Working during a Pandemic
For my first artifact, I chose a photo taken in April 2020 of me wearing a sign telling people to stay six feet away at Agway of Cape Cod in Dennis, MA. It is shocking to think about now, but at this time I was not required to wear a face mask while at work. I have worked at Agway for several years and am familiar with the business, products, and customers. However, the experience I had at Agway this past spring was drastically different than what I was used to. Agway had implemented a curbside pick-up only method, meaning customers were no longer allowed to shop in person. This was very difficult for a lot of people, especially considering the elderly demographic that frequented Agway. Many customers were confused or angry about the system, despite its implementation as a method of protecting the health and safety of everyone – employees and customers alike. Agway had never before offered an online shopping option, but they quickly went to work creating a website complete with thousands of products to ensure the simplest and safest means of acquiring essential items like pet supplies that Agway provides for residents of Cape Cod. As a cashier, a typical sale during early COVID-19 times included a customer calling the store, the customer waiting on hold for anywhere between 30 seconds and 15 minutes for the next available employee, the customer listing their items for cashiers to “pick,” paying with card only over the phone, and finally an employee delivering the items to numbered parking spots. Needless to say, this process was a lot to handle and grow accustomed to, and was often very frustrating and stressful as both customers and employees learned together as humans how we were to alter our lives and routines in response to an unprecedented global pandemic. -

大型セール“ブラックフライデー”仏で1週間延期へ(2020年11月21日) - Large sale "Black Friday" postponed for one week in France (November 21, 2020)
In France, where strict outing restrictions are in place, it has been decided to postpone the big Black Friday sale for a week. In France, many small and medium-sized retail stores have been closed due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. On the other hand, major online shopping companies such as Amazon are still in business, and retailers have been complaining that the Black Friday sale will start on the 27th. In response, the government announced on the 20th that it will postpone the big Black Friday sale for a week from the 27th and allow retailers to reopen by then. Video translated by Youngbin Noh -

A Different Kind of Adventure (But an Adventure all the Same)
I wanted to use this collection of photos to highlight the change of attitude and environment for friendships pre-Covid and during Covid: In the first three photos my college friends and I are out and about a major city and public transportation, giving no second thoughts on sanitary factors. For us, an adventure meant exploring the city limits and beyond. In the next photos, taken after most of us returned from our respective universities and finished a serious quarantine. We finally reunited, though barely leaving our home limits, after being locked inside for weeks, it felt like an adventure; Despite the need for much caution and unfamiliar form of socializing. We cherished each other’s company in this new way of hanging out. Finally, the last photos were taken later in the summer. Out of quarantine but still amid a pandemic, we found adventure were found in something as ordinary as grocery shopping or trying something different like eating fast food in the trunk of a car. -

Mom and Aunt's new plan for Christmas shopping in the era of COVID19
This is a text my aunt sent to my cousins and me after she and my mom devised a new way to do Christmas shopping during the era of COVID19. They decided to forgo their usual Christmas shopping tradition because of the pandemic. Usually, the entire family spends a whole day going shopping together at various stores like Barnes and Noble or Kohls. My family makes a real day of it! However, this year my mother and aunt chose to do their Christmas shopping from home. To maintain as traditional a shopping experience as possible, they decided to ask my cousins, sister, and I to put together a list of items available on Amazon from which they would choose our gifts. This way, no one would have to leave their homes, and what we got for Christmas could still be a bit of a surprise! -

Macao, 2020
I traveled to Macao in October 2020 for a family issue. Macao has lifted all the restrictions in late September and enabled travelers from China, mainland to enter the city with a covid-19 test report that was done within 7 days. Before the pandemic, Macao was one of the most popular places to travel for travelers all around the world, but now you could count how many people are on the street. The picture was taken in The Venetian, a luxury hotel with the largest shopping center in Macao, and a casino. Usually, the place is crowded with shoppers, people gambling in the casino, enjoying their vacations. I believe no one has ever seen this place is so empty as now, and no one knows when it will recover from the pandemic and the shopping center will be crowded again. -

