Messages for a Quiet Highway
This is a photo taken on the highway during what is normally rush hour. Driving down a nearly empty highway, we passed lit up signs flashing information like "Avoid Non-Essential Travel" and reminders to visit the NJ website for more information on COVID-19. It was immensely eerie. -

A Dark Green Mill In Daylight
The historic Green Mill Cocktail Lounge in Uptown, Chicago, has long been open from 12PM to 4AM 365 days a year: the marquee lights blaze in the daylight and twinkle invitingly once the sun goes down, and you can hear the faint blares of trumpets and saxophones. This bar has long been a haven from modern life for busybodies and music-lovers alike, where they can relax in the relic of the jazz age, myself included. For three years now, I have been going to the Green Mill every Tuesday after my bartending shift. However, Covid-19 has forced the bar to close its doors and to turn off its lights. Uptown feels lost without its guiding beacon, and its presence is one of the few aspects of regular life that I genuinely miss. #DePaulHST391 -

Email from an Undergraduate University Student to Professor
I live in a house isolated from family and have many things I feel I need to do in order to care for myself and my family properly who live across town. I am still going to work where I potentially expose myself. The process of meticulously caring for myself before, during and after work has taken a lot of time and energy, but I am meticulously attempting to care for my health in every moment. Please bear with me as I try to catch up with the assigned work you have given in the next few days (before Friday), which I find very interesting and well written, but also detailed and requiring thorough reading. If you feel that I am too far behind, or have failed at attendance, please advise and I will try to drop the class by the due date. Many thanks and stay safe. -

Free Beans
I didn't think to take a picture at the time, but while out for a walk I saw a paper shopping bag at the end of a driveway. It had "free beans" written in black marker on the side, and lo and behold the grocery bag was full of lots of bags of beans! It's a great thing to do, and I didn't need anything so I walked on without thinking too much about what it all meant. I'm in San Jose, CA which is in one of the first counties to order a Shelter in Place. Everyday it feels like reported cases are skyrocketing, and then they go up further. I was walking around a poorer neighborhood. Stores are so close to empty of food (and puzzles) and many people don't have cars to load up and panic buy for long stretches. Of course, I can't know what the exact experience of the gift giver was. But I know that they put the community above their own needs, and they didn't even need to be thanked for it. Could have kept the beans for themselves, for sure. They trusted that those who would take the beans would need the food more than they did, and that the rest of us wouldn't be greedy. After all, it's hard to be greedy when you are surrounded by such selfless people. -

Living Alone
I work in a hospital, and I am scared of bringing COVID home to my husband. I am sleeping in the bedroom while he sleeps on the couch. I am only using the basement entrance to our apartment. We are sharing the bathroom and bleaching it a lot. I am not entering the rest of our living space. I can’t get into the kitchen or living room. We are not coming any closer than 6 feet from each other. I miss him. -

New park rules appeared today
We are going for a walk every day for exercise, noting as the days go by new signs and information about social distancing. These signs were not there yesterday, and the teenagers playing basketball at the hoop and the kids playing on the playground have now disappeared. Just groups of two, or families with a few more, walking slightly furtively past one another. And many more bicyclists whizzing past on the shared paths — have already seen a bingle or two. -
