Empty Shelves as Panic Hits A Small Pennsylvania Town.
This photograph was taken at Giant Food Store in Perkasie, Pennsylvania at the onset of the pandemic. This was the state of the paper product aisle. Stores across the nation struggled to keep up with extreme demand for paper products, sanitizers, and hand soaps. This resulted in months of empty shelves as the town's residents tried to avoid leaving their home and fears grew that even the stores would eventually be locked down. -

Clean Hands and Empty Spirits
This story is a small snapshot into how I felt mentally, and smelled, heard, and touched physically during April 2020. It talks about how the smells and noises around me at the time contributed to my worsening mental state and the feeling of hopelessness. This is important to me because it was this time that I learned that I am mentally stronger than I think and that I can get through rough patches with the help of my husband. It was not a fun experience, but I grew from it. -

The Hungry During The Corona Pandemic
Workers from the food bank of lower Fairfield County in Connecticut took this picture This is a photo that I found on CNN of one of the shelves in a food bank. The amount of people that are relying on food banks has drastically changed since the begging of the pandemic to now. From the pandemic, Feeding America predicts that an estimated 1 in every 6 Americans may face hunger due to the conditions. This photo made me think how fortunate my family and I are and how lucky we are that we don’t have to be concerned with where our next meal is coming from. I think that this Is an important photo because it shows how many people are in need of food and are unable to support themselves. since more people are out of jobs because of not being able to come in contact with other people has affected the income of many and the amount they can spend on food. -

The only Texas prison reporting zero coronavirus cases is where inmates make soap. But that’s not what’s credited with protecting it.
One prison unit in all of Texas still doesn't have any confirmed Coronavirus cases in incarcerated persons or staff. The Roach Unit attributes this to being located in a community with a low population and following the rules set out by the state for corrections facilities. Ironically, this facility is also where soap and hand sanitizer is also made for prisons. Though most prisons will not allow hand sanitizer to be given to inmates because it contains alcohol, they could drink it or use it as an accelerant to start a fire. While the warden states he is just following the rules, others say it is his strict adherence to the rules that has kept everyone healthy. Other facilities could possibly use this facility to learn from. -

Wash Hands Before Entering
These photographs taken of the east side of a local Wichita grocery store depict the continuing efforts businesses are taking to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Positioned just off the east parking lot, this recently-installed hand-washing station makes clear in both English and Spanish that it is not for any use other than sanitation. With medical professionals touting masks and thorough, 20-second hand-washing as some of the most effective means of prevention, images like this reflect how stores are attempting to ensure customer and employee safety as much as possible by making hygienic facilities as widely available as possible, even before a customer even enters the store. -

John Oliver on prisons during Covid-19: 'That's not justice, that's neglect'
Late night host, John Oliver, of HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver," recently dedicated the main portion of his thirty minute show to highlighting the struggle of America's inmates with the covid-19 pandemic. This article provides the highlights of the show including a lack of soap, the number of non-inmate personal who are ill, covid being introduced to new facilities through prison transfer, people who have yet to be convicted but stuck in jail because they cannot afford cash bail, and the use of solitary confinement as punishment for one inmate who shared a video on Facebook. -

Fort COVID
My laptop died, so I headed to Sawyer Library in search of a replacement laptop, a much needed item in this COVID time. With only a select few stores open and selling electronics and with no inventory due to manufacturing restrictions, I was forced into the possibility of borrowing one from the library. Passing through security, I noticed that Tom, who said he never left, still collects the university's newspapers, which are piling up. The newspapers behind him belong to other depts. on campus. Meanwhile, the library's newspapers sit in buckets around the corner waiting to be claimed. I call these piles "Fort COVID". -

Rationing Items
The Sam's Club in Eau Claire limiting soap for customers to one per item. This tells us the levels of desperation consumers went in panic buying basic items coupled with the disruption in supply chains that created shortages for everyday consumers.
