Lombard During Quarantine
This TikTok video is a time lapse of the famous Lombard Street in San Francisco. Lombard Street is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors line the streets waiting for a turn to drive down the curviest street in San Francisco. Lombard Street is typically packed with cars. This time lapse shows the dramatic decrease in tourism in San Francisco during the COVID-19 pandemic as Lombard Street is nearly empty. -

At this point I miss taking BART too
This TikTok video features a college student highlighting the top San Francisco Bay Area places he wants to visit when quarantine ends. His wishes include Great American in Santa Clara, Pier 39 in San Francisco, Grizzly Peak in Berkeley, the Outlets of SF in Livermore, Ocean Beach in San Francisco, Twin Peaks in San Francisco, Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, Mission Peak in Fremont, and the Great Mall in Milpitas. The creator titled his video "At this point I miss taking BART too." BART is the public transit system that connects the Bay Area and is known for being overcrowded and often sketchy. This person must be desperate for a sense of normalcy to miss riding BART. -

The Fog Will Wait For You
This TikTok video encourages San Francisco Bay Area residents to stay at home to stop the spread of COVID-19. There is a sense of community portrayed in the video. The overall message of the video is to relax, enjoy being home and know that everyone else is at home too. The video contains iconic San Francisco images, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Victorian homes, sea lions, the Castro Theater and Twin Peaks neon signs, and a trolley. This video was produced at the start of shelter-in-place orders when many believed that if we all did our part, life would return to normal in a matter of weeks. -

Humans of Covid-19 AU: Simon
“In terms of music, the future is very uncertain. For everyone in my band, and friends who play music and survive on it, their livelihood has been turned off at the switch. It's a really weird feeling for society. Everyone in the industry knows how to hustle and change up their thing, but it’s just so uncertain. Many artists have no plans and no clear road ahead. I just started a relationship with someone a couple of months ago. Two weeks later, we went into lockdown. But it’s been really awesome. Having a good person in my life has been really important. When there’s no plans to be made, there’s a sort of a freedom when you can just focus on the day. It is nice to make everything small like that - focusing on the 14-16 waking hours and not expecting too much out of them. Simplicity has been getting me through this. The pot plants are getting a fair amount of attention...” Instagram post on Simon, musician, and his experience during the pandemic, which was created by a psychology student living in Melbourne who was interested to hear about how COVID-19 was impacting on different peoples’ lives. -

Humans of Covid-19 AU: Joshua Batten
“My album release date was set for April 3rd. I was going to organise a launch show and some other stuff. But most of the gigs and festivals where I was earning money have either been postponed or cancelled. In replacement, I’ve been doing some live-stream concerts to people all over the world. I was playing 2-3 gigs a week, and earning a good amount to get by, but since COVID19, the only income I get is from album sales, which is not much. Fortunately I still live it home, so the conditions are not that bad. But from a mental health standpoint, it really sucks not to be able to go out, see people, and play music in the traditional sense. We’ve been looking for other options, but I have really had to change course. For many artists, it is incredibly stressful. The government hasn’t offered nearly enough support in our sector. Musicians are also parents, music is their main source of income. And it’s not just the musicians; it’s the behind-the-scenes people too. It’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help. In order to support artists at this time, people can check out the website ‘I lost my gig’, Tipjar or schedule in time just to listen to new music. I think the arts industry will be one of the last things to get back on its feet.” Instagram post on Joshua Batten, musician, and his experience during the pandemic, which was created by a psychology student living in Melbourne who was interested to hear about how COVID-19 was impacting on different peoples’ lives. -

Annual Teachers' Performance: Don't Stop Believin' - Canterbur Edition
Every year, during the Christmas and end-of the-year "blockbuster" (talent show) assemblies, the entirety of the staff at Canterbury High School put on a song and dance. With schools closed this year they took it online and created video of them in their homes dedicated to the students and graduating class in particular. In choosing the song Don't Stop Believin' they shared a sentiment of hope and understand during a stressful time for students. They also made some inside references in the way they changed the words from the original song: the O-train is notoriously inconsistent and often does not run, hence going nowhere (on top of going nowhere because of restrictions due to the pandemic.) -

Liminal
When trying to remember the year, I think of the last few weeks before we left. There was something in the air that made this semester — this particular semester — feel like the end. And so, maybe we laughed harder and louder than we did before. And we cried so much more and we tried to do what we could to enjoy ourselves — to hold onto what we had left. And we had dance parties and dinner parties that made us feel alive and supported — no one was alone. Although we’ll be back at some point, it will feel like starting over again. And maybe that’s good, maybe that’s necessary. And maybe we’ll come back and say, “Hey, it’s nice to meet ya! My name is ...” because things have changed. We all will have changed. But maybe, just maybe, it will be better than before. -

Italian Husband Can't Tolerate Wife's Recorder Playing
Americans were enchanted with videos of Italians singing together from their balconies. It showed such great spirit and making the most of a most difficult situation. This particular video shows a wife who is exhibiting no musical talent at all, and the husband can't take it any more. I found this video on Instagram with the caption of "Us, tomorrow," showing that living together 24/7 is very stressful on a marriage. -

