Can't go home
I was an Chinese international student studying in UCI. Because of COVID-19, I lost my job, which interrupted my plan and made me graduate in advance. However, I found out because of COVID-19 and difficult relationship between China and U.S, most of flights were cancelled. I bought tickets for three times, but they were all cancelled. Finally, I bought a ticket costing me more than 12000$, which is so expensive and make me guilty to my parents. -

Stay at home to fight cornavirus
When I have heard covid 19 is coming and will be spread in the world, I tried my best to hoard supplies, including toilet papers, foods, seasonings and some daily necessities. When I saw the news from website in America, I think it must be joke that president Trump's sayings. From the local news of China, i have deeply understood the urgency and destruction of covid 19. I tried my best to talk to my friends and prepared to face the challenge of covid 19. Afterwards, I shared some stories of Wuhan and told them how to protect themselves. I really admired the spirits of medical staffs and their ambitions to fight against virus. That power gave me a strong movement to live well and protect myself. Under the huge disaster, we need have our own judge and do not only listen to somone's sayings. “Nip in the bud!" Try to listen more about experience that people around you. -

Racism and Covid-19
The screen shot is group chat history on the app WeChat, between Chinese students who live in an apartment community in Santa Ana. One student is sharing his own experience with the others in the same apartment that he got attacked in the elevator by two white men. The two white men was very unhappy to be in the same elevator with the young Chinese man and said to him that Chinese people brought the corona virus to the US and they asked him to leave the US. The other students in the group chat supported him and said if something like this happen again he should ask for help in the group chat. -

First Lunch in Quarantine
When I arrived in China from the United States, I was sent to a hotel to quarantine for 14 days. This was the first lunch in my quarantine. There are 2 meats and 2 vegetables and 1 soup, which tasted very good. I thought it was a special treat in the first day, but the following 13 days was all in the same standard in terms of diet. The variety and quality of food even exceeded some restaurants. I also have fruits, milk, and bread every afternoon. The most important thing was, all the food, including fruit, milk, and bread, was totally free. And despite of the fact that I lived in a luxury hotel, I did not have to pay for it. The government paid for all the expenses during quarantine. The purpose was to alleviate people's financial burden so they would not have intention to reject a test or pretend to be normal when they are actually infected. However, with an excessive number of people entering China, people, many of whom were students studying abroad in foreign countries like US, had to pay the fees by themselves. This was not a big problem for them. After all, they could afford it. And compared with staying in the United States, which faced upon a great risk of explosive growth of confirmed cases, they would definitely choose to be in China no matter of what. -

2019 nCov and travel bans
The outbreak has made the relationship between China and the United States very tense. As an international student in the United States, I cannot buy a plane ticket back to China, and my friend who is going to study in the United States in China may not be able to successfully enroll in the fall semester. A few years ago, I thought globalization was a big trend and countries began to cooperate with each other in a friendly way. But now, everything seems to get changed. I would like to experience more of the beauty of different countries in the world and hope that the future can return to the era of globalization. -

Medical Personnel Taking a Nap
It was March 18. All my finals were either canceled or optional. Although there were about only a thousand confirmed cases in the United States, after studying the patterns of confirmed cases in China and European countries like Italy, I decided to return to China, where the virus was under control in many aspects, especially compared to the United States at that time. I booked a ticket in the afternoon and flew at midnight that day -- this was how urgent it was for me, but most people did not realize the United States was actually at a high risk. All people arriving in China from abroad were required to be quarantined for 14 days. People were distributed based on their destinations. Every destination has an assigned shuttle to pick people up and transport them to a designated quarantine hotel. It was very late and I was waiting for the shuttle. I walked around, looking for a restroom and when I walked close to a medical personnel, he immediately woke up. It was very hot but he had no choice but to wear the protective suit. I couldn't believe he needed to wear it all day long. Every time thinking of this, respect comes out of my heart for the great efforts of Chinese people to control the virus. -

