Basketball Court Without Any Hoops [PRIVATE]
This image shows how the city of Charlotte has cracked down on recreational areas. Previously, the nets on the rims had only been tied up. But people found a way to untie the nets and keep playing. This harsher action by the city shows how serious the measures are becoming to slow the spread. I took the picture. -

Our Forgotten Parks
May 5th, 2020 COVID-19 has a larger impact than just our economy and the shut in of our population. With schools being closed and classes being moved to online, it is also our public education that is being afflicted by this virus. While economic recessions come and go, missed opportunities for education are sometimes looked over and forgotten, missing their mark on improving someone’s life. Many parks, historical sites, and zoos are currently closed and unable to provide the people an opportunity to explore the world around them. The photo above is the Salem Pioneer Village in Forest River Park and offers a genuine educational look at the puritan ways of life in early Salem. The park offers tours and select hours of operation, meaning it isn’t always open for the public. So a forced closure of this public park has a significant impact, very similar to many other locations that are not privately owned. While this park is small, there are many very large parks that are completely closed and inaccessible to the public. Some of these places being of significance, Acadia National Park, the only national park in New England is currently closed. Another is the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, better known as the AT, is currently closed off to hikers during the best time of the year to accomplish this great feat. COVID-19 will present a significant obstacle in the recovering phase of many of the parks and educational sites throughout the U.S.; however, it does provide an opportunity for nature to relax and not deal with human interaction. -

"Phase 2: First Day at the Park"
As Phase II begins in this lovely sunny day of the late Spring season, in the heart of Italy, Rome, people from all around take their first breaths of fresh air after 2 months of strict quarantine in the biggest park of the city: Villa Pamphili. As I find a large space where dancing respectfully of the social distancing normative is possible, or to simply hear the sound of nature, I acknowledge the beauty of our mother earth, taking a moment to breath in, even if through a face mask, the gifts that she offers us and that are often forgotten about. How wonderful it is to return to this small piece of life. -

Enjoying Spring at the Park
This image was taken by me on one if my walks around a local park. I have been going to this park since I was three years old. Ever since the stay-at-home order was give for NC at the end of March I have noticed a much greater diversity in the demographics of people who visit the park.Traditionally the park would be populated by younger children, around elementary and middle school aged, along with young parents and their children. Now people of all types and ages frequent the park in an attempt to help normalize and adjust the the changes caused by the pandemic. Something I never expected to enjoy while going to the park is being able to see so many different people playing happily and making the best of the situation. Seeing others adjusting to the pandemic, in a way helps me accept the normalization of the changing social dynamics that have been created. -

Revisiting the Parking Lot Where I Learned How to Drive
I currently live in Chicago with my mother, stepfather, and my four little siblings. Because of the pandemic, all playgrounds are closed and fenced off with biohazard tape (which, I find amusing). Lots of large parks are open, but these days they tend to get oddly crowded when it's nice outside. On this beautiful afternoon, we decided to take the kids to ride their bikes in the large and unused parking lot of the Basic Wire & Cable Company, a very out of the way spot where I learned how to ride a bike and drive a car. #DePaulHST391 -

City Park COVID-19 Signage, New Orleans, LA
During the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, New Orleanians have flocked to the city's parks to get fresh air, exercise, and socialize. Enforcing social distancing rules in the parks is a grave concern for many trying to halt the spread of the virus. This large sign entitled "COVID-19: Social Distancing in Public Parks and Trails" is on display at the entrance of City Park and details what steps visitors should take to prevent the spread of the virus while outdoors. -

Parc de la Distance
Tom Ravenscroft for Dezeen: "Austria-based studio Precht has designed a maze-like park divided by high hedges that would allow people to be outdoors while maintaining social distance during the coronavirus pandemic. The park would have numerous routes divided by 90-centimetre-wide hedges to maintain a safe physical distance between its visitors. Arranging the paths in a finger print-shaped swirl pattern creates many routes that can be used simultaneously. Each of the red-granite gravel paths through the park would be around 600 metres long and circulate visitors from the edge of the park to the centre, where fountains would be located, and back round. Gates on the entrances and exits to each of the routes, which would take around 20 minutes to walk, would indicate if a route is occupied. The park is proposed for a vacant plot in Vienna, where the famous Schönbrunn and Belvedere parks are currently closed." -

