April 6th - April 12th
The week of April 6th, 2020 – April 12th, 2020 marked over 21 days of quarantine for myself. Here in Conway, South Carolina, it feels as though life has taken a hit, but not to the extension that you see in places such as California or New York. Whether it is people have been lucky here or just not enough testing to actually confirm the correct number is anybody’s guess. You can still go into a store such as Wal-Mart and find an overwhelming amount of people at any given time. Even though Governor McMaster has put on a stay at home order for all nonessential workers, it just doesn’t feel like daily life has slowed down for many. For myself, the only positive that has come from all of this are the low gas prices, as low as $1.19 in some places! One of the biggest issues that I have seen is the mental aspect of the country. The panic, the worry, the fear. Granted it is unprecedented times, but instead of calm and trying to find positive in this, all over the TV and media is negativity. In my hometown of Adams, Massachusetts, this virus is destroying them, but yet when I talk to family members, the lack of action is mind – blowing to me. My mother works for a dentist office who continues to stay open, even after her boss recently came back from a cruise. Is it ignorance or greed? I have struggled with those two topics of this whole situation. It is clear now that the measures taken at the beginning of the outbreak were not enough. Now the government handing out money to people to try and keep them afloat is their way of trying to curb public opinion. What better way to prevent an outcry of the public than to give them free money to keep their opinions to themselves? For me in this situation, the real fear in this, is my mind. As someone who has struggled the majority of my life with addiction and alcoholism, it is a crippling time in the sober community. On April 15th, it will mark my one year anniversary of being sober. These last few weeks seem to have tested me more than ever. With the social gatherings limit, that means all of the meetings I was attending every week are no longer an option. Being laid off and not being able to go anywhere, you have restless legs and a restless mind. This past week I have done hours of yard work and home maintenance just to keep my mind busy and hopefully exhaust me to the point where I just go to sleep. I am one of the lucky ones, I guess. In the last ten days, I have had to watch three friends in sobriety, go back out, and lose their lives to the disease. I know the longer that this pandemic goes on, the more friends I will have to say goodbye to and you just pray that you stay afloat. There has been good in this though, there are pop up groups that have created online meetings where you can facetime in and get to have meetings with people from all over the world. I’m not sure what this next week holds in store, but just like everyday I pray we see the light at the end of the tunnel. P.S. I miss sports desperately (this was supposed to be the Master’s tournament this weekend!). -

This Special Period
2020 is a special year. At the beginning of this year, a new coronavirus appeared in China. The virus quickly spread throughout China. At first, we thought it would be controlled soon, but we did not expect this to happen. As the time for the start of the school approached, the school also issued postponement of the start of school, and could not go out. We just took long classees at the computer. Although it is similar to the class at the school, but I still prefer to go back to class on campus so that I can play with my friends better. I hope this epidemic can pass quickly, come on! -

Moving Out
About a week ago, my folks and I had to make a mad dash to my college resident hall to salvage all of the stuff in my room. My dad made extra sure to let me know how it important it was that we got the toilet paper from my room. The whole experience was really bizarre. For starters, there was actually parking spots in the parking lot, something the school is usually pretty lacking in. In addition, the place was practically dead. There were some other students coming to get their belongings as well, but it was pretty much just me and my dad walking up and down the hallway. Considering it was my first year at college, it was a little depressing moving out so unceremoniously. Everything had to be quick and orderly. No time for goodbyes or anything like that. I almost feel like I'm missing out on the college experience a bit. -

The Great Toilet Paper Crisis
Both of my parents drive for a limousine company. This week, one of them was to drive an old woman to do chores and grocery shopping. All she needed from the store was toilet paper and ground beef. She was not able to find any in any of the stores they had tried. We could not let her go without any, so we gave her some from home. Why are people purchasing so much stuff at once? It's like they had decided to start stockpiling as much as they could get there hands on. -

Back to old times
Since we've been in quarantine, my family and I have been spending a lot of time together. Every day feels like the days are getting longer and we run out of things to do. A couple things that we have been doing are playing old games that we haven't in years. We pulled out the old Wii and have been playing games like Mario cart and Wii sports. When that gets boring we play card games and teach each other ones we don't know. Games have been a big part of quarantine life so far. It's given me more time to spend with my family because with our busy schedules, that gets cut down sometimes. -

The Struggle in Rural Communities
The COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly scary. We are currently faced with a time in which people are fighting for their lives, we can’t leave our homes, businesses are closed, and our lives have been completely uprooted. There is no doubt that this situation has affected every single person’s day to day life. However, from my personal experience I think that different communities are affected in different ways or perhaps hit slightly harder. Although everyone’s top priority at this time should be safety, I also think it is important to address the strain this pandemic is putting on communities like my own. The first week of March I drove 600 miles from South Carolina to Pennsylvania to go home and visit my family for spring break. Little did I know that I would end up being in Pennsylvania for the foreseeable future. My hometown is the epitome of a rural community. If you are not one of the few small business owners, a farmer, working for a natural gas company, or a factory worker in the next town over then you most likely live in poverty. Therefore, my community was already economically struggling before this pandemic hit. Once it did hit, the small businesses deemed nonessential were shut down, hours of operation for essential businesses have been cut back, and those who were already wondering how they were going to pay their bills now have absolutely no idea how they are going to survive heading into the future. -

Meme from Wally World
This is a meme making a point that masks and mask material are flying off the shelves and everyone is wearing them everywhere they go, as recommended by the CDC. The added context is that a few weeks ago everyone was giving the "its just a flu" mantra. -

Beijing Xiaotangshan medical team members warmly bid farewell to 3-year-old guests
The little girl was named Xixi, and she returned from the UK with her family not long ago. After screening, her family members were successively diagnosed as COVID-19. To be isolated, only Xixi's nucleic acid test was negative. After that, she became the first guest of Xiaotangshan Hospital. After 14 days of isolation, Xixi can finally go home. Before she was discharged from the hospital, the nurses gave her a lot of snacks. -

People Swarm Toliet Paper at Local Sam's Club
I walked to the back of the store where they keep the toilet paper and saw that the worker was bringing out toilet paper on a pallet. I looked around to see that people were literally swarming this man. As soon as he let down the pallet and walked away they crowded the pallet and starting grabbing. It was such a crazy sight to see. I had to take a picture. This just shows that we value toilet paper. -