COVID-19 Pandemic in Wuhan, China
I collect images, memes, articles and screenshot to show how people live under the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Poeple are forced to wear mask when outside, including children. Thousands of volunteers went to Wuhan and help people prevent the pandemic. -

process of recovering of China
From middle of Jan to the end of Feb, China took around 1 month long recovering from the attack by cover-19. By doing lockdown policy on Wuhan and executing quarantine policy to other provinces, China rapidly control the growth of confirmed cases. Quaratine policy strongly help restricting the growth of cases in other provinces and the whole country gather all resources around(food and medical resources) to Wuhan to pull Wuhan out of the trap from cover-19. -

How Chinese government fight with Covid-19
when the first discovery of the new coronavirus, immediately published, and open and transparent data, to promote the new coronavirus hazards and protection measures. Since the new coronavirus is spread by droplets produced when people speak again , we should minimize human contact . First of all, we must close the country to reduce external communication. Secondly, serious areas should be closed cities, the implementation of home orders throughout the country. The importance of universal wear masks and disinfection of clothes out of the home. Even in less serious places, strict lying in and out of the population should be strictly restricted, and the public began to be tested in large quantities for nucleic acids. Close all public places, prohibit public gatherings, and open only supermarkets. A substantial increase in the production of medical equipment. For severe areas, build hospitals for outbreaks. In the highway, railway station, airport, etc. , all have to set up detection points to carry out temperature measurements on people. Limit the number of people entering and leaving the community , and check the temperature of all people in and out of the area . Elevators in the district are disinfected three times a day, and the property needs to be doored to the owner twice a day to measure the temperature. Promote an app that we call a health code here and require all citizens to use it. Its main function is to be able to grasp the human movement trajectory, such as entering shopping malls and supermarkets by bus subway to protect the train will require to sweep this health code. The health app is set to three models the first of three is that green indicates that it was not exposed to neo-coronavirus contamination before the data update date, while yellow indicates that it may have been exposed to neo-coronary virus contamination within 14 days, needs to contact the local health service center, try not to go out to be isolated at home, red indicates that within 14 days with new coronary patients have been in close contact with the CDC ice and medical isolation. The outbreak ended and the economy began to recover, but residents were asked to wear masks because the outbreak could return at any time. Help countries that have helped China fight the outbreak, send experienced medical teams and donate medical supplies. For other countries in need, trafficking in medical supplies. -

The High Price of food during the coronavirus lockdown in China
The virus crisis is testing China’s ability to feed its 1.4 billion people, one of the Communist Party’s proudest achievements. Cooped up at home and fearful that the epidemic could last weeks or even months, families across China are hoarding provisions, making it harder for shops and supermarkets to keep fresh food in stock. Many places have closed off roads to passing traffic, slowing truck shipments and raising freight costs. -

China's anti-epidemic hero — Wenliang Li
Wenliang Li was a doctor ophthalmologist who warned about the outbreak of COVID-19. Born in Beizhen, China, on Oct 12, 1986, he died after becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Wuhan, China, on Feb 7, 2020, aged 33 years. On Dec 30, 2019, Li Wenliang sent a message to a group of fellow doctors warning them about a possible outbreak of an illness that resembled severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, where he worked. In fact, Li was one of the first people to recognize the outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Wuhan. Li returned to work after signing the statement and was infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 ( SARS-CoV-2), obviously from the patient. His death caused an uproar in China. The Chinese people expressed their gratitude for Li Guangyao's full-time service on the message board and criticized the preliminary reaction of Wuhan public security and medical staff to the warning. In the days before his death, Lee said in an interview with The New York Times: "If officials disclosed information about the epidemic earlier, I think the situation would be much better." He said: "Should There is more openness and transparency." I think Dr. Li made a major help that cannot be ignored for this outbreak, but it was not recognized in the early stages. Instead, government officials thought he was confusing people and wanted to make things bigger. His sacrifice made me feel very sad and sorry. -