Tree Limb Peace Sign
This post describes an activity related to the peace sign behind it. The post reads "Peace. Please take a power stick. Place it in your yard to remind you of [peace sign] and allow the birds to pick the yarn for their nests." To my mind, this community project shows the need to take actions to combat a sense of futility. Parks are more important than ever in this time when walking outside is one of the only safe ways to be outdoors. It's nice to see the community making an intentional, active use of this park. -

Tree Limb Peace Sign
Regular walks have taken on new importance for me amid the stress-inducing experience of living in a time of uncertainty. Watching the incremental emergence of spring has been more than a little therapeutic. On April 11, on a walk through Cumberland Park, I noticed that someone had arranged tree limbs into a giant peace sign in a former picnic area. Six days later, I passed by the same spot. Many sticks wrapped in various colors of yarn now lay in the middle of the peace sign, along with a post that explained the purpose of the sticks, inviting people to take a stick home so that birds could pick the yarn for their nests. I like how the community is appropriating spaces in the park to take small actions to restore a sense of agency, however small. -

Journal of the Plague Year entry 2- Logan Bellos
When I was younger, my parents called me the nature boy because I was so invested in being amongst nature and spent almost all my free time outside. However as I got older, although I still had an strong interest in nature, I began to spend more of my time inside, playing videos games or at friends houses doing typical stupid teenager things. However, I have recently revived my inner nature boy due to these tough times, going on frequent hikes by myself or with my dogs and have been having so much fun in doing so. Nature has given me freedom to continue to be myself, during these unprecedented times and now I'm beginning to wonder why I ever stopped embracing nature in the first place! -

Birds keep building nests
This is a photo I took while walking in the park. It is nothing extraordinary it is just a picture of a leafless tree with several birds nests sitting in its branches. I took it because I remember feeling really off that day. I had that feeling in my stomach and arms, the feeling you get where you are anxious but you do not fully know why. Work was hectic, outside seemed to quiet to be outside and something about this tree captured a normalcy I wished I felt part of at the time. I can not say this virus is what scares me. I am not underestimating the abilities of an illness with no vaccine but I feel if anything, it is people that have scared me. The second it seems that the world is not working in our favor we have turned against one another, hoarded, fought, been unsympathetic in nature to the only other beings that can truly understand how we feel. While all the while, the birds remain unfazed, building their nests in their trees. -

Social Distancing Golf
OK- disclaimer- my husband does not play golf.....However, I know that many of our friends who do are chomping at the bit to get back to their games. I couldn't resist setting up this shot on a recent hike in Mueller State Park. As you can see, the "golf ball" is a beautifully formed pine cone........and the club - a hiking pole. Also notice "Bacon Rock" as the perfect backdrop. -

Deep Snow and empty trail

Social Distancing Cars at Mueller State Park Colorado
My husband and I are fortunate enough to live near the beautiful and uncrowded (except during "leaf peeping" season) Mueller State Park. In ordinary times most hikers are very thoughtful and move to the side on narrow trails to let others get by. I was pleasantly surprised that this courtesy was extended to placement of parked cars!! (not sure why the map won't show Divide so I'm entering the closest town Woodland Park) -

Email Cancelling Disney College Program Fall Advantage 2020
The picture I have included in this post is a copy of the email sent out to many of the upcoming Disney College Program Participants. Unfortunately, all the future Disney Cast Members who were scheduled to arrive in May were notified that their program was cancelled. I was accepted to participate in the Disney College Program for the Fall Program, and I am supposed to arrive in August. Due to my arrival date, my program is still scheduled to proceed as planned. My heart goes out to all the students who had gotten their hopes up and made plans to work and live in Disney World for the rest of the year. I can’t fathom how devastating that must be for them. And, while this cancellation doesn’t directly affect me, it does scare me. Even though my program is still scheduled to proceed, that could change any day and I too could receive the devastating email stating that my program has been cancelled. Honestly, I don’t really know how to feel. While I’m happy that I am still scheduled to go, I know that it could be taken away from me at any minute. I am truly sorry for the Spring 2020 and Fall Advantage 2020 students whose programs were cut short or completely cancelled. In response to this email, my student advisor thought that it would be a good idea to register for Fall 2020 classes at my college just in case the Disney College Program doesn’t work. While I’m glad that I have a plan to fall back on if necessary, I wish I didn’t have to. When I received my acceptance email to the Disney College Program, it was one of the most exciting moments of my life because this is something that I have wanted to do for years. And the thought that it could be taken away and I would have to come up with a Plan B is really disheartening. -
