draft picks, I thought it had to be one of ours. Sure enough, a few hours later news broke that Matthew Kreuzer was retiring. Another draft pick hampered by injury that never hit his prime into the Carlton graveyard. I still even now think of Kreuz as a pimply eighteen year old. At least I got to break the news to my mates and feel ahead of the curve, and the rumour file is really helping me get through. -

Analyzing the Coronavirus Rumor Mill, news story
Jon Lee, English, examines social phenomena such as conspiracy theories and fake "cures" that arise during times of widespread illness. "We essentially have two different narratives running in an epidemic," Lee says. "One is the official medical narrative, which tells you where [the disease] came from, when a vaccine might be possible. But you also have the cultural narrative, which runs alongside--but often counter to--the medical narrative." -

Chairman of the Pala Band of Mission Indians Encourages Community Not to Spread Rumors and Misinformation
“The County of San Diego has reported today, April 22, 2020, that there is one confirmed positive case of COVID-19 in the area covered by Pala’s zip code, 92059. By law, the County is not able to provide any identifying information about who this individual is, where they live, or their current health status (i.e. hospitalized, quarantined at home, etc.)…The dots on that map are not associated with any specific address; rather, they are placed in the geographic center of the area the zip code covers. Therefore, the dot on the map for Pala is not indicating where the confirmed positive individual lives…I encourage you not to spread rumors or misinformation about this case or make any attempt to discover who the confirmed positive individual may be. This is private information that none of us has, and spreading rumors only serves to stir up fear and panic.” #IndigenousStories -