The quarantine days for an international student from China
The picture shows the Chinese herbal medicine I had for nearly a month when I was quarantined in the US. This picture shows my desperation and helplessness as an international student from China, and what I can do to protect me from being infected by the virus. I believe that international students from China in the US during the Coronavirus crisis suffer most. Since the beginning of the 2020, we worried about the safety and health of our family in China; during the March to April, when virus spread rapidly across the US, we were restricted from going back home; and even if we went back home, we still encountered discrimination and misunderstanding of other Chinese people. In the US, we are also the loneliest and most vulnerable groups—we were all afraid of getting out, so we had quarantine at home by ourselves. To prevent us from being infected, we started to have Chinese herbal medicine (as showed in the photo). I drank the medicine for nearly a month because the medicine was the only things I had to make me feel safe and relieved. -

Difficult to get home
First of all, because of the virus, every country is doing their best to try to contain the contagion, and the flights between countries are limited. So first of all, it is very difficult to get a ticket to get home. Secondely, the photo is I wear the protection suit, with goggles and N95 face masks in order to protect myself and others. But it feels really un comfortable, and it takes total over 35 hour from US to China (I have to transfer at Korea). -

Because of the COVID-19, our university makes the lectures online, and then I went back to China. But according to the regulation for everyone's good. Vigilance
During the pandemic I was the one that people hated the most: I traveled between China and the State because of my international student status. I luckily had my chance to go back to China before things went down in the states, meanwhile things were alleviated greatly on the other side. And as I was waiting for the plane in the airport, I saw people wearing not only face masks, but also protective suits and safety googles. Considering that this is before the coming out of face-covering requirement in California, I feel the fear everywhere around me. Yet, I was not surprised to see these protections. When many people said that Covid-19 is a scam and wearing face masks took away human rights, these people showed the world what does real protection mean. -

Empty city
In these months of the virus's rapid expansion, China has taken measures to seal off its cities. In Wuhan, no one is free to enter or leave the city. Residents in Wuhan are also unable to leave their homes. All supplies, as well as food, are delivered by a single person. People were asked to self-segregate as well as social distance. The whole city was like an empty city, no vehicles, no lights, no people. The formerly bustling city becomes a 'dead city' with no breath. At that time, what awaited people was the rising number of confirmed diagnoses and deaths and the sporadic hope they saw as soon as they opened their eyes each day. -

A Long Way to Home
I had never felt how long a journey to home can be, until this time. I took an 15-hour flight from western US to eastern China. I could not eat, drink, or use the lavatory during the whole time of flight to prevent myself from infecting COVID-19. Besides, I had to wear masks and gloves all the time. Those made me feel the time was going much slower than any other time. The only thing I could do was reading on my phone. I read the one of the best scientific fictions in the world, The Three-body Problem. The author says that "The human being had never been defeated because of weakness and ignorance, but arrogance." It is the same thing when we confronting the COVID-19, an unknown crisis in human history. The point is we cannot be arrogance this time. We have to be serious and do hour best to prevent it from spreading. -

An opportunity for e-commerce in China
I found that during the pandemic, all the e-commerce sites or APPs in China have launched their special theme about fighting against the coronavirus. In this special theme, they would display various kinds of products, like masks, liquid soap, hand sanitizer, disposable gloves and so forth. Since Chinese people were required not to go out at that time, some e-commerce APPs also have promotions about toilet papers, about fast noodles and so forth. They were very sensitive and seized the opportunities to develop their businesses. -

COVID 19 EXPERIENCES
Okay, this whole coronavirus got me feeling both anxious and relaxed at the same time. I know it’s contradicting, but the reason I feel this way is because an immature part of me wishes this pandemic to reach something higher so it would give it that movie-style feel to it. Sort of in the way the movie “World War Z” depicted that a virus from China had gotten out of control and went to wipe out most of humanity by turning it into fast, zombie like things that only seeked to find an uninfected human to bite, and move on to the next. But then again, I come to my senses and realize that it’s not what I want; I don’t want the destruction of the world as I know it. And even though I know this pandemic won’t go to those great lengths, I just sort of want my “normal” life back, that is, back in school, back with my friends or whatever. On the other hand, I feel relaxed too, as the pressure of the monotonous school routine is not there anymore, I feel free. -

