Amid COVID-19 Crisis, Duterte Regime Seeks to Discredit Indigenous Humanitarian Organizers in the Philippines
"In 2019, Cultural Survival's Keepers of the Earth Fund provided a small grant to the Cordillera Peoples Alliance. This grant helped CPA and its collaboration with the Kaling Peoples of Kalinga province to launch the “Let the Chico River Flow Free” campaign, which aimed to educate Indigenous communities on their rights to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), particularly as it related to a series of hydropower projects carried out by the Philippine government that threatened the environment and livelihood of the Kalinga Peoples." -

COVID-19 places Iran’s nomadic pastoralists at a crossroads
"Nomadic pastoralists in Iran play an important role in national food security and sovereignty.1 Since the arrival of COVID-19, they have been deeply concerned about the impact that the pandemic is likely to have on them. Their recently established national platform, the Union of Indigenous Nomadic Tribes of Iran (UNINOMAD),2 is taking action. UNINOMAD outlined its members’ concerns and proposed solutions in a letter sent to key national authorities on 10 March. We will outline the main points of the letter and reflect on what the overall situation might mean for nomadic pastoralism in Iran." -

More Than 300 Groups in Abya Yala Demand Structural Change Due to COVID
"“A coalition of more than 300 social, indigenous, peasant, union, and community organizations from multiple Latin American countries have launched a “’Call of the Original Peoples, Afro-descendants and Popular Organizations of Latin America’”, to make demands for immediate structural changes in the face of the global pandemic crisis…Indigenous, ethnic and social movement organizations recognize the urgency of correcting the economic course of our countries. The economic inertia of the neoliberal regimes that for more than 30 years have defined the path of our countries, has definitely entered a crisis. The dismantling of the public health system, without the installation of adequate services to respond to the current COVID-19 pandemic, has shown that the course followed places life on this planet at risk. Some governments in the region, instead of protective measures, have opted for authoritarian measures, militarization, economic cuts, and massive layoffs. They highlight how this crisis has exposed the brutality of patriarchal violence against women and sexual diversities, further increasing the exclusion of “’indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples exposed to facing the pandemic in conditions of extreme vulnerability.’”" -

LGBT Africans Share Challenges of Life During Pandemic
This press release from the Human Rights Watch discusses a new podcast called AfroQueer. It discusses a variety of topics and how issues faced by LGBT Africans have been compounded by Covid-19. As a white gay man living in the United States, it is disturbing and saddening to learn of the plight of LGBTQ people in other countries and how these problems can be exacerbated by race. The theme that is emerging in marginalized communities is that the world won't stop its oppression of their identity and personhood, even during a global pandemic. -

Historic donation leads to Choctaw-Ireland scholarship
“The $170 donated by Choctaw leaders in 1847 — or “Black ’47,” as the Irish who survived the rampant starvation, disease and exposure remembered it — would today have amounted to over $5,000, historians estimate. At that time, the Choctaw were still grappling with their own grief and loss, caused by the abuses of a colonial government a decade earlier, and they appear to have seen their own suffering reflected in a people over 4,000 miles away. The donation has since inspired three visits between heads of state in both nations, the construction of an iconic stainless steel sculpture in Ireland’s County Cork, a poetry collaboration between Choctaw author LeAnne Howe and Irish poet Doireann Ní Ghríofa, dance performances of welcome, music that aspires to merge Irish “trad” with Indigenous rhythms and a scholarship.” -

Homeless being turned away as cool weather pushes Safe Space shelter to capacity
As Tasmanians, saturated in the flood of online media content, look on at the state of the world, feelings range from extreme anxiety, compassion with those in crisis centres, to smug repose (“at least we are not in that country”). This last response seems particularly rife today, but it struggles to conceal an inherent coldness which we don’t otherwise normally like to attribute to ourselves. Not only does this attitude overlook that fact that we have our own dead, or that the cost of life is of a value that far outpaces numerical value (comparing our figures with death-tolls in other places), we ignore those without home in the very place in which all of us are meant to dwell together. Prior to the lockdown, Tasmania’s capital city Hobart underwent a housing crisis. But as we wait on Canberra to get things moving along - exactly as they were before or, even better than before - we should keep in mind that not everything is possible just because money is behind it. To return to the housing crisis: this challenges all of us to think about our responsibility towards those forgotten in our own home. Genuine responsibility begins with compassion, not money. I feel like, too often, we reverse the formula. -

