Domestic Violence Works From Home
As the stay at home order across Illinois continues to extend as we reach the second month in quarantine, many have been trapped in unsafe situations with those they share a residence with. Domestic violence works from home, people have lost their small escape for the day. Neighborhoods in Chicago and across the city have been helping others get out of stressful situations by providing discreet messaging templates that often provide the survivor to offer their address so police could be called or for the survivor to be picked up. Recently, Chicago mayor, Lorilightfoot has also launched her plan to help by training local domestic violence hotline phone operators to give out promo codes so survivors can be driven to a safe location by a rideshare driver for free. #DePaulHST391 -

Residents of Rocinha favela show their thanks to health teams working to prevent the spread of COVID-19
This film shows residents of the Rocinha favela in Rio de Janeiro celebrating health workers by clapping, cheering, and flashing the lights of their homes. The captions reads: "Residents of Rocinha applaud and flash their lights in gratitude to the whole medical team that is dedicated to the prevention of the coronavirus. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! Film by a resident." The entry is tagged with #COVIDnasFavelas, a hashtag documenting the efforts of local residents to provide food and care in the absence of federal, state, and local resources and leadership. As the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro continues to deny the severity of the pandemic, the most marginalized communities are crowd-sourcing food to help those forced to stay home. Most workers and families have few or no savings to draw on. "Moradores da Rocinha aplaudiram e piscaram as luzes em agradecimento a toda equipe médica que está dedicada na prevenção do coronavírus. FOI LINDO!!! Vídeo de morador #COVID19NasFavelas" https://twitter.com/jornalfalaroca/status/1241194834364444673?s=20 #COVIDnasFavelas #NJIThist380 -

Russia 2020. Our government decided that it’s better not to have “Emergency situation” and official quarantine. Russian citizens instead have “self-isolation”.In this case we all need to stay home, BUT no money were added to our accounts, no food provided from government or any kind of support at all. Instead, they decided that citizens without job, money and support need to pay fines every time they are on the street. What a great idea! And just before COVID-19 Russian Ruble felt dramatically because our government decided to have even more oil then before...Thanks again. Now we have: millions of poor people trying to survive, billioners get more money than before, government has more money from fines, but none spent on citizens, all small business shut down and have no chance to recover. In this situation any other country would help their own citizens. But Russia as a very generous country sent help to China,USA,Italy and other countries. Don’t worry, we don’t have sufficient quantity of doctors and medical resources, medicine in Russia will survive somehow. So would people. And everything after this pandemia...not going to change. Our country forgot about us. -

See religions around the world adapt in the age of coronavirus
Due to the mayhem following the coronavirus pandemic that has been occurring worldwide, “religious leaders have had to find creative ways to bring their services and communities together” according to Adam Jeffery with the CNBC. Throughout the article, Jeffrey displayed how all around the world religious leaders have thought of very innovative ways to keep their followers still involved in the church and to try to keep communities as together as possible. In Austria, the catholic priest Johannes Laichner is “circulating incense over the photographs of members of his congregation” (Jeffery, 2020). In places like Bowie, Maryland, Rv. Scott Holmer risks his life to go outside and “make the sign of a cross while holding confession in the church parking lot” (Jeffery, 2020). In Israel, Ultra-Orthodoc Jews still show their faithfulness to their house of worship as they “pray along a street outside their closed synagogue while respecting the social distancing regulations'' (Jeffery, 2020). Places all over the world are still keeping their faith in the higher power they believe in during such a sad and crazy time that we’re living in. Both the people as well as the religious leaders all around are displaying their support for each other in various ways to convey the message that regardless of what may be going on in the world, the higher power is still the answer and we’re in this together. -

Bandcamp To Once Again Waive Its Cut of Sales to Support Artists on May 1st
"Last month, Bandcamp waived their revenue share on all purchases for a 24-hour period, in a gesture of support to all the artists who've been impacted by the coronavirus lockdowns. The initiative was a huge success. Techcrunch.com reports it was the biggest day in the site's 11-year history: "artists raised $4.3 million in music and merchandise sales over the 24-hour period. That comes out to more than 15x Bandcamp’s normal numbers on a Friday — or, as the site puts, it 11 items per second over the course of the day. In all, some 800,000 items were sold, versus the standard 47,000." "We don’t yet know the long-term impact of Covid-19, but we know that we all need music — to uplift and inspire us, to heal us, and to give us hope," Bandcamp wrote on their website. "We’ll continue working to make Bandcamp the best place for fans and artists to come together and sustain each other in the challenging times ahead." Well, the online music company is doing just that on Friday, May 1st. More details will be shared next Monday, April 27th. Until then... start making your shopping lists. " -

