Covid Tests for the Alpine Resorts - HIST30060
This comic drawn by Mark Knight, is a satirical cartoon commenting on Victoria’s requirements to obtain a negative Covid test result prior to entering the Alpine Regions, as the mountains prepared to welcome guests back to their slopes. I came across this cartoon the day it was posted in the Herald Sun, as I was packing my bags to leave for Mount Hotham early the next morning. When entering the resort and prior to driving up the mountain, there was staff in Fluro vests checking everyone had an SMS indicating their negative test result. I found it interesting that this short, 10 second process was the only one in place to keep the Alpine Regions safe from Covid. On the mountain, there was a testing site which never seemed to have any visitors, as well as Covid marshals in Hotham Central (the main building) checking to make sure everyone was wearing a mask, or face covering at all time. Due to the nature of the resort, it felt as if Covid was a thing of the past, with hospitality open, dance floors, retail shops and no social distancing on chair lifts or in accommodation. -

My day
My first half of spring break was pretty great. On Saturday, I went to Big Sky, Montana to ski. I brought my friends Brett, James, and Patrick with me. My good friend Brandon was also up there so he stayed with me. My family has a house up there, so we go once during the winter and once during the summer every year. Sadly there is not a direct flight to the airport in Bozeman Montana. That place is about an hour drive to Big Sky. We flew Delta Airlines and had a connection flight in Minneapolis. In the New Orleans airport, we had chick fil a. The airport was very crowded. Then in Minneapolis, we had about an hour layover. We then arrived in Bozeman Montana at around 8:15 at night. We then went to Dairy Queen and got ready for the hour drive ahead. During that drive, I basically just listened to music. We then finally arrived in Big Sky. We were all pretty tired so we went to bed. The next morning we woke up and then ate a big breakfast. After that, we drove to the Ski Rental shop. We then got our skis and began skiing. We started off with a blue to see how everyone would do. James was not the best and kept falling. After about 2 runs we left my dad and met up with Brandon’s older sister. We then went to the other side of the mountain and skied there. There was a new chairlift that had like a bubble you would pull over you. It also had heated seats. -

Celebrating Christmas during the Pandemic
This Christmas we had to change some of our traditions. Although it could not all be the same we ended up still having a wonderful Christmas. On Christmas eve we wanted to do something special but everything is closed so we just hang out with each other and then at night we went to a church service. Christmas morning, we really didn't have much planned for Christmas so we decided to head to Mammoth. In the morning we opened up all of our presents and packed our bags and got in the car to go off to Mammoth. Once we got to Mammoth we had a lot of fun skiing. The second night we were there our family friends came up to so we got to have dinner with them and play games. A few days later we went home and that's were our break ended. In all we had a wonderful break but I was also very excited to come back to school. -

Christmas Story
Me and my family open our presents in the morning. Then we go over do my dads side for breakfast. Our cousins come over to my grandparents house and we open presents. We stay there for a couple hours. Then in the afternoon we go over to my moms side and all my family goes over there. We eat dinner and we open presents. However because of covid this year we weren't able to go to mammoth to ski. My christmas wasn't different at all. We did the same thing that we normally do. -

Covid Christmas
This Christmas was a lot different than the ones in previous years. Normally, my family would hop on a plane and travel to the midwest or the east coast to visit family. Because of the virus, we couldn't fly and visit our relatives so we wouldn't get infected with the disease. Over our Christmas break, we took smaller ski trips to Mammoth and in northern California. We spent Christmas and New Years as home though, which was actually a nice change from years past. Christmas could definitely gone worse and we just had to adapt our plans as we had all year long.
