  From the article: One parent said that her son is “tired” of the racism because it is a common occurrence at the school. “He absolutely told me, ‘Mom, I’m tired of it, do what you need to do because this is not fair and I’m tired of feeling like this,'” she said. But one of the school’s basketball coaches, John Smith, is standing up for the teachers. “This isn’t our school, this was a mistake,” he said. “Everybody in the world makes mistakes, everybody in the world has faults and this is just a little fault that we’ve had. This is not our school. I truly believe that they did not know what they were posting.” The school, though, openly supports discrimination. Their website says that the school teaches that marriage is “the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture” and denounces the “immorality and sinfulness of sexual relationships outside of biblical marriage and of sexual relationships between persons of the same sex.”

  The main point of this news article is to show how teachers and administrators are struggling to adjust to the new lifestyle of having school during a pandemic, while being safe at the same time. I chose this news article because as a student, it’s important to be aware of what you may have to experience when going back to school. Also, the precautions and safety nets that teachers are taking should be addressed because they’re putting in lots of work for students. This news article shows that the school lifestyle is going to change drastically for teachers and students due to the new learning spaces, social distancing, and hygiene necessities. Furthermore, this news article is important because it’s not evident on how long this pandemic may affect our lives, so the public needs to be educated on the situation that we’re going to be put in and may continue to be put in. There’s no bias evident in the article, however there is a perspective point of view from New York teachers and how they are forced to handle these harsh times. The responsibility of the media during the COVID-19 pandemic is to spread awareness on how everyone can be kept safe and that we must take extra precautions so we can go back to our daily lives and see students go back to school freely again.

  5 hours on Zoom is too much

  Sitting next to my 6yo while she sits on Zoom for 5 hours isn’t working. The teachers assume that a parent is there ready to jump in at any moment, and if we aren’t problems bubble up. For example, I was working on Maya’s second day of school and I missed that she took a bathroom break and missed that her teacher scolded her for taking one. I emailed the school’s principal, because while I really, really want her to attend the bilingual school, I don’t think it’s possible with the current set up. I wrote an email and asked, basically, what would happen if she unenrolled and came back.

  Break the Union

  Recently my school district announced that we will begin the school year with remote learning. While many members of the community were in favor of remote learning, many were also incredibly vocal about their wish for a return to full in-person learning. This does not surprise me. There will always be multiple perspectives and positions on any major decisions that need to be made that impact large groups of people. Some individuals in support of full in-person learning have taken to social media and have begun attacking district teachers blaming them and their union for the district's decision to start the school year with remote learning. There is an aggressive tone to many of these posts. As a parent of children that attend school within the district, as well as teacher within the district, I worry about the environment that teacher's are going to be educating children in this year. With remote learning, we will literally be teaching in the homes of parents that are openly demonstrating hostility toward teachers. This brings a great deal of worry and anxiety as I prepare for the upcoming school year.

  "Every Parent Online"

  A meme the caption to which reads "Every parent right now" followed by three identical images of an SNL performer dressed as a middle aged women with large hair, looking horrified and/or disgusted. Many boards have changed their plans several times over the summer as the number of cases in their areas have changed and they have received feedback from parents, teachers, and health professionals.

  Professional Athletes and Schools

  When the schools originally shut down back in March, professional sports league were quick to follow congruently. Distance learning doesn't necessarily carry over to sports. As Summer reaches its height, everyone is itching to return to school and get sports back on as quickly as possible. What this looks like is playing out differently in various job spheres.   Annual Teachers' Performance: Don't Stop Believin' - Canterbur Edition

  Every year, during the Christmas and end-of the-year "blockbuster" (talent show) assemblies, the entirety of the staff at Canterbury High School put on a song and dance. With schools closed this year they took it online and created video of them in their homes dedicated to the students and graduating class in particular. In choosing the song Don't Stop Believin' they shared a sentiment of hope and understand during a stressful time for students. They also made some inside references in the way they changed the words from the original song: the O-train is notoriously inconsistent and often does not run, hence going nowhere (on top of going nowhere because of restrictions due to the pandemic.)

  Middle School - Final Staff Meeting, Budget Cuts, & Student Population

  Staff Meeting 5/29/2020 Agenda: Wrap up the year Reflection: Today we learned that our Title 1 funding will not be increased and most will be cut for the next year. We are losing 2 staff members because of this cut and that leaves us in a place where we need to find elective classes for 240 students next year. We additionally lost another elective teacher this year as her funding was moved towards an instructional coach position. Middle schools are also in a unique situation right now as we are experiencing a drop in our attendance numbers. This drop is because our students right now were born during the economic recession of 2008 and the years immediately following. The 2008 recession is credited with a drop in the birth rate from 2008 to 2010. There were tears on our meeting as teachers are frustrated with our system moving forward. Our district was very fortunate to have the finances to weather this original economic storm but as we look forward we have learned that we don’t have the money to keep everyone on staff.

  Letter to my son’s 4th grade teacher

  The greatest hardship for my children in this time is the loneliness of missing their beloved teachers and friends. Writing letters to their teachers helps them feel connected and is good writing practice for their home learning.