Cede
Every year there is a gathering held by an organization named WGI in Dayton Ohio for drumlines across the US to perform one last time. This is also the yearly championships that everyone has looked forward to the most because they may be able to see their friends from distant states. Also with the fact that only people the age of 22 or under are able to participate in these groups makes it even more saddening as they have to give up their last year being able to perform music with their closest friends. Although this age limit has been raised another year for all members of these groups from this year, this still doesn't make up for the fact that many people have already set plans for after they finish as well. Overall all these people have to give up all their hard work trying to audition for groups and long hours of practice. Not being able to have one final moment with their closest peers as sometimes people aren't able to attend high school together and have no other way of seeing them again. This virus has taken so much away from people whether it's the last moments of high school or the last time being able to perform and watch your closest friends perform. -

What Could've Been Choir Memories
This is about the things I've missed in choir because of the pandemic. Because of coronavirus, my choir and I couldn't go do our festivals which we could've meet other choirs. We were supposed to go to Knotts Berry farm and Universal Studios. We were supposed to sing one of my favorite songs, Hey Jude, in our last concert. This pandemic has taken a lot from many students, not only us. I can't help but feel bad for our seniors in choir especially those who were in choir for all fours years of their highschool life. -

Michael passed away this month; he will be terribly missed by all of us. Music: A Light During the Pandemic
This entry focuses on the transition to online learning in order to practice social distancing. Prior to the pandemic, I would have to wake up early to go to school. Then, I'd quickly run home after school, so that I would be punctual to my guitar lesson. As the tide has turned, this is no longer my reality. Now, I do online schooling and guitar lessons within the comfort of my own room, at any hour of the day. An hour of light-hearted life chats, bluesy riffs, and all sorts of musical banter relieves my good friend, guitar teacher, and myself of our quarantine blues. This is us, this is our quarantine lyfe. -

Walnut Creek Brewery, Calicraft, Launches Quarantine Blues Juicy IPA, Live Song
Calicraft, a brewery located in Walnut Creek, California, launched "the Quarantine Blues Juicy IPA" during the state's shelter-in-place. Restaurants and bars across the state are struggling to stay in business and some establishments, like Calicraft Brewing Company, are finding creative ways to drive business despite the difficult conditions. I discovered the beer on Memorial Day and it brought some much needed levity to the day. The label includes a clever poem/song that reads: Sittin' on the porch, got nothin' to do. Grab yourself a can of the Quarantine Blues. Kidz going crazy, you could use a little hazy. Crack yourself a can of the Quarantine Blues. Runnin' outta TP, makes you feel kinda queasy. Pour yourself a glass of the Quarantine Blues! Drink up: at home. Pair with: Tiger King, Homemade Bread. calicraft.com // @califcraft #ASU #HST580 #SanFranciscoBayArea -

Friday the 13th
On Friday the 13th of March 2020, Garden Grove High School's Orchestra program was set for their 2nd festival of the season. We were supposed to leave school at 1:30pm and bus all the way to Beckman High School in Irvine, California, 30 minutes away. But of course, Friday the 13th was a bad omen, and it was no exception this time. The festival was cancelled the morning of, at 8am. Once we were told so, anyone in our classroom would tell you that a gust of sadness engulfed the room. We had worked endlessly since August for our short performance but it was all gone to waste. 8 hours later, at 4pm while I was at Track practice, everyone got the news that school would be cancelled for a month. By then, our concert season would only be halfway through so we were hopeful. Unfortunately, school had been cancelled until the end of the school year and our performing arts program will, no doubt, be suffering in the aftermath of this pandemic. Friday the 13th really is a bad sign. -

Boris Johnson: Stayin' Alert
The video entails a spoof of the song 'Stayin' Alive' by the Bee Gees, changed to 'Stayin' Alert' to poke fun at the government Coronavirus briefing on 10/05/2020 where PM Boris Johnson addressed the public about how lockdown would change. The government's COVID-19 slogan changed from 'Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives' became 'Stay alert, control the virus, save lives'. The general reaction from the public was a negative one at the advent of this new slogan, prompting many spoof videos and memes to be released. The briefing that the new slogan was announced in was also considered by the public to be generally confusing, contradictory, and unhelpful. -

Tokyo Gov Koike - Mitsu des EDM Remix
In April 2020, as the Japanese national government dragged its feet on declaring a state of emergency or taking other strong actions, Gov. Koike Yuriko of Tokyo began holding daily TV appearances in which he encouraged the people of Tokyo to take responsible steps, including closing shops, working from home, allowing your employees to work from home, wearing masks, etc, as well as to avoid "the three Mitsu," meaning places which are crowded, closed-in, and involve close interaction. A video game was then released in which you play as Gov. Koike, going around Tokyo and telling people "Mitsu desu!" ("You're too close!", or more literally, "this is crowding!"). This video remixes her statements into an amusing EDM soundtrack. -

Performing Arts Keeps Tradition Alive
For nearly half a century the Suffolk community has gathered to celebrate Suffolk arts and culture with a fun-filled variety show. The show has taken a variety of formats over the year and at one time even featured a baking competition. This year, for the first time ever, SpringFest will be happening in homes around the world. Find out where to tune in for the show at 7 p.m. Friday, April 24. "We made a 'show-must-go-on' decision," said Suffolk Performing Arts Director Kristin Baker. "We reached out to students, faculty, staff, and alumni across the globe, and they have responded to the call. In a lot of ways, this event has showcased who we are at Suffolk, honoring our traditions while being flexible enough to adapt to new circumstances. We are creatively pulling together as a community to support one another." -