Reflection From a High School Student
As an Asian American, attacks like these are infuriating and spread only hate and racism. My family and I are scared to go out because we are afraid something like this would happen. In today's society, racial inequality and xenophobia still exist. This pandemic is worsening the tensions that are already occurring. In addition to this, there are many riots and protests that are happening near my neighborhood due to the death of George Floyd. My social media is filled with the Black Lives Matter Movement and many horrific actions that are taking place. As a high school student, I thought I would only have to worry about AP exams, virtual prom, and online schooling. However, there are so many concerning issues and violent events that I can't ignore. Everything feels surreal and absolutely crazy. -

A Kiss Across the Glass
The girl in the photo called Ying Cheng, Five other colleagues from her hospital received an emergency notification from the hospital: the negative pressure ward will be activated at any time! After receiving the notice, she didn't have much time to explain to her family one by one, and she immediately returned to the hospital to prepare to enter the front line "battlefield". Since then, Ying Cheng has stayed in the negative pressure ward every day, guarding the diagnosed patients against a distance. In front of the infection building of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, her boyfriend met across the glass. This is the first time they have met in 11 days. Hate and Assault Against Asians
This was found on a website called talent recap.com, “Hate Crimes and Racist Assaults Against Asians In American Escalates due to Coronavirus”. It introduces the viewers to several events that had happened during the coronavirus and how many asian descents are discriminated for “being the cause of the coronavirus”. During this pandemic I have noticed how so many people are being assaulted from other ignorant people about how they started this virus and that they should be tortured or blamed for the things that has happened. This is important to me because one time when I was in public with my sister to get some groceries, we came with gloves and masks on because we know we have a weak immune system and we also tend to get sick easily so we came protected, but when we went in the meat isle to get steak, a couple was standing there with no gloves on or masks stared at us and walked by saying “Go back to your homeland you chink” while i was speaking in Vietnamese to my mom. I was so angry at that time but I remained calm because we were in public at that time, however it angers me that in events like the one on the website shows how a father and his kids were attacked, in this case stabbed, because they were asians that were seen in public. And it sucks that so many innocent asian people are harmed so much because of others being prejudice based on their ancestry of being an Asian. -

At Least Wear Facemasks
A J-Cast News article on a campaign by Taketomi Island, a small island in southern Japan, to encourage tourists/visitors to at least wear facemasks if they're going to visit the island. This article highlights the difficult position so many places and businesses are in - they need tourists for their economic well-being, but they also need to block the spread of the virus. A dilemma. While many islands are discouraging tourism altogether, Taketomi has apparently decided it's too vital for the economy of the tiny community. -

