Texas Governor, Attorney General issue guidance for religious services during COVID-19 pandemic
Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton issued guidance for houses of worship and religious services. In the state of Texas, churches and other houses of worship are classified as essential services. The guidance document states that institutions can provide these essential services under certain conditions. The governor is directing religious activities to be practiced at home or through audio or video services. If they cannot conduct activities remotely, houses of worship should follow White House and CDC guidelines for social distancing, personal hygiene, and sanitizing public surfaces. -

Revisiting the Parking Lot Where I Learned How to Drive
I currently live in Chicago with my mother, stepfather, and my four little siblings. Because of the pandemic, all playgrounds are closed and fenced off with biohazard tape (which, I find amusing). Lots of large parks are open, but these days they tend to get oddly crowded when it's nice outside. On this beautiful afternoon, we decided to take the kids to ride their bikes in the large and unused parking lot of the Basic Wire & Cable Company, a very out of the way spot where I learned how to ride a bike and drive a car. #DePaulHST391 -

Column: COVID-19 inspires a Catholic church to offer drive-thru confessions
The article talks about how due to the effects of COVID-19 churches have had to close their doors to the public. With doing so it added a lot of limitations on what people can do as part of their faith. Thearticle follows a church in San Diego, California where confessions were made available in a "alternative" form. The Church was having confessions in the form of a drive-through, this would allow people to be cleansed from their sins, and still be considered "holy" by the time easter came around. -

Legacy Program Emergency Relief Fund, Preservation Hall, New Orleans, LA
The COVID-19 virus has necessitated the closure of Preservation Hall and all music venues in New Orleans for the foreseeable future. Due to these cancellations, our musical collective faces an unprecedented challenge without work, with the growing health risk in New Orleans and indefinite economic uncertainties for all musicians and those tied to the tourism and entertainment industries. To address these challenges, the Preservation Hall Foundation has launched the Legacy Program Emergency Relief Fund to assist our musical collective affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Legacy Program Emergency Fund assists the 61 musicians to be used towards medical expenses, lodging, food, and other vital living expenses due to illness or loss of work. While we hope the health risk is short term, the economic impact will have lasting repercussions. Today, we are marshaling all of our resources towards caring for our musical collective and helping them weather this crisis. It's vital that we get resources into their hands immediately in order to meet their critical needs. The mission of the Preservation Hall Foundation is to protect, preserve and perpetuate New Orleans music. None of that would be possible without our cherished collective of musicians who play, teach, create, compose, entertain and enrich our lives on a daily basis. Jazz musicians are experts at improvising. We'll get through this with your help. Please join us in helping our musical collective and ensuring the protection of our vital culture in New Orleans. -

Taking Back the Power through 3D Modelling
This was a project I made while dealing with the stress of the coronavirus affecting my family and friends in Queens. I drew up, 3D modeled, and rendered a model of the coronavirus with spherical polygons shaped using python and math. The model was made with repeating spheres distorted by different variables. Using these variables, I can also duplicate the computerized version of the virus indefinitely. Living just a walk away from the current epicenter of COVID-19, Elmhurst, Queens, every day of life now is profoundly shaped by this disease, with family members currently hospitalized and suffering from this pandemic. This piece is me taking the power back by making the virus, manipulating it, and containing it within my own virtual creation. -

The Two Seniors
The Two Seniors: one in college, one in high school. The Class of 2020. I was the first to be told my Commencement was cancelled. A couple days later, the other senior's Graduation was cancelled along with her Grad Nite and Senior Activities. As a first generation student, not receiving that validation of finishing secondary education and having loved ones there to celebrate that is disappointing. The other senior deserves to celebrate that milestone of completing high school and walk the stage. At the end of the day, these two seniors are lucky to self-isolate in a safe place and make sure the people with us are safe and healthy during this time. -

Sewing elastic on n95s
One of our local hospital groups in Horry County, South Carolina, Tidelands Health, had a stock of n95 respirators from a previous public health crisis. However, the elastic securing bands had degraded and become brittle and cant be stretched. They solicited local volunteers to sew on new elastic so the masks can be used. The hospital had a contactless drive up checkin and pick up system. They provided the masks and elastic, so I spent the afternoon repairing 35 small n95 respirator masks. I have a box of large to finish tomorrow before I return them. It is a small thing, but it really helped me feel like I was doing something tangible and helpful for my community. -

Feelings Of Being Quarantined
Being self isolated is pretty hard for me, but somehow I'm a natural at being self isolated. All I do now is just hangout in my own room. I do all of my classes through Zoom and I also do homework on my laptop as well. I also solve Rubik's cubes and play video games as well in my spare time. I'm really trying my best to avoid going outside until this virus dies out and I'm being very cautious on what I'm doing so I don't end up getting the virus. -

Do I become homeless or do I risk my family's lives?
I have been forced into a situation of whether to stay at my Campus and risk becoming homeless by the May 10th mandatory move-out date or go back to my home city of San Francisco and put my entire family at risk of contamination due to their immuno-compromised nature. This situation is like Russian Roulette with a Glock-17. While I made my decision it makes me extremely worried regardless of what happens next. Nothing has felt so gut wrenching, and nothing has felt so terrifying than this decision. -

Late-Night Talks
Ever since the Coronavirus has taken over the country, everyone has been on lockdown in their homes. These past few weeks have turned into a swarm of conference calls, virtual happy hours, and late-night video chats. It has made me miss my friends even more than I thought I would. Don’t get me wrong, it has made me thankful for my family as well. It is hard to not be able to see my friends and peers every day, like what I am used to. One of my friends who lives in Virginia has been feeling a little bit lonely too, so we have been talking every night for a couple nights in a row. We talk about everything under the sun. We talk about religion, different jobs, and what the world will be like after this pandemic is over. We also share our favorite memories from school, reminisce on old memories from previous years, and we talk about whatever is on our mind. Even though we are not together in person, it feels like we are hanging out like we normally would. Talking online is going to be the new normal for teenagers like me, who cannot go out and see friends. Having people to talk to online makes me feel like I am not alone in this crazy world we are living in right now. Everyone else is dealing with the same thing, and we are all in this together. -
