HIST30060: Food Relief Centre Queue
This is a photograph taken of a queue to enter a food relief centre in South Melbourne in August 2020. The queue was several hundred metres long. As lockdowns began to ravage Melbourne, most businesses were forced to close, resulting in many people losing their jobs. Where this food relief centre had services around 100 people at the start of 2020, this number swelled to over 2000 by the height of the pandemic. Among the most vulnerable demographics affected by the pandemic restrictions were international casual workers and students. Where citizens were eligible to apply for various emergency relief payments, such as Job Keeper or Job Seeker, migrants did not have access to these resources. This food bank only required a form of identification to register the recipients. Several pandemic related restrictions are shown in this picture. The recipients are socially distanced, standing on makeshift markings spaced 1.5 metres apart by government restriction. They wear masks; a government requirement both indoors and outdoors at the height of the pandemic in Victoria. The food bank volunteers wear neon orange high-visibility vests and hold QR codes for the recipients to register on their own devices. I have volunteered at the food relief centre since 2020, performing the same role as the volunteers in the photograph. Where mainstream historical narratives and media may focus on how the lockdowns affected citizens, it is important to remember how migrants too were affected by the pandemic and had little to know support from the Australian government. -

Vaccine Story: Phoenix educator is hoping for a safe return to the classroom
Kristina Erickson, a seventh-year Phoenix educator, received her initial dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer) just after midnight on January 13, 2021. Ms. Erickson describes her experience as both exciting and nerve-wracking during and after her visit to the State Farm immunization station. She states that the process was surprisingly organized, despite the long line of cars awaiting their appointment. During our interview, Ms. Erickson was forthcoming about her decision to get the vaccine. She said, "I really want to get back into the classroom. If I can meet CDC guidelines so I can see my kids again, I'll do it!" On February 5th, Kristina will be returning for her second and final dose. -

Non-classic Student in the Time of COVID-19
He was struck suddenly by the massage, a life changing massage which indeed deconstructs his unwanted college life but also his entire plan of how to waste it. The massage is, with years process, the approval of major change request, which he actually had expected a deny because of his junior status. Since it happened, he suddenly lost his plan about next school year and the summer vacation between. As an international student, he was planing a summer school which becomes unnecessary now, and he is not sure how to do exactly. The thing is almost all of his friends returned home either by airplane or automobile and he really has nothing to do in such pandemic. "I guess I should go home." he tells himself repeatedly and finally buys an airline ticket without clue if it would be canceled which is frequent in pandemic. Now all he can do is waiting, waiting for the eradication of last COVID-19 virus, waiting for the lovely first class next year, waiting for the familiar room home next month, waiting for the ticket confirmation next week, waiting for the confidence in final next time, waiting for the salute of professor next lecture, waiting for the oil boiling next meal, and waiting for the sunshine next morning. He is doubting if life must be passive, and suddenly wind strikes curtain; he choose to shut the window, and the street lamps outside are still on. -

The Virus Series #30: Waiting
The focus of this piece is the human waiting on the threshold/doorway. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting. For time to move forward, for the pandemic to lessen, for the 'new normal' to begin. Stillness in the time of chaos. *Original text in "Date:" 4/29/2020 in lockdown/quarantine -

Waiting to Return #1
When the school closed, it was unlike any other closing. Teachers left up the bulletin boards and projects were still hanging from the ceilings. Do we take down the maps and put away our figurines on our desk to keep from dust? When will we return? It's only March. The school year isn't over yet. A month later, the classrooms are still wondering. The teachers are still hoping. The students are still asking. The wishers are still wishing. The prayers are still praying.
