"Witnesses say there was very little physical distancing." "Just after 8:00 p.m., police were called to the Mooney's Bay area, where they started turning cars and residents away. Our First Trip Out
My kids and I have not left our street since March due to the continual rise in cases. Despite an all time high and no desire to venture out, my Girl Scout troop needed their cookie prizes and the materials for our end of the year, virtual “Bridging” ceremony. I decided to drop the items on the girls’ doorsteps, wearing a mask, and not actually ring a doorbell but instead text from the safety of my car. Basically, run out, run back to the car. To do so, I enlisted my mom (who lives with us) to drive to lessen the variables for infection. Realizing my kids might want to see the world outside our street, I allowed them to ride in the car. I figured the risk was minimal because I was coming into contact with no one. Both kids have been keeping “quarantine” journals and I found their reflections interesting. My daughter was agitated that so many people we saw were not wearing masks. When we went out, our area had just been re-opened, despite a continual rise in cases. Our state has seen an 80% increase over the last two weeks and, as of today, is re-closing “indoor businesses.” My son, on the other hand, seemed relieved to see that McDonald’s still existed and had an open sign. He told us he was happy everything was “in order.” It makes me wonder what he thought was happening beyond our street. I did stop to take one picture, of our local playground. I was so surprised that every park we passed had the playgrounds roped off. It makes sense, but was eerie to see. I don’t foresee us venturing out again soon. -

During California's shelter-in-place orders, a trumpeter serenades local residents on an empty lawn in front of San Francisco's Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. I saw the slide while on a walk in the morning. My local playground had been shut down and taped up to prevent children playing. I wanted to photograph it to show how the pandemic had changed even basic activities like taking children to a playground. -

Protect Your Fellow Citizens...Please.
Affixed to the jungle gym at Sunset Park in west Wichita, Kansas, this sign encourages Wichitans to protect each other and prevent COVID-19's spread by adopting the listed measures. This photo was taken against the backdrop of rising case numbers in Kansas, as well as in neighboring Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas, as local authorities in Sedgwick County opted to continue re-opening without imposing any restrictions to mitigate the virus's transmission. Given the local government's "hands-off" approach, the effectiveness of any and all mitigation efforts rested solely with citizens' willingness to cooperate. -

The Sound of Silence: COVID Summer 2020
On June 24, 2020, the city of Wichita, Kansas, announced that it would not open any of the city's municipal water parks, splash pads, or swimming pools for the duration of the summer. Pools like west Wichita's Harvest Park, shown here, would normally be teeming with people on hot summer days, but COVID-19 defied public health officials' predictions of a summer remission, with case numbers surging across the South and Central Plains. Kansas suffered an influx of summer COVID infections due in part to a politically-driven, decentralized re-opening plan that devolved authority to county commissions and local officials, while relegating what had once been mandatory state executive orders to mere "suggestions." With Kansas and surrounding states grappling with widespread illnesses, the summer of 2020 was marked by empty pools and filling hospitals. -

Social Distancing Circles
San Francisco parks are the cultural heart of the city. From Golden Gate Park to Dolores Park to Washington Square Park, each park has a unique personality. On a sunny day, which can be rare in this foggy city by the Bay, parks are typically full of locals sharing picnics, music and lawn games. A day at a San Francisco park when the sun is shining reminds many city dwellers of the reason why they continue to live in a city largely covered in fog for most of the year. As California began to lift the shelter-in-place orders at the end of May, San Francisco residents encountered social distancing circles. These circles were painted on the lawn of San Francisco's most popular parks to remind and encourage visitors to keep their distance from others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both the San Francisco Chronicle and Reuters chose to highlight social distancing circles in San Francisco's famous Dolores Park. I am at once impressed by the measures the city is taking to encourage social distancing and the apparent respect that park patrons have for the social distancing circles. And also shocked at how many San Francisco residents are choosing to visit parks during a pandemic. -

An Afternoon at Kiwanis Park
After weeks of quarantine at home, my partner and I decided to try and get out of our house and do something fun. We decided that a park would be most safe, so we donned our masks and headed to Kiwanis Park in Tempe to play some Pokemon Go. Although there were there numerous signs outlining specific measures to keep park-goers safe, the park was split about 50-50 in terms of people wearing and not wearing masks. As we left the park, I heard one woman loudly complaining to her friend "So now I'm supposed to prioritize other people's safety over my comfort?" She was, of course, not wearing a mask. -