Lethargic Lockdown
HIST30060 - In reviewing this 'plague' year, I feel that there can be no simple way of explaining the whirlwind of emotions that seemed to fluctuate just as readily and sporadically as our daily covid- case numbers did back in April and May. My first uploaded image is a photograph I took of a note that was found in our letterbox in Balwyn, which we received on the 7th of April. Later we discovered it was made by two younger girls who lived at the bottom of our street, who had been writing similar letters for all our neighbours too! I felt it was very important in this unprecedented time to cherish the small acts of kindness, particularly given the emotional state of lockdown. Despite their relative insignificance, it is these small communal acts which I will cherish, which keep us connected to those around us, while ironically social distancing at the same time. Similarly, the young sisters who made the card are the same age as my niece, 9 years old. I often look at this card and think of how their youth has been irrevocably changed in this pandemic. My second image is a photo I took of Mills beach in Mornington on the 31st of July. I think it will always remind me of the occasion where I snuck down to the Beach, on the premise of doing some 'maintenance' at a family property, which was what I explained to the police who were patrolling the highway. My father has had his bouts with pneumonia in the past, so the family decided that if he could conduct his work from home, then it would be best to get of Melbourne. So my mum and dad were staying down the in Mornington from late March and came back to Melbourne around the start of November. Although we would routinely call eachother on zoom, this photo in a way commemorates the time where I had to sneak down to the beach in order to see them. Though a beautiful sunset at mills beach, there also is a sense of morbid beauty and unease to the photo. It was the only time I think I have ever seen such beautiful weather and calm water, with no boats or people in sight. The third image is a screenshot from a facebook invitation to a party which was created in early March. The guys that made the group event had originally planned to host a get together by December. I think in a sense this does give some explanation in regards to the expectations of corona, and the hysteria that was surrounding it in early March. I think as explained in the screenshot, although we didn't know what to expect, all we did know was that "the next few months are gonna be very long." Recently they updated the invitation from a party that will maybe happen in March next year. Although it may be some form of normality to look forward to, I think that this year more than any other we have learnt to prepare for the worst. Though it is currently listed to go ahead around March next year, part of me thinks it will be delayed again. My fourth image is a screenshot I took from an instagram page called "melb_lockdown," which was created in early April this year. It is an instagram page that features many artful collections of the Melbourne CBD area in black and white photographs. As one who often indulges in photography myself, I think the artist behind the instagram page is always trying to send a message with his work. I think what strikes me most is naturally seeing images of one of the 'most liveable' cities in the world, which is now devoid of the very things that have have given the city it's -claim-to-fame.' The once frenetic energy and vibrancy of the busy Melbourne CBD is now lifeless, colourless, and painfully mundane. My last image, is a meme that a friend of mine sent me. Similarly it is a an Instagram page called 'Covid 19 Funny Memes.' Though very funny, it also highlights a lot of the communal attitudes that have fluctuated and changed through out the pandemic. In late February/ early March, I believe that because it the pandemic was largely still a distant story that was affecting Europe more readily and Australia, it was something we really engaged in a kind of hysteria with. Because we hadn't experienced it, it was something we couldn't truly understand. Certainly these sought of humorous memes were not being created back then. But now I feel having lived with the pandemic for the last 8-9 months, people's attitudes have altered so much. I think because we are now more prepared to satirise, mock or create humorous memes is not to suggest that we have become apathetic towards the pandemic, but I think it shows that we are 'over it.' I think now living with this shadow over our lives for 8 months has taken its toll, and humour may be one way we can attempt to disassociate ourselves from this monotonous cycle. -

Eagerness to Celebrate
HIST30060. My first journey to the city after months of staying within 5km of my own home, you begin to take for granted the daily trips to university, the train and tram rides, and being around other people. I got to go to shops I haven't been to before and have discovered during lockdown as well as food that I have missed dearly and was a welcome change after so much monotony and repetition. These places were bouncing back after months of hardship and everyone seemed so keen to participate in society again. It's a first step towards normality, and I believe nothing speaks to that greater than seeing Christmas decorations on Halloween. It was October, and there was a giant Christmas tree in QV. Not many superficial things cause me to seethe, but it was over 50 days until Christmas. However, it's an annoying but nice way to demonstrate that there's a level of hope among everyone with the December holidays being a point in the future that everyone in Victoria holds dear. We hope that we will be able to travel interstate to visit friends and family for Christmas, that we can have gatherings at home around a BBQ celebrating Christmas and the holidays, but also the love we share for one another and the joy at being able to be together again. I believe this year will be the only one where I will not mind as much to see these decorations so early, as they demonstrate hope and a return to everything we know and love. -

Going to The Market During COVID-19
During the COVID-19 pandemic the only time most people left there houses was to go to a market to get food once and awhile. In my house one person would go once a week and everyone always wanted to be the person to go. We would have a shopping list that everyone would write what they wanted and the person selected would have to get everything on the list. During to the market it felt like no one was on earth anymore. The roads were empty with no one insite. The markets were the busiest place so they had to restrict the number of people inside at once. While inside the market everything felt so dirty because you would constantly think about “was this touched by someone who had COVID.” This is important to remember because this is the only place people went during the pandemic and it made them happy just to get out of the house. -

