We the people of social distancing
2 Ive heard people talk and stress the importance of social distancing, but when it comes down to it we tend to forget or disregard it. I know it is and still is important to go out and protest or get out of the house for our sanity but I feel like people continuing to disregard the “ 6 feet apart rule “ as we can clearly see in this photo. Social distancing no matter where , whether thats out there protesting, voting , shopping or getting dinner , you are should be followed to keep its effectiveness. I want the future to know that we didn’t do or try our best to help reduce or end corona whether it was because of our government not taking this seriously or because individuals continued to go out and further spread corona. -

Airlines Conduct Tests to Prove that COVID-19 Spread is not High in Airplanes
United Airlines, Boeing and the Defense Department conducted tests to gauge the risk of getting infected with the coronavirus on a plane. They used a mannequin that would use a spray to stimulate a cough. They concluded that the spread of infection is not high. However, the test failed to test many other factors, such as the patient turning their head to the side to cough, coughing while walking around the cabin, and other common locomotions of airplane passengers. Thus, the test was inconclusive, and seems like a desperate effort for the airline companies to get their customers back. -

Black Lives Matter Protests and COVID-19 Spikes.
I found this news article in June. I was scrolling through a variety of news articles on my phone when I happened across this one discussing if there was a link between Black Lives Matter protests and Coronavirus spikes. I remember being intrigued by this article because I saw online arguments from anti-BLM individuals stating that now is not the time to protest and protestors are spreading the virus faster. I found this news article insightful and important because Black Lives Matter gained momentum three months into the United States shutdown. Since the two events happened around the same time and there appeared to be misinformation spread by individuals, I found it helpful to stick to news outlets. -

WEAR A MASK!!!
Wear a Mask Mesita Wear a mask Saving people's life Is really heavy metal You could do it today If you wear a mask If you need to go out Decide to go get cucumbers or something I don't know Something essential Like wearing a mask Wear another mask Wearing a mask Is really, really cool It stops you from getting sunburnt on your lips Wearing a mask Is really, really cool It doesn't hurt your breathing at all Your oxygen levels will stay the same Trust me, random lady Wearing a mask is the coolest thing to do I think you should probably wear a mask And if you don't like to be told what to do, hey I mean just like, just look at- You can't drive drunk either Wearing a mask Wearing a mask, mask I found this song “ Wear a Mask.” by Mesita as a sound on the social media app Tik Tok, and when I saw this assignment I thought it would fit pretty good. This song isn't very good but It has a really good message about this pandemic and how people are taking it. Due to the pandemic we are required to wear masks for everyone's safety and to help stop the spread of Covid-19, but many people don’t seem to grasp that concept. During this pandemic I have learned how flawed our Government System is and the lack of action taken to help those who are suffering is outrageous. Out of all the issues that are contributing to the spread, NOT wearing a mask is one of the big ones. Those who are against wearing a mask think that wearing a simple piece of cloth is violating their First Amendment rights. They can seem to see as to why wearing a mask is for not only the protection of others around them but for them as well. People who do not wear a mask are the people who are spreading the virus, they are endangering everyone around them and action should be enforced among these people who are refusing to follow state mandates. One of the ajor reasons why they are not going to take action are that the majority of these people are of white complexion, but that's another argument for another time. ., Mesita, director. Las Vegas, a Petri Dish for the Coronavirus
News of China’s “coronavirus” began to circulate in December of 2019. In March, the risk of the virus was very well known. This is when my high school shut down. In May, casinos shut down too. This was a good response by the government that was practically reversed in the months afterward. The picture above was taken on June 6 of 2020, months after people have become painfully aware of the virus. Casinos had recently reopened, and businesses were attracting tourists to make up for the massive losses of revenue during the quarantine. As you can see, there is a complete lack of social distancing, with some people failing to wear masks. This picture, to me, is but one of many examples of the government failing to protect its citizens. It’s no surprise that the reopening of commercial activity in Las Vegas resulted in another peak of Covid cases, unraveling all of the previous progress made to flatten the curve. Las Vegas is now a petri dish for the virus to thrive and spread. People in the healthcare field, including my father, are now under immense amounts of stress as Covid patients come pouring in. If officials, and citizens, had listened to common sense and scientific evidence from the start, we would have stopped isolating months ago. -

In California’s prison factories, inmates worked for pennies an hour as COVID-19 spread
This article highlights the changes that have been made inside US correctional facilities during the Covid-19 pandemic. While visitation, religious services, rehab and educational programs, phone usage, and even showers have been cut down or completely eliminated, prison labor continues. Incarcerated people are also not able to refuse to work. Doing so can result in loosing privileges time added onto a sentence, or loss of parole or release. In this particular article when the prison was confronted with the worry over the virus being spread through work they defended their position saying they only continued work in places that produced items necessary to fight the pandemic such as soap, hand sanitizer, and masks. While much of the spread of Covid-19 in correctional facilities has been linked to the transfer of inmates this article highlights another avenue for spread, the movement of materials to make things such as masks. The women in one prison were making masks using fabric produced by the men's prison next door. The driver that delivered the fabric from the men's prison was not wearing a mask or taking other precautions. -