Masks for Donations- Hospice of the Valley
When the suggestions came out for being safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, I made a couple of masks for myself and they turned out to be really nice. Having a lot of leftover quilting fabrics, I decided I could make masks for my friends and co-workers. I noticed online that people were making masks and charging for them, with some costing up to $20 each. I didn't want to profit from the pandemic but I did want to 'make a difference', so I decided to suggest that each mask recipient make a voluntary donation to Hospice of the Valley. (Hospice has been caring for my 100 year old cousin and I thought this would be a nice way to give back and show my appreciation for all they have done through the years for my family.) Happily, everyone who ordered masks gave me a donation check with some being more than generous! Yesterday, I took the first batch of checks to Hospice and presented them to Lin Sue Cooney, Director of Community Engagement. They were so appreciative and I am so thankful for all those who contributed. Amidst all of the bad news about COVID-19, I feel like I created some good news for a change. I am getting pleasure out of creating some fun masks for people to wear to stay healthy, the donors will receive a Hospice receipt for a tax deduction, and Hospice will benefit from their donations. It's a win, win, win!!! Pictures from left to right: Me in 1 of my masks 2. another mask, 3. my work station, a.k.a. kitchen table, 4. me and my sewing machine, 5. Hospice of the Valley, 6. Today (5/1/20), bandcamp.com is waiving all of its revenue so all money from purchases will go directly to artists. Bandcamp is a music-sharing platform where artists or labels can directly upload music for purchase. Today, I purchased a compilation of B-sides, demos, and covers from a bunch of musicians. The compilation is called "The Song is Coming from Inside the House" and all proceeds will go to the Groundswell Rapid Response Fund which provides fast funding to grassroots organizations led by women of color, trans people of color, and low-income women and trans people in critical, but unexpected, fights to protect and advance reproductive and social justice, including mutual aid societies, rent moratoriums, and digital organizing. -

Notes From an Essential Worker Series #2
The COVID-19 virus disrupts life, particularly our relationships with those we love. But, relationships are flexible and adapt to circumstance. Due to the stress the virus puts on her non-profit organization, my mom must leave earlier for work and cannot see my dad in the morning. So, in addition to leaving notes for my brothers and I, she leaves a few for him. Most of these notes offer him encouragement, as working remotely is a stressful change for most people. Next to her note, she leaves a coffee filter filled with coffee grinds, so he can make his cup of morning joe. Although my mom cannot do these things in person anymore, she still lets my dad know shes there for him. #FordhamUniversity #VART3030 -

Low Barrier COVID-19 Cultural Relief Grants, MACCNO, New Orleans, LA
While numerous non-profits created grants to assist New Orleans musicians out of work due to COVID-19, many required financial paperwork and immediate access to a computer. Many of New Orleans culture bearers most in need were unable to apply for assistance. MaCCNO created a low barrier grant to assist these folks. The document reads: "MaCCNO remains committed to ensuring all members of our cultural community have access to relief during the COVID-19 crisis, but we know many musicians, traditional culture bearers, and other cultural practitioners are struggling to access the resources they need. To meet that challenge, drawing from the lessons learned by Sweet Home New Orleans, we have launched our own “low barrier” $250 mini-grants, which are available to members of the cultural community who work/practice in and around New Orleans. To date, we've already given out nearly 100 grants to working musicians, street performers, Black Masking Indians, dancers, Social Aid and Pleasure Club members, burlesque performers, and many others. Grants are distributed on a rolling basis, so the more money we can raise, the more people we can assist. We know those most in need of aid are often the least likely to be able to access it, so we are operating via referrals, proactively reaching out to members of the cultural community who then connect us with people they know are in need (however, self-referrals are also possible). When we connect with a person in need of aid, we conduct a roughly 10 minute intake session over the phone. Once complete, funds are distributed via Paypal, CashApp, or paper check as soon as possible. Priority is given to those aged 70+ and individuals who are having difficulty accessing other forms of financial assistance." -

Service Learning with Suffolk University Madrid Campus
[Giana worked as a volunteer in Haven for Hunger food pantry]“By exposing myself to people who were affected the most by the spread of COVID-19 I was able to recognize my privilege in a pandemic that affects everyone. This has made me immensely more aware of the resources I have access to day-to-day. Similarly to what is said by Dylan Santos on page 169 of Harkins, “it is one thing to theoretically learn about the struggles that others face; it’s another to hear from the people who are struggling and see what that looks like for each individual person”. With both of my service-learning experiences, I was able to interact with the people who are discarded, and especially in regard to COVID-19, so many of these people are viewed as a number or a statistic. Through this experience, I was able to humanize and finally see who was being affected the most. I have already signed up for future volunteer opportunities and I fully intend to continue expanding what I already know.” -

Fundraiser: Solidarity for the Unhoused, New Orleans, LA
A fundraiser to provide assistance to New Orleans unhoused population. The fundraiser description is as follows: "There are reportedly 1200 unhoused people in New Orleans. More than 420 of them live on the street where they are deprived of access to running water, soap, shelter, and basic food supplies. This makes them a particularly vulnerable group during the Covid 19 pandemic in addition to the hardships and exploitations they already endure. Very little is being done on a federal level to service this population. Despite reports that the homeless people of New Orleans are being relocated to local hotels, only 175 of them have been relocated thus far. The immobile, those who experience mental instability, those who do not speak English and the undocumented will face difficulties assessing the already limited shelter even if more is provided. We are distributing supplies and food daily to those on the street, while attempting to share social distancing guidelines and information about resources throughout the city. Additionally, we are following CDC guidelines while preparing and distributing food." -