Store Shutdowns
March 13, 2020 started off a normal day. I went to school and listened to all the conversations about COVID and possible school shutdowns. After school my friends and I went to Target but little did I know that the next time I would visit a store would be completely different. A few days later I went to the grocery store with my family. It was a shocking sight when I walked in and seen everyone with a mask on and shelves completely empty. It was like an apocalypse was among us. Everyone was running rampid, pushing their carts as fast as possible and had a mask on all in the process. I had to feel everything through my rubber gloves and had a hard time smelling anything through my mask. Our new normal is wearing mask, social distancing and putting on hand sanitizer every second possible. This is important to share because it shows how COVID has shaped the way we live today. -

Face Masks. Corona Virus Media
This media is a photograph of several shoppers leaving Walmart all within 6 feet of each other and wearing face masks. I chose this image because I work in retail and experience and enforce this requirement on a daily basis. The reality of wearing face masks while completing everyday tasks is still something that I personally am getting used to. Face masks create a barrier especially in the workplace because it makes it difficult to communicate with customers and coworkers. When working in retail stores you are supposed to create and maintain a connection with the customer in order to push sales. This is difficult to do when wearing a face mask because you have a difficult time speaking and maintaining a distance while shopping, selling, and cashiering multiple customers. -

Social Distance
2. A simple sticker has now become such an important concept in my current life. At first, I remember seeing them and thinking that this measure was a little extreme and really not needed. Now, my whole mindset has changed. At stores, I am now that person that dislikes if you’re too close to me. It makes me feel like I’m covered with germs if we have to squeeze by each other in an aisle. If I’m paying for something and you’ve already started unloading your items in your cart to pay and moving near me, it makes me feel very disrespected. Something so small such as personal space is now a thing that I think about every day. While at times it helps me to feel safe, it also impacts my personal life too. Things like random hugs, hanging out with friends, playing soccer, or just being able to touch another human being. Socially distancing represented by this small sticker has taken over how I live my life. -

A Mad Panic
My girlfriend and I took a trip to Sedona, Arizona, during ASU's spring break this past year. There was a good amount of news regarding the rising pandemic, but it didn't seem to scare us too much at this point. ASU sent out an email stating that classes were under the question of returning after spring break, but we didn't take it all too seriously, thinking this whole thing would blow over as Ebola did. We had an amazing time and enjoyed dining and shopping at all of the fine shops and restaurants in Sedona. We didn't have a care in the world. We just enjoyed each other's company and enjoyed the many sights of Sedona. As we were packing up to return home, my girlfriend's parents called us in a panic that all of the grocery stores surrounding their home were empty or close to empty. There were no paper products, and the food isles were nearly cleaned out. We had not prepared for this at all. We just didn't think that we needed to prepare for Covid-19. On the way home, we stopped at every single grocery store, Walmart, convenience store, and target to find much of the same thing... people by the hundreds stocking up on everything in the grocery store. We got as much as we could and rushed home to consolidate our goods with her parents to find that we needed to make another trip tonight. We barely had anything to prepare for the virus, and that led to a stressful few nights of stocking up as much on as we could find. This marked the start of the panic, but we didn't even know for sure that we should be panicking about the virus. A few days later, the announcement came that school would be going online for the next few weeks. A week after the announcement from ASU, the president shut down the country. This was the start of the quarantine, and it still feels like we are quarantining to this day. -

One of my friends had a basket full of Monster Energy Drinks, and the other had armfuls of boxed pasta. -

"Well that settles it! I'm never grocery shopping on a Saturday!"
This past Saturday, I went to the craft store at the local strip mall with my mom. I needed yarn to knit some lace onto a project I have going and she, upon hearing this, called a single 93 year old lady we do the shopping for during the pandemic and asked if she would like any yarn since she knits too, and she did. It was 1 pm when we were there and the line to get into the local Loblaws grocery store was the longest I have ever seen it. I counted at least 14 families in line, which would mean it would likely take them as much 30 mins to an hour to get into the store. The other notable fact about the line is that it contained multiple children. Up until recently the policy was that only one individual per household was allowed in the store at a time and parents were not allowed to bring in children. As this policy has react parents and guardians, according to my mom who does our groceries, have started bringing their small children, sometimes in groups of 4 or 5. There are two sides to this of course, because firstly, many do not have the childcare to do others but the children often do not understand or observe social distancing in the stores. As we drove around to leave and saw the line my mom exclaimed "Well that settles it! If ever I was tempted I am not doing groceries on a Saturday! No matter how desperate we are! It is never that busy on weekdays!" -

Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek. March 2020
A Campolindo HS photography class assignment was to take photos of some nearby location that tells a story. My senior decided to procrastinate and ended up needing to complete the assignment during the early days of quarantine. A trip to a normally very busy Broadway Plaza shopping center in Walnut Creek on a Saturday turned out to be the perfect location. The only people we saw out there was a man and his son riding bikes past this center fountain area. In one of the pictures, you'll see the Apple store in the distance, completely dark and vacant. It looks like a ghost town. It's not this vacant even on holidays recognized by retail stores. -

Costco Lines Are Outta Control!
When the pandemic hit, and even just before, people ran to the stores and cleared out all the cleaning supplies, bottled water, hand sanitizer, canned food, rice and beans, rubbing alcohol, toilet paper, and paper towels. Costco is a big membership warehouse store with large quantities and good prices, so people flocked there. This video is typical of all of Southern California's Costco lines. The lines circled around the entire 150,000 square foot store! We watched the news footage in amazement. Shot by journalist @mrmarkpotts for the LA Times. I cut off the last few minutes and sped it up to 250%, but it took him 7 minutes to walk down the line. The apocalypse was surely nigh! -

The COVID-19 outbreak in China during Chinese New Year. Everyone forces to stay at home during this period. They only can get out home when they need to buy some food to eat. An opportunity for e-commerce in China
I found that during the pandemic, all the e-commerce sites or APPs in China have launched their special theme about fighting against the coronavirus. In this special theme, they would display various kinds of products, like masks, liquid soap, hand sanitizer, disposable gloves and so forth. Since Chinese people were required not to go out at that time, some e-commerce APPs also have promotions about toilet papers, about fast noodles and so forth. They were very sensitive and seized the opportunities to develop their businesses. -

The Necessities
I live on Long Island, in New York. I was stopped at a traffic light and happened to see this sign for “The Barn”. The Barn is a drive through grocery store and there are several of them on Long Island. Usually the sign advertises ice cream, milk, eggs. This day, the important items are “masks, Duraflame, White Castle”. I thought that this was an odd combination of necessities, and if I had seen this sign at any other time I would be confused. But it sadly made perfect sense to me. Masks because we can’t go anywhere without them. Duraflame because people are at home and enjoying fires. And White Castle because fast food restaurants are closed or deemed unsafe. This sign made me sad - because of what it said, and because I understood it. Walmart Uses Detailed Floor Signs to Alert Customers of Social Distancing Rules During COVID-19.
Numerous floor signs depicting rules for social distancing were observed in the Newcastle, Oklahoma Walmart. Of these floor signs, four different designs were displayed. Each of these signs are focused on alerting customers and directing foot traffic to encourage social distancing during COVID-19. The long blue signs were placed along high foot traffic areas to remind customers of the 6 Foot Social Distancing rules. Other signs were displayed at the ends of aisles directing shoppers to enter (green) on designated ends and exit out (red - do not enter) on the other end. The traffic rules were displayed throughout the store. The smaller blue square signs mark social distancing areas in the checkout sections. This checkout floor signs designate stop points for shoppers to wait at, allowing six feet gaps between each customer. Contributed by Clinton P. “Overall, I would say it hasn't affected my faith in a negative way."
“Overall, I would say it hasn't affected my faith in a negative way. I've heard from a lot of people. They have different opinions on why this situation is happening. For example, I've heard people say that it's God's judgement.I've heard people say it's kind of a wake-up call to help us recognize how we should be living differently but.. I don't think... I mean both of those are probably valid in anyone's beliefs but personally in mine I think it's just a good way to recognize how we can work together through this and grow from this and kind of put ourselves in a better perspective rather than worrying about daily things.” -

Journal entry 5/4/2020
taken from journal entry: Today I woke up around 1 pm without an actual schedule to follow it feels like i have no routine.I have been falling asleep around 3 am and waking up very late. Never thought i would say this but i miss going to school and having busy days and crowded commutes. Things i would complain about i now yearn for. I went to Walmart today and looking around at everyone with their masks and gloves, i never thought id ever see anything like this. my trip to the grocery has now become one of the most exciting parts of the day. Going out now is such a hassle we put on masks and gloves and coming back we take everything off immediately and take a shower. All the groceries we brought back my mom will thoroughly wash and throw away original packaging. Later i went for a run in rock creek, there were quite a lot of people there but everyone maintains distance and has their masks on. At night i did a lot of online work i had. without going to class i barely have any motivation to do it. in one of my classes i had a 100% now i have dropped down to a 70%. Good thing we have the pass/fail option at my university, thats the only thing saving me right now. Then i stayed up with my dad binge watching series on netflix until about 2:30 am. i really hope we go back to normal, i miss seeing my friends, my girlfriend, going out to eat or to the movies. My best hope right now is that we go back to classes when the fall semester begins. -