コロナ感染予防にリップクリームが効果(2020年10月10日) - Lip balm is effective in preventing corona infection (October 10, 2020)
This is a news talking how lip balms could be effective in the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 virus. French researchers have announced that lip balm is effective in preventing the spread of the spit, which is one of the infection routes of the new coronavirus. The research was conducted by Professor Abcarian of the University of Montpellier, France. During conversations, especially when pronouncing P or B, a thread of saliva is formed between the lips, which becomes a spit and is released into the air. However, when lip balm was applied, it became difficult for the saliva threads to form, and for some people, the amount of scattered spit was reduced to one-fourth. Professor Abcarian: "I wondered what would happen if I changed the quality of the surface of my lips. In my research, applying a cream used for moisturizing reduced the amount of droplets (himatsu)." The effect differs depending on the sound, and the effect itself lasts only about 1 minute, so lip balm is not a substitute for a mask, but they will continue their research. -

「富岳」飛沫拡散を計算 “座り位置”で飛沫5倍に(2020年10月13日) - "Tomitake" calculated that the depending on the position of the seat, the droplet could be 5 times more (October 13, 2020)
This is the news explaining how droplets travel and the risk of exposure. In the verification of the risk of new corona infection using the supercomputer "Tomitake", it was found that when sitting next to each other at a restaurant and talking, they are exposed to five times as many droplets (himatsu) compared to when sitting and talking in front of each other. “Tomitake” calculated how the droplets spread when four people talked at a restaurant for about one minute. According to Professor Makoto Tsubokura of Kobe University, who is the team leader of RIKEN, it was found that when an infected person sits next to an individual and talks, he/she is exposed to five times as many droplets as when he/she sits in front of him/her. Furthermore, it was found that the lower the humidity of the droplets themselves, the more the droplets will be floating in the air without falling down. At a humidity of 30%, more than twice as many droplets, compared to the humidity at 60%, reached 1.8 meters away. Also, when a choir is singing in a concert hall, the droplets go straight forwards and thus the risk increases for the person in front, and the airflow created by the chorus causes the droplets to reach farther. -

Masks may reduce viral dose, some experts say
Many Researchers have known that masks can prevent people from spreading viruses to others. Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease physician made the argument that people wearing face coverings will take in fewer coronavirus particles. They have found the more virus in the nasal plume, the likelier the people were to get infected and experience symptoms. Some researchers have estimated that about 40 percent of coronavirus infections do not produce any symptoms. But when people wear masks, the proportion of asymptomatic cases seems to increase. Wearing a face covering doesn’t make people impervious to infection, but these trends could make a milder disease, reducing deaths. -

Millennials and Gen Z are spreading coronavirus - but not because of parties and bars
This article illustrates one of the main problems with fighting a pandemic. In order to completely stay safe, one needs to stay at home. But in order to pay bills and afford to keep their households going, one needs to be able to go out and work. Trying to balance the need to stay distant and the need to provide for one's family is a struggle that everyone is going through together. -

Security Changes in Maricopa County Jails in Light of Covid-19
This is a press release that was published in March, right at the time when the US was really starting to get hit with the pandemic. At the time this was published, there were no confirmed cases of the virus in the jails, but the Sheriff's office began increasing security and limiting access in an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus within the jail population. Even at the beginning, it was evident that this would not be a flash in the pan type incident but a long lasting event that would require rethinking the 'everyday normal' to keep people safe and healthy. -

San Quentin Still at 100% Capacity
Covid-19 has been eye opening and really illustrated many of the problems we as a society have done a good job ignoring. One of the things society has long ignored is overcrowding in prisons and jails in the US. We've also learned that any enclosed population without the ability to social distance is a risk for having a major Covid-19 outbreak. Together, overcrowding and the inability to social distance, has made for a bleak outlook in the nation's correctional facilities. This Tweet shows that even this far in to the pandemic and the outbreak at San Quentin the prison is still over capacity. -

California's Failures at Testing
California, as one of the biggest states in the country, was always going to have a challenge in managing the coronavirus. After the initial horror stories that came out of New York sounded like they were from an apocalypse novel, I was hopeful that California would rise to the challenge and try to mitigate the issues. As one of the earliest states to impose quarantine orders, things seemed to be going well. Turns out, that necessarily wasn't the case when it came to testing. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #california. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it highlights the reporting that is happening around the failures that have happened in the past concerning the virus, and how we can improve things moving forward. link to article mentioned in tweet: (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-07-12/california-fail-coronavirus-testing-covid-start) -

Virus Exposes Weak Links in Peru’s Success Story
Peru has become a hotspot for coronavirus, despite an intense lockdown and track & trace technology. The article highlights that COVID-19 cases have overwhelmed Peru's hospitals and healthcare capacity, what's understated is that Peru did take the right measures, they did react correctly and with national leadership. The problem is that they could not sustain an extended quarantine period. If it had been a true quarantine and the borders were closed, things might look differently, but the U.S. and Peru took weeks to negotiate repatriation of citizens, and groups of migrants began returning to the countryside or leaving Peru for their homeland, such as in the case of Venezuelans. With all of that movement, it is impossible to control the spread of an infectious disease. -
