School in the Era of the Pandemic
Going around the school, there are signs and posters scattered around the entire vicinity, requiring masks and social distancing. Prior to any of these events, people were constantly together, with no masks, crowded rooms, etc. Now it is crazy to even fathom that I've been to a concert with thousands of people bumping into each other. Although this seems like a generic topic to discuss, I'm sure in the future it will seem so inconceivable. -

Won't You Be My Stranger
Before Covid-19 descended upon Chicago, Ukrainian Village was a neighborhood of friends and acquaintances. The threat of illness has suspended neighborly activities. The neighbor whose door this belongs to has a beagle named Molly I used to pet on her walks. Now Molly and I keep our distance, lest her owner or I get sick. It’s demoralizing not to be able to trust people, not because of any personal shortcoming, but because of the potential that one of our health be jeopardized. The status friend and acquaintance has been supplanted by temporary stranger. -

Bike Trail Pandemic Safety
This is a picture of a sign to “Please Wear A Mask” by one of the entrances of to my hometown’s bike path. Originally a local place by the local lake to take family and have a nice picnic, go on a brisk walk, or have a fun ride on your bike, the trail is a place where most locals congregate. Due to COVID-19, this local spot has grown a lot of attraction because when people have nothing else to do, they take up nature as their past time. However, this sign was placed to remind people that the pandemic is still real and all around us, and that people should still stay safe while partaking in a fun past time. Having these warnings out in public spaces help people keep a sense of mindfulness of others as they continue on their own endeavors of their day to day lives as we all try to live though a pandemic that has shaken the core of how people do live. -

Warning Signs
Since this semester is all online, I have been living at home in NH instead of at school in Boston. Since this is the case, I am able to continue working where I was at over the summer in VT. At the beginning of the pandemic when you would cross into VT you would see one of those big orange construction signs stating that if you come to visit VT you should quarantine for fourteen days at home. Alongside the sign would be someone in a DOT truck watching the traffic. Sometime between yesterday, November 17th, 2020, and today, November 18th, 2020, the state of Vermont added these permanent signs at all the crossings in and out of the state. It really brings together how much of a lasting impact this virus has had on the world and that this is something that is not going anywhere anytime soon. -

Together we can protect St. Mary's University
Together we can protect St. Mary's University! Signs like these are in place to remind students at St. Mary's University to remember the new COVID19 safety guidelines put in place to protect the university and the St. Mary's Community. The signs remind students to wear their masks, keep their social distance (about six feet), to wash their hands, to use hand sanitizing stations placed around campus for their health and safety, and to mind the direction they walk in public areas like dorm hallways or large public spaces. -

Chaplain Reassures Long-Term Care Workers in Minnesota
I found this image attached to an AARP article titled “How to Track COVID-19 Nursing Home Cases and Deaths in Your State.” The chaplain is holding a sign that reads, “You are not alone. You are loved.” The chaplain is expressing his faith through an act of service and love: supporting the frontline workers. It is a generous gesture, and one that I am sure resonates with the senior citizens at the care facility as well as their caretakers. -

Roadtrip
This is a picture of my husband from our trip to Chimney Rock, North Carolina. We had not left our city of Charleston for months due to Covid, but decided to take a small trip for my 30th birthday. The entire time we were playing tourist, we wore our masks and did our best to social distance. In the area we stayed, there were signs everywhere that explicitly said, "You must wear your mask" or "Masks are required". However, many people chose not to wear them or had them on incorrectly. It was a little odd being around so many people during this time, but we made the best of it. -

The Empty Strip
This picture was taken while my family and I were driving on the empty strip. It was such an eerie feeling that there was no people on the streets and barely any cars. All of the signs said something along the lines of stay safe, we’ll be back soon. In the picture you can see that the sign says “Stay safe and we’ll get through this together”. All the casinos were closed because the government had to take leadership and try to prevent the spread of corona. -

Approaching another Civil War?
A friend took this picture of her neighbors’ house. It’s a duplex shared by two families- one that supports Trump and one that supports Biden. It’s hard to ignore the feeling of impending civil war here in the US these days. The political polarization only continues to get worse. It’s starting to seem like no matter what the result of the Nov 2020 election is, this division will not be remedied. Perhaps the worst part is that preserving the union doesn’t even seem as important as escaping “the other half.” The only thing that makes me want to work to keep the country together (not that I can make much difference) is the fact that there are vulnerable folks living in Red states who would be made even more vulnerable if the Blue states left the union or joined Canada or whatever other flippant solutions are bandied about. -