No matter what: Racism is not okay
This pandemic is hard enough for all of us. As a health care worker, I've been deemed one of the special "frontliners" the ones who still put on pants everyday to go to work and serve. So shouldn't I be happy? Isn't this what I signed up for when I decided to be a pharmacy technician part time during my undergrad? I'm happy to serve my community. I'm happy to be able to still be okay and healthy and make a difference by helping my patients. But I didn't sign up for racism. I didn't sign up for face rashes because my allergies still happen and when I sneeze all that snot and saliva gets caught in my mask, and by the end of the day my nose and lips are bright red. I didn't sign up for microagressions with anything, not even my age. In the pharmacy, I've had customers make inappropriate jabs at me about my age, ask for older looking workers because they don't think I'm experienced enough, but none of that prepared me for microagressions based on my race. Coming back to work during the pandemic was strange. Because I had traveled back to Southern California, and back up to Northern California for school, my boss didn't schedule me for 2 weeks-- weeks I had asked for off due to school events that were now, cancelled. Coming back during the crisis, I noticed little things. Customers sanitizing every thing I touched, standing a bit farther away from me from behind the plexiglass, but stepping closer to speak with other store associates, asking for other workers. This was fine. I just continued to serve with a smile. But today, today was the worst one yet. As I walked back into the store from lunch, two ladies blocked the walkway to get through to the pharmacy. Needing to get by, I walked a little close to them, but used an aisleway to get by. Noticing me walk by, they decided to scream: 6 FEET AWAY. SOCIAL DISTANCING at me, and only me. Not at the non-asian looking company employee clearly a bit too close to them, not at any other passerby's, just me- a Vietnamese girl who just needed to get back to her job. I still had a good 4 hours to go in the shift, and that didn't include crying. Keeping a straight face, I walked past them, and continued on to do my job. I kept a straight face the whole shift, until afterwards, I got into my car and cried. Those words shouldn't have hurt me in that way. I shouldn't have to hide my feelings, but they were there. As I sat in silence, finally steady enough to drive home, those words still haunted me the entire way back, until I got home, got into my room, turned off all the lights and continued to cry for all the hurt I felt from those words. Social distancing is important, but be mindful of the space you are taking up, and who is around you. Racism is never okay, and I hope my reaction to these words and actions prevent you from do anything of the same sort. Just because we're Asian does not mean this pandemic is our fault. We're all in this together, so we need to support each other, not tear each other down. -

A brief memoir written by a trapped Chineses student at ASU
It is the third week after transition of classes started in ASU. My life started to become monotone after the spring break which was 3.17. Dining hall did not allow dine-in anymore. The chairs inside the nearest dining hall—Hassayampa, were all put away and sanitized towels were placed in bowls on tables. The dining hall staffs began to provide us with disposable plastic boxes to fill the meals and they even wore glosses to prevent spreading epidemic. The transitioning of classes announced by ASU was said to maintain for two weeks, but it was extended through the semester at the end of the first week after spring break. My first roommate decided to go back home right after the new policy, and my second and third roommate moved out during the second week, which left me alone in the dorm. My daily routine is: wake up--breakfast--online classes--dining hall--dorm--online classes--dining hall-- dorm--homework or video games. It was not as monotone as weekdays during the weekends, since I could spend more time on leisure instead of studying. In the light of the epidemic, I was discouraged by myself as well as my parents and the local government to do any social contacts. But thanks to the virtual technologies, I use zoom to make video contacts with my friends and Wechat to contact with my parents. They worry about my safety in U.S. because they are mostly back in China where the epidemic is approximately purged; in the contrast, the cases in U.S. are increasing. They fear the public order here are disrupted and urge me to hoard food in case that the dining hall might close or something worse happen. Most importantly, they all ask me to wear mask if I am outdoor. In U.S., I barely see people wearing masks outdoor, which is greatly opposite in China. Here is a fun fact that can explain why CDC does not recommend people wearing masks: Half of the production of masks among the world are in China, which explains why CDC does not recommend wearing masks while purchasing masks from other countries to meet the need of medical staffs. CDC may explain that no empirical results prove wearing masks can prevent the spreading of virus, but if it really can’t, then the epidemic in China will not get better than it used to be with the help of masks. Few people wearing masks in U.S. is my greatest concern, because it cannot efficiently slow down the spreading rate of Covid-19. Based on the status quo of epidemic in U.S., cases will keep growing and need time of months to see the turning point. And even now, the travel level for China is still “4”, which means Chinese are not allowed to enter U.S. Because I bought the flight ticket to China at the end of this semester, I am afraid that I will be declined to reenter U.S. even during August. I truly wish the epidemic around the world will stop in the coming months and the vaccine for Covid-19 can be successfully produced. Stay healthy, wash hands frequently, keep social distances and wear masks if you can. -
