Movie Night: Drive In Edition
Going to the Drive In movies was some of the most fun that I had during the Pandemic. This was something that I had not done in a long time before 2020, but once Coronavirus happened going to a normal theater was not a possibility. It was really nice to be able to do something enjoyable, such as watching a movie in public, and not have Covid dominate the experience. While sitting outdoors, under the stars, it was almost as if things were not so unusual right now. When you go so long not doing the things that you like to do for fun, going to watch older movies out doors can become a highlight of the summer. Drive Ins have seen a resurgence in popularity during the Pandemic, the outdoor and spread out nature of cars and Drive Ins has led to many events being able to take place that might not have been able to otherwise. It would be cool to attend a Drive In concert with a band performing. I believe that I will be going to the Starlite Drive In more often than I had in the years before 2020. Also it was good to support a small business during the pandemic. -

Merchandise in Quarantine
In Cambridge, MA, we depend on small businesses, whether they’re corner stores, beauty parlors, restaurants, or specialized outlets. This picture is the lattermost, a music store called Cheapo Records, which I visited often before quarantine. Places like this are extremely important for both conserving history and discovering new music (without algorithms). COVID-19 has only exacerbated the danger Cheapo and others are facing due to rising rents. This picture I took before they reopened spoke to me because it shows how the hiatus wasn’t expected to be this long; the merchandise is left outside, behind an iron curtain, in uncertain indefinance. -

Non-Profit "Local First Arizona" provides necessary financial support to rural small businesses in need
Sarandon Raboin/Luce Foundation: Southwest Stories Fellowship The COVID-19 Pandemic has hit rural small businesses especially hard. Owners are struggling to pay their bills, and even survive. These owners don't necessarily get the same financial support from the federal government as owners in metropolitan areas. The non-profit "Local First Arizona" started providing financial grants to small businesses, especially focusing on those in rural areas of Arizona. These grants have been the saving grace of some rural small business owners. Reporter Sarandon Raboin spoke with some of the owners who were helped by "Local First Arizona". -

Broken glass, broken dreams: Small businesses ravaged by protests and COVID-19 contemplate an uncertain future
Excerpt from article: "Let them do whatever they have to do. Right now I want to focus on lives. Lives over shops. I understand the hurt. Sometimes we gotta go to war for it to be a better day." -

Freddie Mercury Supports Mask Wearing
Since there hasn't been a federal guideline put in place mandating masks out in public, and since most states still seem hesitant to implement a sweeping mandate, it has fallen in many cases on the individual to take up the mantle of responsibility. As small businesses began to reopen across the country and the world, signs normally used for announcing specials are now conveying some important information. Please wear a mask! -

Small Business Updates
As California, and more specifically Orange County, transitions into the various reopening stages, stores are adapting their standard business practices to be in line with the health orders. At a banner and printing store, this means closing the showroom as well as closing down potential walk in business. It is walking a fine line for most businesses. -

Colorado Strong Pale Ale
With restaurants and breweries having to shut down or go to limited capacity because of the pandemic, their financial health has been hit hard. Colorado remains a hot spot for microbreweries and many of those microbreweries are community-driven. In the past, they created beers to raise relief funds for California and Australian wildfires as well as to support the community they work in. Coloradans support each other and the pandemic is no different. With 125 breweries participating the funds will go to jump-start the breweries financial well being and support the medical, gig workers, service industry, and hospitality employees. It's one of the ways food and beverage can be used to drive support to keep our communities strong. Now I just wish I still resided in my home state so I could help out by purchasing each variation of Colorado Strong Pale Ale. -

“People have described it as these times are unprecedented."
“People have described it as these times are unprecedented. Nobody has had to endure or deal with or live through something like this of this magnitude in the past. I know that there's always been previous flus or outbreaks or epidemics here and there you know the black plague obviously was a big one the Spanish Flu the flu of 1918 was pretty bad and you know a lot of those were pretty treacherous for how many lives that they took and how much it affected communities that way so thankfully we haven't had to deal with that a whole lot with this one as of right now.” -