What would you do if we could turn back time before COVID-19?
What would you do if we could turn back time to a period before COVID-19? Asking this question today could possibly lead to many answers. Unfortunately, life, as we know it, has drastically changed as conditions have worsened. The COVID-19 pandemic has definitely changed the lives of so many people, and throughout this period many have experienced various overwhelming emotions. My life personally had been turned upside down from the start. Before the initial start of this pandemic, I was a seventeen-year-old girl working two jobs, a varsity cheerleading co-captain, an AP and honors student pertaining to various extracurriculars, and was about to make the most important decision of my life regarding my college education. As much as I was overwhelmed throughout this period I was determined to keep going regardless. But in a short span of time, after that, I had lost my two jobs and the remainder of my senior year in high school. The rapidness of these events had definitely taken a toll on my mental state of mind not knowing what came next. While the weeks continued we were all placed under quarantine not being able to leave our homes unless for essential purposes. The world had completely shut down in such a short period of time. And with much contemplation among myself, it took a period of time until I was able to completely adjust to what seemed to be a new lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect in the next couple of months left me in a state of cluelessness, and to think that others can relate to this feeling as well. So with selecting this phrase, “Has anyone tried unplugging 2020 for 10 seconds and plugging it back in?” Is such a critical way to ask what would we do take back ten seconds to what used to be our normal life? And as much as I would want to return to relive all my experiences that I have lost due to this pandemic, this time of isolation has served me for a time of revaluation of my own personal values. While many hepatic issues are happening in this world right now, I personally think that this time is what you make out of it while that be a positive or negative change in your life. As will never know what life will bring us next. -

Visiting Older Loved Ones Through A Window
COVID-19 has forced us to innovate visiting loved ones. A common way to get around not being able to see family and friends in long or short term care facilities is talking to them through a window. In this case, a woman stands outside a window wearing gloves and a sign saying "Bob I love you very much!!" and uses a cell phone to talk to Bob. -

Together But Apart
This west Wichita sign reflects the coronavirus paradox that has been thrust upon communities across the world since the pandemic's outbreak, as people supposedly face this crisis together, but must maintain physical separation to do so. Also highlighted is the "6 feet rule" that has become an omnipresent feature in most or all public spaces, as social distancing became one of the most effective ways to limit the virus's community transmission. -

A New and Uncertain School Year
The marquee along Maple Street, Wichita, Kansas, for Benton Elementary School urges parents to enroll their children now in what many thought would be a challenging school year. In late July, the Wichita school board delayed the start of the school year until after Labor Day in order to give faculty and staff more time to adjust their curriculum to more flexible models, clean facilities, and set up necessary shields, barriers, and social distancing measures. Despite the mandate requiring these measures, as well as masks and hand washing every hour, teachers and students still ventured into an uncertain school year, as Wichita-area schools forged ahead with in-person instruction and contact sports. -

A Roadside Appeal
This sign implores Wichita residents to save a life by wearing a protective mask, thereby underscoring face masks' growing importance, when it had been previously dismissed as a relatively ineffective non-pharmaceutical intervention early in the pandemic. Not only does this sign attempt to reinforce the city's mask mandate, its wording also hints at how COVID-19 had become a threat to all age demographics by the summer of 2020. At the time of this photograph, the average age of an infected patient in Wichita had dropped from the mid-60s in the spring to 37, thus Wesley Hospital's appeal for everyone to do their part to help stop a rapidly accelerating and demographically expanding contagion. -

COVID Testing West Wichita
In an effort to expand testing in west Wichita, Kansas, West Wichita Family Physicians sealed off their minor care clinic from the rest of their facility in order to dedicate it to COVID-19 screening and testing. A patient would call the number listed at the bottom of the sign, then proceed to answer questions pertaining to their travel history, risk factors, symptoms, and possible exposure to the virus. Should the patient's condition warrant further investigation, an appointment was made, with the patient being guided by signs such as this to the proper testing site. At the time of this photograph's creation, Kansas's total number of cases stood at nearly 30,000, with over 4,500 in Sedgwick County alone. Typically, Kansans had to wait 9 to 14 days before receiving their results due to backlogs created by high turnouts and too few testing locations. -
