The Rippling Effects of COVID-19
COVID-19 came as a shock to everyone. No one could have predicted the rippling effects it has had in everyone's lives. This pandemic impacts all kinds of people- young, old, single, married, rich, and poor. It is the common thread among all of us. It is what binds us together during this difficult time. This time will never be forgotten. It will be written in textbooks and taught to future generations. Many families are going through a hard time. Who knew a virus could infiltrate people’s lives like this and flip them upside down? No one saw this coming. Many families are struggling financially including mine. We weren’t prepared for this. We thought it will all blow over soon enough. Unfortunately, we were wrong. First, my school closed. Then, my job place closed. Then, my gym closed. It seemed as if the whole world was shutting down right before my eyes, slowly stripping the things I love the most. The thought of being trapped in the house, all day, every day, for who knows how long, gave me anxiety. Slowly, life began to become very boring. Waking up knowing that you’re trapped in the house. Curfews were put up in my city. It’s like we were little kids and the Government was our parents trying to protect us from the monster- COVID 19. I suddenly had so much free time on my hands and didn’t know what to do with it. I decided to pick up some new hobbies. I tried everything. From painting to reading. It was a crazy time for all of us. When we were finally allowed out, I was so happy. Happy that everything will go back to normal, happy that I could get my old life back, happy that I could leave my house again. However, it wasn’t what I expected it to be. We had to wear masks, gloves, and maintain six feet apart between people. I remember the first time I went out in months. Everyone had covered faces and only eyes of sadness and fear were able to be seen. We all looked the same, yet on the inside we were different, each of us experiencing the impacts of the pandemic in a different way. I was shocked. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that a virus, something that is not visible to the naked eye, has turned our lives upside down and forced us to deal with the consequences. As of now, September 2020, life is somewhat what it used to be, but it will never return back to the way we’ve known. The fact that this has become our new reality, is kind of scary. But we are not out of the clear yet, there’s still so much work to do. We have to cooperate with all the guidelines and stick together. Especially during these difficult times, together we are stronger. This is all my own interpretation of the times we live in now and how it has impacted me and changed our lives forever. -

COVID-19 story
Around the date that this image was taken was when the initial wave of COVID-19 began. I chose this image to best reflect my experience with COVID-19 because this was also around the time with the George Floyd shootings. As such, this document was handy for various reasons. For one, being an African-American male was a very unique experience at the time, since Floyd’s shooting brought about both people who supported either the BLM movement or was against it. The connection with COVID-19 was that during that point in time during the Floyd shooting, COVID-19 was not the main headline. However, as a consequence to the protests and COVID, curfews were put in place in various states nationwide. This image helped protect me from any unnecessary confrontation that could occur after curfew hours. During a time where there was already enough tension between African-Americans and law enforcement, I did not want to put myself in a situation where I could be compromised. In addition, this image will go down in history for future generations to see of the overall impact that COVID-19 had globally. This pandemic made drastic changes to the way of life in which we lived – from curfews to furloughing employees, to food and toilet paper shortages. This image reminds me of my experience with COVID-19. Around the date that this image was taken was when the initial wave of COVID-19 began. Finding Me.
I know people have mostly negative stories that correlate to Covid-19 but I am choosing to write about one of the positive things that happened to me during these harsh times. Before Covid-19 I never really had time for myself, it was always wake up, go to work and then go to school, then go home, then homework, shower and finally sleep (eating multiple times throughout the day). But I never really had time to do anything I liked. Back then when someone asked what my hobbies were, I had none. But Covid-19 was low-key a blessing in disguise for me, with all this free time with work and school being closed, I found myself. I started watching tv, picking up new hobbies and finding things that I loved but never really had time for. And now of course that everything is opened again, I gained some time management skills and am able to manage everything that I love in life. -