COVID-19 Small Business Impact: Annie's Breakfast & Steaks
The pandemic has had a severe impact on businesses everywhere, but especially small, local ones with not a lot of financial stability. In some cases, these businesses have had to shut their doors for good, not able to sustain the lack of revenue. In my hometown of Orangevale, the place pictured has been serving the community for over 40 years. Despite much popularity over the years, Annie’s Breakfast & Steaks had to close for good recently. Since I worked as a busser here for over two years, this closure affects me personally. In addition to working there, I’ve been going to breakfast there since I was four years old. I also know all the waitresses, cooks, bussers, and managers that worked with me. It is tough to see a place that was a hallmark of my hometown close down. I feel that this photo exemplifies the true reality of economic hardship that is being seen all across the country. As this pandemic goes on, we must understand what the long term economic, psychological, and social effects will be. For every day the lockdowns continue across the country, the future of our society becomes more uncertain. We must stay vigilant, healthy, and safe, but we must also find ways to get back to a sense of normalcy so that businesses like Annie’s don’t suffer a similar fate. -

small Masks businesses
With the lack of masks being sold in and through stores, people have now been making small businesses of their own by sewing and making them. People have gotten really creative with their masks lately. I've seen bandanas, scarves, and oddly enough plastic shields over their faces. Currently, our local Walmart is being cleaned out of all its fabric. Last time I checked it was pretty much empty. People are taking orders for others and selling homemade masks. I have 3 co-workers who sell them, one even sells ones with sports team patterns. I just bought a patriots one for my grandma. I just never thought about people making a living off of masks, its a good time for people to learn how to sew if anything. -

Tailors' shop adertising masks
The male dummy in a local tailor's shop which rents tuxedos has a custom mask. Normally they would be busy with prom rentals and alterations, but there are no proms this year. A sign in the window (not pictured) stated that they were making custom masks, and gave a phone number to call to order some. -

Unmasking Kindness
Days before Minnesota's official shelter in place, people's homes began to transform into small factories. Turning out masks by the dozens, and sometimes even hundreds, Minnesotans answered the call for the protective headwear. Isolation did not stop people from joining together in common cause. Local businesses gave away materials, and local hospitals created drive-by drop offs for people to donate masks. Once we ran out of fabric, my mother turned to old clothes to meet the demands. Pictured above, I am modeling on of the first masks she made. We donated to family members, friends, neighbors, and also to a local hospital. We also shipped some to my brother's coworkers at the Pueblo, Colorado Health Department. In total, my mom has made around 100 masks, showing that not all heroes wear capes, but they do wear masks. #DePaulHST391 -

Local Sign Business is Thriving
Most local businesses in my town are struggling to deal with the changes caused by Covid 19, one local Sign shop has been busy creating signs for the town that inform people about the importance of staying six feet apart and what that distance is equal too. They also have been tasked with creating other covid19 related signs to express when locations are closed of for the time being and helping bring awareness to the the situation. -

Cellar Door Wine Bar
This image is one that has been shared by a bar in the Chicago suburbs, showing thanks to people for supporting small business. I find it interesting because the business does not know that the reader of this sign has in fact supported small, local businesses. Instead, it reads like when your mom says “thanks for unloading the dishwasher” as a way of asking you to unload the dishwasher. #DePaulHST391 -

Warning: This is a Fun Email: Detroit City Distilleries offer levity (and booze) in troubled times
Detroit City Distillery, a local small-batch distiller announces their curbside bottle-buying service in lieu of their usual tasting room, and offers some levity on the side. Embedded videos include techniques for day-drinking (as they point out, "What else is there to do?") as well as cocktail recipes for the St. Patrick's Day holiday. Like many small hospitality businesses, they also encourage the buying of gift cards to help keep their revenue stream flowing even without business-as-usual customers. -
