My Life in China During the Coronavirus
Ten weeks ago, I was in Beijing. I did not have to wear a mask, I did not have to get my temperature checked. I was with a close friend of mine. While they were worried about this virus, I shrugged it off. "We have a new virus every year," I said--"This will be no big deal, I'm not worried." I still feel terrible about that conversation exchange. A few weeks later, I was canceling my holiday to South Korea. A couple weeks after that, China had reached 40,000+ cases. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. I was stuck inside. I slipped into what felt like an endless ocean of the blues. I felt sad, worried, I was contacting those most important to me almost every chance I got. Now, after 10 weeks, China is slowly starting to return to normal. This picture, taken by Joe Larrea, shows me out and about for the first time since the pandemic began. We have been teaching online for 7 weeks now, with uncertainty on when we'll go back. However, it's nice to see that the city is finally starting to come back to life, even if it is still not as booming as it usually is. We still cannot leave without masks, or enter anywhere without temperature checks. But the country is slowly starting to open up again. What's considered normal is starting to return, albeit at a slow rate. Now, the rest of the world is reaching the problems that China experienced a few weeks ago. Hopefully, the rest of the globe can combat this as well, and one day it'll all seem like a bad dream. -

Our Last Flight Departing
I work as a passenger service agent for a ground contractor on behalf of Air Canada at BWI airport. This is a picture of our last flight departing before Air Canada suspended all flights to BWI until May 1, 2020; time will tell if that date will actually be when flights resume. We usually have 4 flights a day, 3x daily to Toronto and 1x daily to Montreal year round, plus a second daily flight to Montreal in the summer, but they had to be suspended in large part because of the US government restricting all flights from Canada to arrive at one of 13 airports to control the spread of the virus between the two nations. BWI was not included in the list, so flights had to be suspended before the end of March. I suspect the flights were suspended before the 31st due to the collapse in passenger traffic caused by the virus most likely caused our flights to no longer be viable; our flights that usually flew out nearly full were suddenly flying almost empty. We found out two days prior, on Friday, that this flight would be our last and afterwards we’d all be laid off. My supervisor came in on Friday thinking it was a normal day only to find out it was her last day, and the rest of us would be unemployed within the next two days. -

Coronavirus, Mikveh, and Taharat Hamishpacha
My partner shared an email with me from the Rabbi of a synagogue we're affiliated with, which addressed questions he'd received from congregants about how to deal with family purity laws under the current physical distancing restrictions. The email recommended reviewing the advice on this website, which provides guidelines for Jewish women performing ritual immersion at a mikveh (ritual bath) for the purposes of family purity, and for mikveh attendants, during the coronavirus outbreak. The advice was developed by Jewish women who are revered as experts in this aspect of religious law. -

First voice-over power point for first day of now online US history of medicine class.
First PowerPoint of 55 min recorded lecture. First time I’ve ever added voice over to PowerPoint images I usually show in class. Usually I see my students, I ask them questions and interact with them. I use the blackboard to underline points as well. They break into groups to discuss primary sources. It took 10 hours today, Sunday, to learn this new skill and translate my lecture into a new format: new images, voice recorded for each one. Most poignant is the first one in which I am saying hello, talking about the weird situation we are all in, telling them that i miss them, and that they should not worry. The goal is for them to learn as best they can under weird conditions but this class should not add to their stress. They need to take care of their own health and their families. The image represents what every professor in the country was asked to do over spring break—in the flurry of stress, shopping for possible 2-week quarantine, thinking about Home-schooling and absorbing conflicting information. And an election in Illinois and other states. We do as best we can because we care about our students. But the dozens of messages from the administration are unhelpful. This icommand from above for instantaneous online education represents hard work. We will all do the best we can. -