Senior Sadness
When the pandemic abruptly flipped our world upside down, I did not know how to react. Within a matter of just a couple days, I felt as if everything that I had worked towards was being stripped away from me. I was a senior in high school during the 2019-2020 year. March 12, 2020 will go down as one of the worst days in my life. That is the day I found out bad news after bad news. I first found out that all the hard work my basketball team and I had put in was coming to an end. We had just won our PA state quarter final game the night before. We had hopes of making it back to the state championship. That was a hard pill to swallow. No more memories, no more practices, no more laughs and cries with my teammates and coaches. Later that day, it was then announced that school was strictly online for the remaining of the year. I can remember the pit in my stomach when I heard that news. In life, we take so many things for granted- my high school experience being one of them for me. As a senior, you work so hard in the classroom, build so many great bonds with your friends and teachers, and that was all just taken from us. In this day in age, keeping engaged in friendships and relationships is very easy with technology. But this felt different, this WAS different. No more senior activities. No prom. No end of the basketball season. No graduation. No more giggles with your friends in the hallway, at lunch, in the classroom. There was no proper goodbye. That is what hit me the hardest. Everyone is impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic in every way possible- some more than others. It took me a while to accept my new normal, and to accept the fact that it is out of my control. I am not the only senior who felt like what was supposed to be the best year of their life, turned out to be the worst year of their life. I’ve tremendously grown from the situation our world is in, and I know so many others have, too. -

Working at Weggies
I started working at my job at Wegmans in January 2020. As a cashier, pandemic or not, you encounter many people. When the pandemic hit, everything changed so fast and so drastically. There were so many rules about employees washing hands frequently to mandatory masks to social distancing in line. They even limited how many people were in the store at a time. My job did the best they could given the circumstances, but it was still scary going to work. This virus does not make it easy to identify who has it and who does not. Whenever you go out, please where a mask and stand back. You don’t know how many people the employees see daily. -

What item summed up my COVID experience
I decided to choose this item because in the lockdown stage of quarantine, besides working out there was not much else to do. I read an interesting book during that time as well but my TV is definitely what I got most of my entertainment from for a while. -

How I Got Through COVID-19
The way my basement helped me through the Coronavirus pandemic is that it served as an escape for me. My family and I made sort of a makeshift gym in my basement and here I was able to just zone out and escape all of the stress and worries COVID brought through working out. -

MIRA’s agenda for an inclusive response to COVID-19
The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition collected a series of helpful documents for immigrants and refugees in Massachusetts about the COVID-19 pandemic. At the start, they created an agenda on how the federal and local governemnts should react to the pandemic in relation to immigrant communities. Part of the agenda calls on Trump to release detainees that cannot be kept safe, but as the news as shown, ICE continues to detain immigrants and some have died in detention centers of the virus. -

Old bear!
All the playgrounds were shut and it was school holidays. The kiddies had only bikes and walks as nothing was open at all during our period of lockdown. A young mother I vaguely knew was walking past one day and I said I was meaning to drag some bears out of the shed and she was so pleased as she was finding it hard to keep her 6 year old entertained. For the next 4 weeks they walked past every day and she sent me a message saying her young daughter was making up stories about Old Bear. In a very small way, Old Bear helped her and the other kiddies who would help out when they saw Old Bear. I felt in a small way we were helping to brighten someone's day. -

About Sar Cov-2
Before the pandemic had morphed into its current situation, Sarah Munro, a student at Columbia's School of Public Health, created an overview that was shared with friends and family members. It was meant to provide a resource to answer basic questions such as: how long will this last, should I wear a mask, etc. Although she is not a doctor, she is studying epidemiology and other related fields concerning diseases. Her belief was that some information is better than no information. Sarah Munro is the original author, Joey Dorion is publishing per her request Early March, exact date unknown -

Official sign on public transport in Paris, France
This official sign, reminding of the importance of good hygiene, appears on all public transport in Paris. This one - on a number 76 bus - has been doctored with the advice to take used handkerchiefs to the police station. It may represented a feeling that official advice is exaggerated, or simply anti-police sentiment.