Dogs in Quarantine
Although its mostly been humans that are being affected by the quarantine and coronavirus, our pets are also feeling the struggle. Parks both human and dog alike have been closed to enforce social distancing guidelines, leading to some sad dogs. Here's hoping that as summer starts a little bit more time outside is in store for everyone. -

Pandemic underscores a lack of affordable housing, homeless issues in B.C.
News article discussing the issues around providing safe and equitable housing the homeless people of BC during the pandemic, from tent cities to block booked hotel rooms and the effect they have had on the homeless population and neighbours. "The B.C. government’s effort to get people off the street has meant profound changes for hundreds of people, including Mr. LeBlanc. The process has also resulted in anger and dismay from neighbourhood residents wondering whether the solution put together in response to a pandemic has resulted in new problems. The process has also underscored the dire shortage of affordable housing throughout the province, a problem that existed long before the pandemic and has become more visible as people are being urged to stay home even though some may not have that option." -

Date in Dog Park
These photos were taken in a dog park in an early morning. This is the first time I went out for a walk with my boyfriend so early to watch the sunrise although we didn't see the sun on that cloud day. It was fun to take off my mask on the street without people to breathe in the fresh air during this hard time. Covid-19 changes our way to date, from city to wilderness, from theatre, coffee shop to the parks and lakes. -

The Pandemic-Plagued Playground
Although Sedgwick County Park remained open to visitors, all playground equipment were off limits, thus reflecting the virus's stealthy transmission via children. Should a child contract the virus, they seldom exhibit symptoms but can easily pass it to adults. Measures such as those depicted in this photo therefore proved to be vital in mitigating COVID-19's spread. Northeastern University -

Schoolyard Closure and Basketball Players Ignoring It
Attached to the permanent, metal private property sign at the edge of the yard of St. Thomas More Catholic School, is depicted a plasticized sign announcing that “Due to COVID-19 these school grounds are CLOSED except for walk through” by authority of the Ottawa Catholic School Board. In the background, across the grounds, at the basketball hoops attached to the school, three young men can be seen flouting the signs posted at several entrances in order to shoot hoops. Provincial restrictions have been relaxed since this photograph was taken, allowing for sunbathing and distant sports, such as tennis, in public spaces, however, the school grounds are private property and the signs remain. There has been an increase in activity around the basketball hoops since this announcement. -

Birthday wishes during a pandemic can still come true.
Maya wanted to celebrate her 6th birthday at the pool. Per state law, Arizona pools were closed. I even tried local hotels to see if any would let me rent a room in order to access the pool. No luck. In the end, we decided to bend some local rules and try to swim in Rio Salado, gaining access via the boat launch. We swam in the warm water for about an hour before a park official warned us that the police could ticket us. It was almost nap time for the 1 yo, and we were ready to leave anyway. It wasn't a pool, but we did get to swim. The day was declared a success by my 6yo who declared it "the best birthday ever." Covid Playground
This is a photo I took while out for a walk at a park that I grew up by. It was a park I had been going to all my life, and a playground that saw me as a 3 year old. Never in my life have I seen it closed. But on that day, I saw a sign that declared it closed until further notice, to stop the spread of the virus. It was straight out of fiction to me, because I had never seen anything like it. I was shocked, and had another of the (too common nowadays) moments of "wow, this is really happening." -

“I would say that covid-19 has made me more..."
“I would say that covid-19 has made me more... put more of my faith into God because when the world gets affected by pandemics such as this it can cause a lot of havoc on the world and if anything God is the one person you want to turn to in times like this.” “As far as like the community goes the only other two people I talk to about God is my parents and I know that my dad and stepmom have been attending services through like livestreams. Personally, I stopped going to church when I came out of high school. Should probably be going more often but it hasn't changed my religious views or any type of service that I've attended.” -

Ordering tacos during COVID19 pandemic.
Typically I visit this taco shop with my friends after skateboarding at a nearby skate park. Now, after skateboarding by myself, I stop by Taco Nazo, alone, to find a very organized system of delivering food to customers. The bustling atmosphere of the restaurant has been replaced by gentle reminders to wear a mask (even though I am in my car—I’m fine with this!) and orderly direction where to park to await my order. While the aromas, textures, and flavors of food are still comforting, the companionship, laughter, stories, and closeness to friends makes once banal gatherings seem distant, even impossible. New rituals of eating have emerged. What was once a ritual of culinary communion is now one of reflection and solitude. -

Suspending the Northville Placid Trail Challenge
The Northville-Lake Placid Trail is the one long distance hiking trail (136 miles) in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Each year, hikers can receive an award for completing their hike of the trail, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Adirondack Mountain Club cancelled the challenge.