A Year Without Easter
While my family and I were able to celebrate Easter this year, I didn't quite feel the same. Usually, we would have a bunch of our family members over to eat and we would spend most of the day celebrating Easter. This was the first year we didn't do that. We had our dinner, but it kinda just felt like any regular old family dinner. I can't see my grandparents all that much since they are at high risk for the virus. Not only that, but my Aunt would usually bring her family down from Georgia to come celebrate with us, but my Uncle is also at a very high risk due to a kidney transplant. They and their kids would usually come over, and me and my sisters would do our annual Easter egg hunt with them. Of course, they usually get a head start since they're little kids. My sisters and I, however, are practically bloodthirsty about it. We've been doing Easter egg hunts ever since we were little, and we hadn't skipped a year until this one. While I'm optimistic that my family and I will be able to continue as normal next year, you never really know. Who knows how long we might not be able to practice our usual family traditions? We still keep in touch with our family members, but from a distance. This whole situation has really made me realize just how important family is in times of crisis. How we need to support each other, and help each other out. Frankly, if I didn't have my family to support me during times like this, I think I'd go insane. -

Seattle-area Sikh community leans on core values to help those in need during coronavirus pandemic
The article describes how a Seattle Sikh community drawing upon its religions core values has come to the aid of city since the rise of the current pandemic. This local Sikh chapter operates a community kitchen and has teamed up with other local partners to expand their reach since the outbreak. "The World Should Unite"
In 2020, when the Chinese New Year is approaching, a virus broke out in Wuhan that people have never seen before. After the New Year, the entire China began to fight against the outbreak. I feel deeply that in the early stage of the outbreak, there were countless young doctors in China who voluntarily signed up and applied to go to the place where the epidemic was most severe-Wuhan, the hero of the Chinese people, Grandpa Zhong Nanshan, arrived in Wuhan as soon as possible, which made us feel the most united It was during the epidemic that the Chinese people were able to obey the government's command to close the city, close the countryside, and close the community. The people stayed at home and did not go out, so that the epidemic did not spread so quickly. The virus is also under control Here I want to thank the medical staff who traveled to Wuhan. You risked your life to protect me. You did not choose to back down and avoid, but chose to fight against the virus. You came forward. Many young doctors did not tell themselves Parents are afraid of them. Many attending doctors change their hair from black to white within a month. During this epidemic, many doctors unfortunately contracted the virus during the treatment and did not return to their hometown and died. The epidemic is on the front line. Here, I want to pay tribute to all the medical staff, to the dead medical staff, you have worked hard. I would also like to thank those who contributed to the epidemic, the staff of the Wuhan "Vulcan Mountain" Hospital and the "Raytheon Mountain" Hospital, you worked hard, you built the hospital in just ten days, it was shocked The speed of the world is the result of your work day and night, and you have worked hard. In this epidemic, I feel the unity of the Chinese people. Most people, following the government ’s decision, stay at home and do not go out. Songs written by singers to cheer for Wuhan, and painters painted for Wuhan, writers, many people use their own ways to cheer for China and cheer for medical staff. This makes us very moved. There are many entrepreneurs and workers. Both students and teachers donated money for the epidemic, and many large manufacturing companies began to produce masks and disinfectants. Chinese people are cheering for Wuhan in their own way, cheering for medical staff I would also like to thank other countries that helped China during the epidemic. When the epidemic broke out, many countries assisted China by donating, donating, sending medical teams to China, and refueling China in various ways, although there are Some complained to China, but people from all over the world also cheered for China. Many of our teachers even chose to stand with the Chinese people and stay in China even when the epidemic was serious. People from all countries said that they helped and cheered on China With a "thank you" China's epidemic situation is much better now. China will also try its best to help other countries. Only when we unite will the world be perfect. -

This image is one that has been shared by a bar in the Chicago suburbs, showing thanks to people for supporting small business. I find it interesting because the business does not know that the reader of this sign has in fact supported small, local businesses. Instead, it reads like when your mom says “thanks for unloading the dishwasher” as a way of asking you to unload the dishwasher. #DePaulHST391 -
