Conflict between Business and Social Distancing: Mayor's intervention blocks plan to open Bank Street to pedestrians
News article relaying that, after initial local support, city council and the mayor vetoed a plan to close some lanes of Bank Street, a major road, to traffic, to allow those walking on the sidewalk, especially when crossing the Bank Street Bridge over the Rideau Canal. would be able to maintain a 2 meter distance from one another. Local businesses were concerned with the reduction in traffic and roadside parking spaces this would cause, further reducing their business in an already difficult time. Circling
The students are 6th graders at Colorado Academy, a PreK - 12 independent day school in Denver, Colorado. After departing for Spring Break, and not returning to physical school, the students began Learning From Home and taking classes via Zoom. After 8 days in this “new school” the students wrote reflections on their “new reality." They were given complete freedom to craft any type of statement that tapped into their emotions about the change forced upon them by the Coronavirus pandemic. Please note that neither of these pieces was edited by me or by their parents (they actually had not see them until I asked for permission, and I did not read them until they were turned in to be graded). -

Continuing to Keep the Villages Clean: Maya Communities Come Together
"Fahina is when the community comes together to care for their village. The story of resislience continues to live on among our people. Today during the delivery of food relief a village leader explained that his village competed their fahina. That is was done in teams of 10 persons at a time. That it took longer but as he said 'who else will take care of our village. We cannot allow the bush to grow over us because of this sickness.'" #IndigenousStories -

"Wash Yer Mitts, Lads" Sign
This photograph was taken while driving through the intersection of Carp Rd. and March Rd. in the National Capital Region. It shows a roadside advertising board, in front of the town sign for the village of Carp, which reads "Wash Yer Mitts Lads" referring to the medical advise to wash your hands often to prevent the spread of the covid-19 virus. While other signs exist with similar sentiments, this sign is unique in that it is not visually associated with a business or public entity. Its lack of context gives the impression that it is a message from the community to its members rather than an advertisement or a public health announcement. What is more, the phrasing and spelling of the word "yer" emulates the slang and accent of the Ottawa Valley, further connecting it to the community in which it is situated and making it more lighthearted. While still a warning or admonishment to prevent the spread of the disease, this sign also pokes fun at the current situation in a very local manner. -

Despite Pandemic, China's Last Hunting Tribe Welcomes Reindeer Calving Season
"“Reindeer used to be the main means of transportation for the Ewenki ethnic group. In modern society, however, many hunters still maintain the tradition of raising reindeer and use their ways to protect the creature. Damara, a local hunter, has seen the birth of several fawns since April. As many first-time mothers cannot take care of their fawns and might even abandon them, local hunters will help nurse the babies during the two-month long calving season…Statistics showed that over 1,400 reindeer live in the northern areas of the Greater Hinggan Mountains. In Aoluguya, there are 13 breeding spots. During the calving season, Ewenki herders also enhance patrols in the forests to guarantee the safety of these creatures. The township has seen the expansion of the reindeer population in recent years, as the local government has taken actions to protect breeding and also worked with an agricultural institution to improve survival. More than 180 reindeer are expected to be born during this calving season, according to local government.”" #IndigenousStories -

COVID-19 Small Business Impact: Annie's Breakfast & Steaks
The pandemic has had a severe impact on businesses everywhere, but especially small, local ones with not a lot of financial stability. In some cases, these businesses have had to shut their doors for good, not able to sustain the lack of revenue. In my hometown of Orangevale, the place pictured has been serving the community for over 40 years. Despite much popularity over the years, Annie’s Breakfast & Steaks had to close for good recently. Since I worked as a busser here for over two years, this closure affects me personally. In addition to working there, I’ve been going to breakfast there since I was four years old. I also know all the waitresses, cooks, bussers, and managers that worked with me. It is tough to see a place that was a hallmark of my hometown close down. I feel that this photo exemplifies the true reality of economic hardship that is being seen all across the country. As this pandemic goes on, we must understand what the long term economic, psychological, and social effects will be. For every day the lockdowns continue across the country, the future of our society becomes more uncertain. We must stay vigilant, healthy, and safe, but we must also find ways to get back to a sense of normalcy so that businesses like Annie’s don’t suffer a similar fate. -

