A Picture of New York City in Crisis
A link to an article from Photography Collections Preservation Project about New York City essential delivery person, artist and poet Kurt Boone. As Boone travels through New York City making his deliveries, he photographs the city during the pandemic. The first paragraphs of the article relate the project: "A bustling city once teeming with urbanites on crowded sidewalks and in jam-packed subway cars comes to a grinding halt. Save an eerie silence made more deafening by the occasional ambulance siren, the events of the city beyond our apartment walls are largely left to the imagination. For most, this has been the picture of New York City ever since Governor Andrew Cuomo’s shelter-in-place order effectively shut it down in late March and indefinitely altered daily life for millions. A smaller population of New Yorkers, however, have been uniquely privy to public life in the age of the coronavirus pandemic. This is the case for the many essential employees currently working in New York City including messenger and street photographer Kurt Boone. Every morning at 7:30 A.M., Kurt Boone–a veteran New York City courier of over 20 years–prepares for a full day of making essential deliveries around the five boroughs. After checking the news for the latest coronavirus updates before leaving his New Jersey apartment, Boone arrives at the World Trade Center in Manhattan only to greet a different city each day. In the U.S. epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis, around 1,000 new coronavirus patients are admitted to hospitals daily. More and more quintessential New York establishments shutter their doors, and the gripping effects of this crisis are increasingly felt by all. Worse, there is no clear end in sight. For Boone, these scenes of strife and desolation are “surreal and depressing.” As a longtime documentarian of urban culture, Boone feels a responsibility to show the world how this pandemic is unfolding in New York City. Ontario Electronic Road Signs 3
Photographs taken along the 401, through the Toronto corridor and into Eastern Ontario. Road signs usually used to indicate road closures and promote road safety are used to promote remaining inside. As this route is also that which is taken by many "snow birds" (people who winter in the south and return to Canada in the summer) as they returned by car the signs remind them they are obligated to quarantine for 14 days. Other flashed messages on these signs said as much explicitly. These photographs were taken while driving in a moving van after travelling from London in the southwest off the province to Ottawa in the East after collecting my (Hope Gresser's) belongings which had been previously been left behind when returning home from university due to threads and rumours of a full lock-down which would have stranded me there after my lease was up. -

Google Searches for Banana Bread - on the news
This is a screenshot of the Alan Kohler's finance report on the 7 o'clock news in Tasmania, Australia. Kohler ended a characteristically dire covid19 financial report with this graph showing a spike in Google searches for banana bread in Australia. Firstly, this gives an insight into everyday life for Australians cooped up at home and trying to stay entertained and feel productive. Since making banana bread is usually a way to use up overripe spotty brown bananas, it also speaks to the lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in households at the moment with everyone minimising their grocery trips. Secondly, it's a nice visual of the phenomenon of "lockdown trends" - like zoom parties, sourdough and seedlings, the more that people posted their freshly baked banana bread on social media, the more others felt inspired to do the same. I also think this item reflects the urge of media producers to find light in the darkness and remind viewers of the novelties of lockdown life. Finally, I think this screenshot shows the surrealism of life in Covid19, a time when Google searches for banana bread are discussed alongside plummeting stocks in a finance report on the evening news and with our newly developed Covid19 intuition this strangeness has become a normality. #HUM403 -

Newport Beach
My roommate and I stayed at home for half month. We felt kind of sad and depressed. We heard the Newport beach opens. We spent half hour to find a parking space, because there were lots of people. On the beach, lots of people were playing and having fun. We were surprised the number of people on the beach, because that was a Monday. On the day after we went to the beach, we heard the local government closed the Newport beach again, because there were too many people on the beach. -

Going to work at Amazon during Covid-19
This photograph was taken at an Amazon Warehouse facility in Concord, North Carolina. In this image you are seeing all employees waiting in line 6 feet apart as they are scanned by a thermo type scanner measuring your body temperature to make sure you do not have a fever. If you have a fever an alarm is set to go off. Once you have demonstrated you do not have a fever then you are given a mask so that you can work. April 28th, 2020 9:00 EST