Comment Section and Human Nature
I'm a member of several community (some smaller, some wider) Facebook groups. I am not overly active, especially when discussion occur that get heated. In this screenshot, someone asked if anyone actually knew anyone with Covid-19, as opposed to just a friend of a friend. Within this particular group, there is a large contingent of people that refer to the pandemic as "plandemic" and sincerely believe that the government, or the left, or whatever, are using this pandemic to further control the public and ruin the economy. Many of the respondents to this question (over 200 at the time I took this screenshot) emphasized that they knew of no one, and it was being blown out of proportion. I found this particular interaction in the comments interesting, however, because the first person that, in all caps, stated that it was a sham, immediately offered condolences to the person who's friend almost died. It reminded me that people will say- or yell in caps- in social media and get all worked up, but they can be kind. I don't know if this person changed their mind about it being a sham after "hearing" about a near death, but it shows how crazy comment sections can be. -

Teachers in Burlington Support Students During COVID-19
The school system and education are one of the most important pillars of Burlington, MA’s core values. Its educators are dedicated to the success of their students. Thus, a “social-distancing” parade was created to go through the neighborhoods and greet current and former students. Even though remote learning is the new going to school, the educators wanted to show their support for the students and their families. -

COVID on the Border: Part II
A personal account of the pandemic. COVID on the Border: Part II Its been 6 weeks since I arrived in this small little border town. COVID and its accompanying regulations changed everything here since then. The mask rules went into effect two weeks ago, police will ticket on the spot if found in public without a mask. Over the past week I continue to watch the numbers climb, soon the U.S. has surpassed the rest of the world’s nations with COVID illnesses and deaths. Social distancing has just become the buzzword of the year. Everyone knows who Dr. Fauci is. I went to the local Walmart to pick up a few groceries; my hotel room has a fridge and stove. Milk, gone. Bottled water, gone. Eggs, gone. Soap, hand sanitizer, forget about it. There’s a hushed panic on the faces of many of the shoppers. I make do with the basics and head back to my hotel room. Is the zombie apocalypse coming? Working in a new places forces me to meet new people. After introducing myself there’s an awkward feeling when we both realize that shaking hands is now taboo. Will shaking hands ever return? Should we adopt the Eastern bow? We now question the traditions that have shaped our lives. Who are we deep down? We’re naked and vulnerable without tradition. Breakfast at the hotel is now a thing of the past. Can’t serve it, too many COVID concerns. Sure. And how much is the hotel saving now. We make do. The hotel receptionist now serves our coffee. She’s nice. I use it as a way to practice my Spanish again. I enjoy it, I think she’d rather me speak English. Life in the hotel consists of channel changes back and forth from CNN to FOX. I have to ensure my understanding is balanced, I guess each network cancels each other out. Although life here is at a standstill, I am impressed with the way the farms and agriculture moves forward. I still witness workers arriving at the fields in the afternoon to escape the heat of the day. They work hard, picking carrots, broccoli, spinach and lettuce. Life doesn’t stop for many. They’ll be getting no stimulus checks, yet they continue forward, doing the only thing they know to do: work to put food on a table for a family somewhere. I’m impressed. This small little border town has some grit. It’s growing on me. -

Pizza and Toliet Paper
A local pizza place called Rosatis Pizza has begun to give out a free roll of toliet paper for every order. When my family ordered dinner from there we had no idea they were doing this. It is weird to think about how just a few months ago if a pizza place gave out a roll of toliet paper it would have been very strange, but now in the current environment created by the pandemic it is a thoughtful and appreciated gesture. It shows how values have changed during the pandemic and the importance of still trying to support local businesses as best as we can, and in return the businesses are doing what they can to show their appreciate for consumer support during the pandemic. -

Customers at Mahoney's Garden Center in Winchester, MA observe physical distancing while waiting to pick up compost, mulch, and other garden supplies.
Confined to their homes, residents of Greater Boston have been seeking solace in their own space by gardening more than ever. The town of Brookline began to pick up yard waste weeks earlier than it usually does as a result of popular demand, garden centers across the city are now delivering supplies and plants to customers, and at Mahoney's a popular garden center in the Boston subrub of Winchester, the line to pick up supplies was hundreds of feet long. Yet the space still felt empty, as pickups were carefully scheduled and masked customers observed physical distancing. -
